BACKGROUND: Inadequate housing is an important social justice issue that adversely affects health.
METHODS: Drawing on an extended ethnography case study, this paper presents the results of a resident-led survey to highlight the health consequences of inadequate social housing, as residents wait for a 'fair regeneration' of their social housing 'flats' estate within a gentrifying inner-city Dublin neighbourhood.
RESULTS: Four key concerns were identified by residents as part of this analysis: (1) substandard housing conditions which are physically harmful to health; (2) the emotional toll of

OBJECTIVE: Safe and stable housing is foundational for child and adolescent health; likewise, housing instability and homelessness are associated with significant pediatric health risk. This narrative review sought to 1) describe the impact of stable housing, housing instability, and homelessness on child and adolescent health, and 2) explore advocacy interventions for pediatricians to support unstably housed children, youth, and families. While the relationship between health and housing is complex, here, we describe three primary mechanisms through which housing impacts pediatric health. Saf

Children who experience homelessness display substantial variation in outcomes, but little attention has been given to potential mechanisms linking their housing experiences to their functioning. This study explores these mechanisms using qualitative coding of 80 interviews with parents participating in a randomized control trial of housing interventions for families experiencing homelessness. Interviews were conducted an average of 7 months after families entered a homeless shelter, when most families had exited shelters to a variety of other housing options. Many parents described children a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Housing insecurity is an established social determinant of health, with older adults being disproportionately vulnerable. Despite growing research attention, no studies have reviewed the measurement tools existing specifically for this population. This systematic review synthesizes quantitative measures of housing insecurity used among older adults, examines their dimensional structures, and evaluates their psychometric properties.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across 5 electronic databases with no d

The connection between housing and health is well established. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the child's home, such as cleanliness, moisture, pests, noise, accessibility, injury risks, and other forms of housing environmental quality, all have the potential to influence multiple aspects of the health and development of children. Basic sanitation, reduced household crowding, other improvements in housing and expanded, and improved housing regulations have led to advances in children's health. For example, lead poisoning prevention policies have profoundly reduced childhood lead

PURPOSE: Despite US federal efforts to end and prevent homelessness among veterans, there has been limited examination of pre-military factors like childhood problems, associated with adult homelessness. This study examined childhood problems among homeless veterans and its relation to severity of homelessness and outcomes in supported housing.
METHODS: Using data from 1,161 homeless veterans at 19 sites enrolled in the Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, three types of childhood problems were examined: conduct disorder behaviors, family insta

Housing is not only a fundamental necessity but also a critical investment that significantly impacts mental health. This study investigates the relationship between residential and financial housing attributes and depressive symptoms, with a focus on the moderating role of socio-spatial factors, particularly housing inequality. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and applying hierarchical linear modeling, the analysis compares the explanatory power of residential attributes (i.e., space, condition, and neighborhood environment) and financial attributes (i.e., tenure, quantit

BACKGROUND: Permanent supportive housing and income assistance are valuable interventions for homeless individuals. Homelessness can reduce physical and social wellbeing, presenting public health risks for infectious diseases, disability, and death. We did a systematic review, meta-analysis, and narrative synthesis to investigate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of permanent supportive housing and income interventions on the health and social wellbeing of individuals who are homeless in high-income countries.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Epistemonikos, NIHR-

Awareness about laying hen welfare has led to the phase-out of conventional battery cages in favor of the adoption of alternative housing systems for egg production in many countries. However, the greater freedom of movement for animals and the presence of manure and litter (sawdust, straw, feathers, etc.) on the floor in some alternative housing systems may be suitable conditions for dusts, bacteria, and fungi to be aerosolized, raising concerns about indoor air quality and respiratory health of workers. The present project aimed at assessing and comparing indoor air quality and bioaerosols i

This study exploits an exogenous health shock-the birth of a child with a severe health condition that is considered by the medical community to be random-to investigate the effect of that shock on the family's housing situation. We use population-based data from an urban birth cohort study in the U.S. that oversampled non-marital births, resulting in a relatively disadvantaged sample that may be particularly susceptible to the effects of adverse life events. The health conditions were recorded in the infants' hospital medical records and coded by a pediatric consultant to capture conditions t

There are complex issues surrounding hospital discharge planning for people experiencing homelessness. The issue involves the disconnection across policy areas of housing, income supports and mental health, and later health generally. Different models for different types of communities (large urban, mid-size, small and rural areas) likely need to be developed as well as for different types of conditions and different housing histories. The quality of data needs improvement including accuracy. Housing items need to be part of admission processes so that the need for post-discharge housing can b

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare systems are increasingly interested in identifying patients' housing-related risks, but minimal information exists to inform screening question selection. The primary study aim is to evaluate discordance among 5 housing-related screening questions used in health care.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional multisite survey of social risks used in a convenience sample of adults seeking care for themselves or their child at 7 primary care clinics and 4 emergency departments across 9 states (2018-2019). Housing-related risks were measured using 2 questions from the Accounta

PURPOSE: To identify the challenges and needs experienced by the homeless or unstably housed population related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), along with the recommendations for addressing them.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted through a systematic search of five electronic databases to identify peer-reviewed articles that met eligibility criteria. Two independent reviewers conducted a two-step process, assessing titles/abstracts and full articles respectively, using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.
RESULTS: Of the 25 articles included in the review, 21 used quantitative

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify variables and profiles of individuals experiencing homelessness associated with service use and satisfaction, suicidal behaviors, residential stability, quality of life and adequacy of needs, and to evaluate whether one type of accommodation (shelters, transitional, permanent housing) is more closely associated with better service use and more positive impacts.
METHOD: The study is based on the synthesis of 10 articles recently published in international anglophone journals, in which a cohort of individuals experiencing homelessness responded at a 12-m

OBJECTIVES: Studies in low-income and middle-income countries have shown an adverse association between environmental exposures including poverty. There is little literature from South Asia. We aimed to test the associations between housing, indoor air pollution and children's respiratory health and recurrent fast breathing pneumonia in a poor urban setting in Pakistan.
SETTING: Primary health centres in a periurban slum in Karachi, Pakistan.
METHODS: Nested matched case-control study within a non-inferiority randomised controlled trial of fast breathing pneumonia (Randomised Trial of Amoxic

Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a critical public health concern, yet evidence on the associations between long-term residential conditions and loneliness trajectories remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study identified loneliness trajectories among middle-aged and older adults and examined the associations between housing and neighborhood characteristics and trajectory membership. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was applied to identify latent traj

BACKGROUND: There is a growing housing crisis in rural America with homelessness growing in addition to a growing number of substandard homes due to an inability to afford the costs of repair and maintenance. The goal of the current study was to assess the housing concerns in rural Alabama Black Belt communities which are often understudied and the relationship between housing quality and respiratory health.
METHODS: A semi-random sampling of five Black Belt counties was conducted to obtain a sample of 253 rural households. The survey was designed to obtain information regarding household inc

Across Europe, as governments turn to housing-led strategies in attempts to reverse rising rates of homelessness, increasing numbers of Housing First (HF) programs are being implemented. As HF programs become more widespread, it is important to understand how service users experience them compared to the more prevalent traditional treatment-first approach to addressing long-term homelessness. Although there is a large body of research on service users' experiences of Housing First compared to treatment-first in North American contexts, comparatively less is known about how these two categories

INTRODUCTION: Housing is a critical social determinant of health, and individuals living in substandard housing often face greater healthcare needs and financial burdens. Expanding health insurance is therefore especially important for this population. However, little is known about whether the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion affected disparities in coverage by housing quality. We examined whether Medicaid expansion improved insurance coverage equitably among low-income individuals living in homes with and without basic housing necessities.
METHODS: Using nationally representative su

Despite millennia of strong and continuous culture, inadequate housing has profound consequences on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. For example, the excessive and inequitable burden of childhood skin infections, rheumatic fever, gastrointestinal disease and ear infections can all be linked to failures in housing policy, funding and maintenance. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and peak bodies continue to call for greater community control and investment in housing. A commonality among stakeholders in this otherwise complex
