Although surgical repair is considered the standard treatment for intraarticular distal humeral fractures, most investigators have assessed its results using dual-plate fixation in 2 planes. The purpose of this study was to determine the functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of these complex fractures using Y-shaped reconstruction plates. We identified 17 patients who had operative treatment for Arbeitsgemeinschaft Für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) type 1, 3-C fractures using a Y-shaped Lambda plate (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN). Patients were recalled for follow-up that included record

BACKGROUND Open distal humeral fractures (DHFs) often lead to loss of elbow function, thereby seriously affecting patient quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of 2 surgical techniques to determine the better method for repairing open DHFs. Both groups were treated with immediate debridement first, and then group I had only internal fixation (IF), while group II underwent initial external fixation (EF) followed by IF surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study included 32 patients who had open DHFs between 2013 and 2018. Twelve patients underw

INTRODUCTION: Intramedullary nailing is one of the surgical treatments for humeral shaft fracture. Non-union is a common complication, with rates of 10-20%. The objective of this study was to compare non-union in humeral shaft fractures treated by intramedullary nailing with double distal locking, single distal locking or no locking.
HYPOTHESIS: Nailing with double distal locking decreases non-union rates compared to single or no locking.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective comparative study included 87 patients with closed humeral shaft fracture without neurologic deficit

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis is a widely used procedure for the treatment of fractures of the femur and the tibia. For a short time it is also used for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures. Among other advantages, the ambassadors of this technique emphasize the lower risk of nerve injuries when compared to open reduction and internal fixation. We report the case of secondary radial nerve palsy caused by percutaneous fixation of a plate above the antecubital fold. The nerve did not recover and the patient needed a tendon transfer to regain active extension of the fingers. This ca

BACKGROUND: Distal humeral fractures are notorious injuries, and they require surgical fixation. The reliability of reconstruction devices has been a subject of debate. Our primary outcome was to detect differences, if any, between two different groups of patients using the patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS) Global-10 form and to compare it with the Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS) results. Other secondary outcomes included the difference in union time between patients who received a reconstruction plate vs those who received a pre-contoured anatomical plate.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the results of posterior retraction technique to prevent iatrogenic radial nerve injury during humeral fracture surgery.
METHODS: Seventy-two patients who underwent surgery for a distal humerus fracture between 1996 and 2002 were reviewed. These 72 patients comprised Group 1. Following a cadaveric study on the vascularization of the radial nerve, a modified surgical approach was undertaken starting in 2002. Sixty-one patients who underwent this new surgical approach were included in Group 2. The rates of radial nerve deficit of the groups were compared using t

Treatment of complex distal humeral fractures in older patients with osteopenic bone remains a major surgical challenge. We report the results of 11 patients over 75 years of age who underwent semiconstrained sloppy-hinge total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) due to comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal humerus. There were 9 women and 2 men with a mean age of 79.6 years. The mean duration of follow up was 2.8 years. According to AO classification, there were 8 type C3 and 3 type C2 fractures. The mean time from injury to operation was 4.3 days and the mean length of hospital stay was 9.8

Osteotomy of the olecranon is commonly used to gain exposure for reconstruction of bi-condylar fractures of the distal humerus (type 13-C of classification AO), but there is controversy because of the considerable complications inherent in this technique. The aim of our study is to examine the anatomical and functional consequences of this technique of exposure on the elbow. This is a retrospective study over a continuous 7-year period. We confined ourselves to patients more than 15 years old who had presented with a bi-condylar fracture (type C of the AO) of the distal humerus, internally fix

BACKGROUND: Distal humeral fractures are the most common pediatric elbow fractures. Although frequent, displaced fractures are still challenging in treatment and may lead to unfavorable elbow deformities as long-term complications. Post-surgical evaluation always includes plain radiographs for evaluating alignment and bone union. However, there is currently no evidence supporting the role of follow-up radiographs at different time periods after pin removal.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the Baumann angle and lateral humeral-capitellar angle (LHCA) at pin-removal day, short-time peri

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to propose the modified trochleocapitellar index (mTCI), assess its reliability, and evaluate its correlation with post-traumatic elbow stiffness in type C2-3 distal humeral fractures among adults.
METHODS: From January 2013 to June 2017, a total of 141 patients with type C2-3 distal humeral fractures were included. The mTCI was calculated as the ratio between the modified trochlear and capitellar angles relative to the humeral axis (mTCI-HA), lateral humeral line (mTCI-LHL), and medial humeral line (mTCI-MHL) from anteroposterior radiographs taken im

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humeral fractures are one of the most common skeletal injuries in children. In cases of displacement and instability, the standard procedure is early closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. However, between 10 and 20 % of patients present late. According to the literature, patients with neglected fractures are those patients who presented for treatment after 14 days of injury. The delay is either due to lack of medical facilities or social and financial constraints. The neglected cases are often closed injuries with no vascular compromise. However,

BACKGROUND: The earliest distal humeral hemiarthroplasty (or elbow hemiarthroplasty [EHA]) implants, which date back to the late 1940s, were performed in patients with severe elbow joint injuries as an alternative to arthrodesis. After some clinical reports and case studies with a short follow-up, published in the 1990s, a new "anatomically convertible" EHA model was introduced in 2005 and became a common surgical option to treat complex elbow fractures and their sequelae. We describe the mid- and long-term outcomes of EHA performed to treat acute intra-articular fractures or their sequelae.

Background and Objectives: Arm wrestling is a simple and popular activity among young people that causes distal-third humeral fractures. However, injury to the young population may cause economic loss; therefore, they need to return to work as soon as possible. Accordingly, we aimed to compare radiological and functional outcomes of distal-third humeral fractures caused by arm wrestling treated with double and single plating. Materials and Methods: Thirty-four patients with distal-third humeral fractures caused by arm wrestling were treated between January 2015 and January 2021. They were sepa
