Lagged and Nonlinear Effects of Temperature Extremes on Mortality in US Federal Prisons: A Case-Crossover Study, 2009-2021.

BACKGROUND: Temperature extremes are becoming more common due to climate change. Due to infrastructural issues and the demographic characteristics of the incarcerated population, incarcerated people are at high risk of poor health outcomes during extreme temperature events. However, limited empirical evidence exists, with no prior studies on US federal prisons. Our goal was to estimate associations between ambient temperature and all-cause mortality in federal prisons. METHODS: Data on mortality in federal prisons from 2009 to 2021 were linked with daily mean temperature data. We employed a c

Thermoregulatory response of black or red lactating Holstein cows in the hot and cold season in southern Brazil.

Dairy cows in pasture-based systems are more susceptible to heat stress. Holstein cows have the black or red phenotypes, the latter having lower absorbance of solar radiation. Therefore, the study's objective was to evaluate whether cows with red (R) coats are more resistant than black (B) cows to hot weather in a subtropical climate. R and B lactating Holstein cows were evaluated during the cold and hot seasons for internal and surface temperature and sweating rate. In the cold season, body temperature (n = 9/group) did not differ between groups, but the average superficial temperature (n = 1

Prevention of hot tap water burns--a comparative study of three types of automatic mixing valve.

To prevent fatal outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, particularly in hospitals and other health-care premises, building services engineers are recommended to store and operate hot water systems at a temperature of 60 degrees C. However, water at this temperature can cause serious scalding. It is therefore advised that mixing valves be installed in the hot water supply pipework to provide hot water at safe temperatures for washing and bathing. Electricity Association Technology Ltd (EATL) investigated the performance of three makes of automatic mixing valve. Tests showed that with constant supp

Hot water flushing for immiscible displacement of a viscous NAPL.

Thermal remediation techniques, such as hot water flooding, are emerging technologies that have been proposed for the removal of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) from the subsurface. In this study a combined laboratory and modeling investigation was conducted to determine if hot water flooding techniques would improve NAPL mass removal compared to ambient temperature water flushing. Two experiments were conducted in a bench scale two-dimensional sandbox (55 cmx45 cmx1.3 cm) and NAPL saturations were quantified using a light transmission apparatus. In these immiscible displacement experiments t

Long-term effects of incubation temperature on growth and thermal physiology in a small ectotherm.

Thermal conditions in the developmental environment can substantially affect an individual's phenotype, particularly in egg-laying ectotherms. However, whether these effects persist into adulthood is rarely examined. To investigate this, we incubated delicate skink, Lampropholis delicata, eggs at either cool (22°C), mild (26°C) or hot (30°C) temperatures. After hatching, we measured growth, thermal performance curves of locomotor activity, and thermal sensitivity of resting metabolic rate of offspring as juveniles (4-6 weeks of age), sub-adults (approx. 200 days of age), and adults (approx. 2

Resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest during accidental hypothermia due to exhaustion and exposure.

A 16-year-old boy with accidental hypothermia and cardiopulmonary arrest due to exhaustion and exposure was resuscitated after warming measures -- hot wet towels, hot water bottles, and hot water enemas and gastric lavage -- had increased his rectal temperature from 25.2 to 28.0 degrees C. Despite prolonged cardiopulmonary arrest, recovery was almost complete, with no evident cerebral damage. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures should not be abandoned until the body temperature is more than 30 degrees C, because the prognosis in cases of accidental hypothermia without associated disease i

Response patterns of thermophilic Ascomycota to seasonal variations in Hammam Meskhoutine hot spring (Guelma, Algeria).

Hot spring microbial mats may host diverse and thermally adapted fungal communities. This study investigated the environmental factors controlling the seasonal distribution of culturable fungi at the Hammam Meskhoutine hot spring. Culture-dependent morphological and molecular analysis identified three Ascomycota species: Aspergillus fumigatus (311 colonies), Mycothermus thermophilus (79 colonies), and Thermomyces lanuginosus (5 colonies). Significant density fluctuations were observed for A. fumigatus (p < 0.001), which peaked in spring (13 × 105 CFU g- 1) before decreasing to a summer low (6

Investigation on Hot-Carrier Injection Mechanisms and Reliability Design-Based Strategies in Cryogenically Operated CMOS ROICs for Infrared Focal Plane Arrays.

Cryogenic operation of CMOS read-out integrated circuits (ROICs) is essential for high-performance infrared focal plane arrays but significantly affects carrier transport and device reliability. This work investigates hot-carrier injection (HCI) mechanisms in 180 nm NMOS transistors operating from room temperature down to 140 K. Electrical characterization and accelerated stress measurements reveal a strong impact of hot-carrier effects at low temperatures, resulting in increased degradation of device characteristics, particularly under channel hot-electron (CHE) and drain avalanche hot carrie
