BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes with aggressive biting behavior are important disease vectors threatening public health. Armigeres subalbatus, as an emerging arbovirus and filarial disease vector, exhibits aggressive host-seeking behavior and unique breeding preference for contaminated water. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these biological characteristics remain poorly understood. This study aimed to generate a high-quality genome assembly and characterize the genetic basis of vector competence and environmental adaptation in Ar. subalbatus.
METHODS: We sequenced and assembled the Ar. su

Mosquito feeding behavior determines the degree of vector-host contact and may have a serious impact on the risk of pathogen transmission, including that of the West Nile virus (WNV). To measure the role of Culex mosquitoes as WNV vectors, host-seeking females were collected using animal-baited traps containing live birds (quail) or mammals (rabbits) and CO2-baited Center for Disease Control and Prevention traps placed in several wetland areas in the Czech Republic. Culex pipiens (L.) and Culex modestus (F.) were the most frequently collected species. Although Cx. modestus did not distinguish

The ability to detect carbon dioxide and water vapor is essential for insect survival. Insects possess specialized receptors and anatomical structures that confer remarkable sensitivity to these environmental factors. As both CO2 and humidity are prominent greenhouse gases, understanding how insects sense and respond to these variables is crucial given global fluctuations in climate. This Review consolidates current insights into the molecular and neural mechanisms underlying CO2 and humidity detection in insects, with a focus on their roles in respiration, water balance and osmoregulation. Over 700 million people are at risk of contracting schistosomiasis due to regular exposure to freshwater sources where infected snails, the obligate intermediate hosts of schistosomes, are endemic. Although mass drug administration of praziquantel effectively controls the disease in most regions, achieving elimination will require reducing populations of infected snails that shed the human-infective larval stage. Considerable research effort has focused on parasite development and immunological responses after snail penetration, but comparatively little is known about the molecular and behavio

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), hereafter referred to as self-injury, is common among adolescents and is associated with elevated risk for suicide attempts and other adverse mental health outcomes. Because most adolescents who self-injure do not receive formal treatment, accessible alternatives are needed. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) may offer an accessible and scalable means of support. While previous research has examined DMHIs for youth, less is known about how adolescents who engage in self-injury understand their experiences and use digital technologies, includ

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are globally distributed vectors of viruses that impact the health of hundreds of millions of people annually. Mating and blood feeding represent fundamental aspects of mosquito life history that carry important implications for vectorial capacity and for control strategies. Females transmit pathogens to vertebrate hosts and obtain essential nutrients for eggs during blood feeding. Further, because host-seeking Ae. aegypti females mate with males swarming near hosts, biological crosstalk between these behaviors could be important. Although mating influences

Each year, hundreds of millions of people are sickened by diseases that are transmitted through mosquito bites, including dengue, Zika, and malaria. Mosquito biting does not occur uniformly throughout the day and peak biting times follow species-specific patterns. While host-associated cues, like carbon dioxide (CO2), behaviorally activate human-biting mosquitoes to search for a host, the mechanisms that regulate these responses throughout the day remain poorly understood. Here, we introduce an automated behavioral tracking system to investigate time-of-day variation of CO2 responsiveness in A

BACKGROUND: The transmission patterns of dengue (DENV) and yellow fever (YFV) viruses, especially in urban settings, are influenced by Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquito abundance and behavior. Despite recurrent dengue outbreaks on the Kenyan coast, these parameters remain poorly defined in this and other areas of contrasting dengue endemicity in Kenya. In assessing the transmission risk of DENV/YFV in three Kenyan cities, we determined adult abundance and resting habits of potential Aedes (Stegomyia) vectors in Kilifi (dengue-outbreak prone), and Nairobi and Kisumu (no dengue outbreaks reported). To evaluate whether the presence of clear incandescent light was attractive or refractive to host-seeking mosquitoes in northern Colorado, a Bayesian hierarchical model was created to measure differences in trap effectiveness based on presence or absence of phototactic cues. A total of eight CDC miniature light traps (with and without light) were set weekly across four locations in northern Colorado between Weeks 23 and 32 of year 2020. Culex mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) accounted for 81% of all collections in this study with two vectors of West Nile virus being represented. The probability

Early identification of increasing mosquito activity is critical to effective mosquito control, particularly when increasing host-seeking behavior may be associated with increased risk of mosquito-borne disease. In this paper, we analyzed the temporal abundance pattern of the West Nile Virus vector, Culex tarsalis, in Fort Collins, CO, using an autoregressive integrated moving average model. We determined that an autoregressive model order 5 with lagged minimum temperatures was best at describing the seasonal abundance of Cx. tarsalis. We then tested the effect of using both temporal and spati

This study determined the prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the home environment of 37 confirmed cases of scabies and in five nursing homes with scabietic patients. Dust samples from 44% of infested patients' homes contained scabies mites. Live mites at the time the dust samples were analyzed were present in 64% of these homes. Live mites were recovered most often from bedroom floors or overstuffed chairs and couches. The density of live and dead mites ranged from 1 to 5 mites/0.1 gm of dust or 1 to 9 mites/m2 of surface area sampled. The presence of mites in fomites coupled with survival and

The proven ability of vector mosquitoes to adapt to various strategies developed to control them has enabled mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis to remain entrenched as public health threats all over the world. Rather than continuing to seek a miracle cure for all mosquito vector problems among the ranks of single mode-of-action chemical pesticides, today's developers of vector control strategies are increasingly turning to more integrated, varied techniques, relying on pheromones and other semiochemicals to effect vector control through behavioral manipul

Environmental contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial pollutants exert profound effects on the biology, behavior, and ecology of disease vectors, especially Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. These effects complicate control strategies and enhance the risk of insecticide resistance, thereby influencing the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on how pollutants alter vector development, survival, reproduction, and host-seeking behaviors, often in synergy with insecticide exposure. Notably, sublethal contaminant level

BACKGROUND: Triatoma infestans is the main vector of Chagas disease in the Americas, currently transmitting it in Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Many T. infestans populations present insecticide resistance, reducing the efficiency of control campaigns. Alternative vector control methods are needed, and molecular targets mediating fundamental physiological processes can be a promising option to manipulate kissing bug behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to characterize the main sensory targets, as well as to determine whether they are modulated by physiological factors. In order to identify

Individuals with gambling disorder (GD) experience a host of negative psychosocial and physical health outcomes, yet few seek treatment. Of particular concern are individuals with co-occurring mental and behavioral health disorders, a group at higher risk for GD in the state of Ohio. To better serve this population, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services developed a group-based GD treatment manual for adults with co-occurring disorders. Over the course of 5 years, 353 individuals engaged in at least some of the manual's 12 weekly modules, and more than one-third (n = 122)

The oft-neglected human-parasitic threadworm, Strongyloides stercoralis, infects roughly eight percent of the global population, placing disproportionate medical and economic burden upon marginalized communities. While current chemotherapies treat strongyloidiasis, disease recrudescence and the looming threat of anthelminthic resistance necessitate novel strategies for nematode control. Throughout its life cycle, S. stercoralis relies upon sensory cues to aid in environmental navigation and coordinate developmental progression. Odorants, tastants, gases, and temperature have been shown to shap

The pistachio-seed wasp, Eurytoma plotnikovi Nikol'skaya, is a major pest of the biomass energy tree Pistacia chinensis. Understanding its sensory system is vital for uncovering host location mechanisms, but information on its olfactory system is limited. This study investigated the morphology of sensilla on the bodies of female and male E. plotnikovi. We identified seven types of sensilla on their antennae: sensilla trichodea I (ST I), sensilla trichodea II (ST II), sensilla trichodea III (ST III), sensilla chaetica (SC), sensilla placodea, multiporous grooved peg sensilla, and finger-like se
