Thermoregulation during a six-hour exposure to warm, humid hyperbaric conditions.

PURPOSE: In a disabled submarine scenario, a pressurized rescue module (PRM) may be deployed to rescue survivors. If the PRM were to become disabled, conditions could become hot and humid exposing the occupants to heat stress. We tested the hypothesis that the rise in core temperature and fluid loss from sweating would increase with rising dry bulb temperature. METHODS: Twelve males (age 22 ± 3 years; height 179 ± 7 cm; mass 77.4 ± 8.3 kg) completed this study. On three occasions, subjects were exposed to high humidity and either 28-, 32-, or 35˚C for six hours in a dry hyperbaric chamber pre

Influenza Virus Infectivity Is Retained in Aerosols and Droplets Independent of Relative Humidity.

Pandemic and seasonal influenza viruses can be transmitted through aerosols and droplets, in which viruses must remain stable and infectious across a wide range of environmental conditions. Using humidity-controlled chambers, we studied the impact of relative humidity on the stability of 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus in suspended aerosols and stationary droplets. Contrary to the prevailing paradigm that humidity modulates the stability of respiratory viruses in aerosols, we found that viruses supplemented with material from the apical surface of differentiated primary human airway epit

Exercise performance over the menstrual cycle in temperate and hot, humid conditions.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of the menstrual cycle on prolonged exercise performance both in temperate (20°C, 45% relative humidity) and hot, humid (32°C, 60% relative humidity) conditions. METHODS: For each environmental condition, 12 recreationally active females were tested during the early follicular (day 3-6) and midluteal (day 19-25) phases, verified by measurement of estradiol and progesterone. For all four tests, thermoregulatory, cardiorespiratory, and perceptual responses were measured during 60 min of exercise at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption followed by an inc

The vulva skin microclimate: influence of panty liners on temperature, humidity and pH.

Many women use panty liners between menstrual periods. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of such products might influence the vulva skin. Twelve healthy women were studied on four occasions with three different product constructions and on one occasion without products. Temperature, surface wetness and surface pH were measured on vulva skin. Mean skin temperature when the women were wearing a conventional panty liner (with a non-breathable back sheet) was 35.9 degrees C, compared to 34.4 degrees C when wearing no panty liner at all (p < 0.01) and 34.5 degrees C when usin

Effects of temperature, relative humidity, and mode of breathing on canine airway secretions.

Airway secretions were collected from the upper trachea of eight healthy nosebreathing mongrel dogs under general anesthesia, and the electrolytes and osmolality of these secretions were determined. Compared to plasma, secretions contained 15% higher Na+ and 33% higher Cl-, were 18% higher in osmolality, but had a lower Na+/Cl- throughout the 6-h experiments. When six nose-breathing dogs were exposed to air at 28.5 degrees C and 95% relative humidity, secretion osmolality became lower, but Na+/Cl- remained unchanged. In four other dogs, secretions approached the osmolality of plasma when inspi

Tolerance of very hot humid environments by highly acclimatized Bantu at rest.

In order to know as much as possible about human reactions under conditions of extreme ambient air temperatures, and about the ability of men to survive under these conditions and to assist in their own survival, a series of studies was made in which groups of 10 men were exposed to temperature conditions ranging from 96°F. to 104°F. wet bulb (W.B.). Rigid criteria were employed to decide when men should be withdrawn from the test conditions. These were: (a) reaching a rectal temperature of 104°F., (b) suffering from repeated attacks of heat collapse which prevented the subject from standing e

Asymmetric Dual-Responsive Switch-Based Janus Photothermal Mask for Dynamic Humidity-Thermal Regulation.

Maintaining a dynamic humidity-thermal balance within the skin-device microclimate is critical for enhancing wearability and minimizing physiological and psychological discomfort. Herein, we present an asymmetric dual-responsive MXene/Viscose-PP (MVP) actuator integrated into a Janus photothermal mask for skin-mask microclimate dynamic humidity-thermal regulation. The MVP actuator switch with asymmetric bending deformation can achieve autonomous on-off switching under temperature and humidity stimulation. The Janus photothermal mask enables unidirectional transport of exhaled breath condensate

High ambient temperature, humidity, heat index, and stroke risk in a Mediterranean region.

BACKGROUND: Studies assessing the relationship between high ambient temperatures and stroke risk yielded conflicting results, while potential associations of humidity and heat stress with stroke risk remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of ambient temperature, humidity, and heat index (HI) with the risk of total stroke (combined ischemic-intracerebral hemorrhage [ICH]), ischemic stroke (IS), ICH, and transient ischemic attack (TIA) among older adults during the warm season in the Mediterranean region. METHODS: In this time-stratified case-crossover study, we utilized d

West Nile Virus Transmission Suitability Modeling for Culex pipiens via Temperature and Humidity.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, yet predicting its transmission remains a significant challenge for public health officials. Many studies use correlative statistical models to predict disease cases using temperature and humidity, but accessible mechanistic approaches that simulate mosquito behavior traits can capture more of the transmission process. This study adapts an existing R-language package, the Mosquito-borne Viral Suitability Estimator (MVSE), which was created to model Aedes aegypti mosquito transmission of dengue, and tunes

Janus Subnanochannels in Metalloporphyrin-Based Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks Enable Ultrasensitive Humidity Monitoring.

Controlling water organization within confined spaces is essential for developing high-performance solid-state protonic and electronic devices. Here, we report a family of metalloporphyrin (MPp) based conjugated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MPp-Cu-O (M = Fe, Ni, and Cu), that features Janus-type subnanochannels with alternately arranged hydrophilic CuO4 linkages and hydrophobic aromatic zones. This channel design enables the chemical and spatial confinement of water molecules into moderately bound hydrogen-bond (H-bond) networks that balance adsorption stability and dynamic exchange. Atomistic Mechanisms of Silicone Rubber Degradation Under Coupled Temperature-Humidity-Electric Field Conditions.

Silicone rubber is an important external insulating material for composite bushings, composite insulators, and other power equipment. During long-term service, it is inevitably exposed to coupled environmental and electrical stresses, such as elevated temperature, moisture ingress, strong electric fields, and partial discharge, which may lead to hydrophobicity loss, surface chalking, crack propagation, and particle shedding. To reveal the microscopic degradation mechanism of silicone rubber under complex operating conditions, a molecular model of methyl vinyl silicone rubber was constructed us

Hydrophilic cladding fiber based on silicone hydrogel for temperature, humidity, and salinity detection.

We propose a hydrophilic cladding optical fiber based on silicone hydrogel (HCF-SH), employing a highly hydrophilic copolymeric silicone hydrogel as the cladding and 98% glycerol as the high-refractive-index core. Owing to its high water content and excellent biocompatibility, the silicone hydrogel responds sensitively to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity, thereby modulating total internal reflection and altering optical transmission. The glycerol core ensures stability and provides a large refractive-index contrast with the cladding, enabling efficient light confinement a

Macroscale, humidity-insensitive, and stable structural superlubricity achieved with hydrogen-free graphene nanoflakes.

Achieving solid superlubricity in high-humidity environments is of great practical importance yet remains challenging nowadays, due to the complex physicochemical roles of water and concomitant oxidation on solid surfaces. Here we report a facile way to access humidity-insensitive solid superlubricity (coefficient of friction 0.0035) without detectable wear and running-in at a humidity range of 2-80%. Inspired by the concept of structural superlubricity, this is achieved between Au-capped microscale graphite flake and graphene nanoflake-covered hydrogen-free amorphous carbon (GNC a-C). Such GN

Fast Response Facile Fabricated IDE-Based Ultra-sensitive Humidity Sensor for Medical Applications.

An eco-friendly, biodegradable, flexible, and facile fabricated interdigital electrode-based capacitive humidity sensor with applications in health and medicine has been reported here. Several sensors use copper tape as electrodes on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, with non-woven paper as the sensing layer. Two different configurations of sensors were tested, i.e., with and without pores in the PET substrate. The sensing performance of both sensors has been tested for relative humidity ranging from 35 to 100% at temperatures ranging from 20 to 50 °C. The capacitance of the sens

Intrinsically Stretchable Conductive Self-Healable Organogels for Strain, Pressure, Temperature, and Humidity Sensing.

Intrinsically stretchable conductive self-healable organogels containing poly(lipoic acid), Al3+ ion, tannic acid, and reduced graphene oxide are produced in this report. These noncovalent networks interlocked through physical (hydrogen and coordination) bonds offered high stretchabilities and mechanical strengths as well as fast self-healing behaviors. The optimum organogel-based sensor showed outstanding pressure sensitivities (0.94 kPa-1 up to 10 and 1.07 kPa-1 for 10-50 kPa) and high strain responses (corresponding gauge factors of 1.1 and 0.4 for 0-50 and 50-100% stretching ratios). Photocurrent, humidity sensitivity and proton conductivity properties of a new sulfide semiconductor CsCuS4.

Copper chalcogenides have drawn considerable attention due to their prominent semiconducting properties. A new Cu-containing semiconductor, namely, CsCuS4 (1), was obtained by a halide salt flux method. Its structure featured 1D infinite ∞1[CuS4] - chains, where the polysulfide anion S42- was relatively rare in Cu chalcogenides. The compound was multifunctional and exhibited significant photocurrent, humidity sensitivity, and proton conductivity properties. Specifically, it exhibits an "on" state photocurrent response of 0.95 μA cm-2 and an "off" state photocurrent response of 0.55 μA cm-2 wit
