The global hidden hunger indices and maps: an advocacy tool for action.

The unified global efforts to mitigate the high burden of vitamin and mineral deficiency, known as hidden hunger, in populations around the world are crucial to the achievement of most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). We developed indices and maps of global hidden hunger to help prioritize program assistance, and to serve as an evidence-based global advocacy tool. Two types of hidden hunger indices and maps were created based on i) national prevalence data on stunting, anemia due to iron deficiency, and low serum retinol levels among preschool-aged children in 149 countries; and ii)

Processing of food pictures: influence of hunger, gender and calorie content.

In most cases obesity, a major risk factor for diabetes mellitus type 2 and other associated chronic diseases, is generated by excessive eating. For a better understanding of eating behavior, it is necessary to determine how it is modulated by factors such as the calorie content of food, satiety and gender. Twelve healthy normal weighted participants (six female) were investigated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. In order to prevent the influence of social acceptability, an implicit one-back task was chosen for stimulus presentation. We presented food (high- and low-cal

[Scientific production in nutrition and the public perception of hunger and eating in Brazil].

There is a contradiction between the perceptions held by different sectors of the Establishment with regard to the questions of hunger and nutrition in Brazil. On the one hand, the flagship of the present Brazilian government's social policy is the "Fome Zero" program. This program is based on the notion that the condition of hunger is socially relevant in this country. On the other hand, the scientific community in the field of nutrition has, through epidemiological studies, highlighted obesity as one of the most serious public health problems in Brazil. The reason why the public perception i

Effect of inhaled furosemide on air hunger induced in healthy humans.

Recent evidence suggests that inhaled furosemide relieves dyspnoea in patients and in normal subjects made dyspnoeic by external resistive loads combined with added dead-space. Furosemide sensitizes lung inflation receptors in rats, and lung inflation reduces air hunger in humans. We therefore hypothesised that inhaled furosemide acts on the air hunger component of dyspnoea. Ten subjects inhaled aerosolized furosemide (40 mg) or placebo in randomised, double blind, crossover experiments. Air hunger was induced by hypercapnia (50+/-2 mmHg) during constrained ventilation (8+/-0.9 L/min) before a

Effects of hunger on aggression, approach, and avoidance by juncos (Junco hyemalis).

The aggressive tendencies of male dark-eyed juncos Junco hyemalis did not differ significantly following deprivation from food for 20 and 60 min. Tendencies to approach opponents at food, in contrast, increased with longer deprivation. Acute hunger and aggression are thus not competing behavioral systems. Nor do differences in rates of approach by subordinates affect aggressive tendencies of dominant birds.

Listening to children with obesity: lived experiences of hunger, cravings, and satiety.

BACKGROUND: Appetite regulation is central to childhood obesity, yet little is known about how children themselves experience and interpret sensations of hunger, cravings, and satiety. This study aimed to explore how children living with overweight or obesity describe these sensations and how they respond to them in everyday life. METHODS: This qualitative study included 32 children (17 girls, 15 boys) aged 8-10 years who were interviewed four years after enrolling in a randomized controlled obesity treatment trial in Stockholm, Sweden. At follow-up (mean age 9.4 years, SD 0.8), the majority

Effects of hunger on neuronal histone modifications slow aging in Drosophila.

Hunger is an ancient drive, yet the molecular nature of pressures of this sort and how they modulate physiology are unknown. We find that hunger modulates aging in Drosophila. Limitation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) or activation of hunger-promoting neurons induced a hunger state that extended life span despite increased feeding. Alteration of the neuronal histone acetylome was associated with BCAA limitation, and preventing these alterations abrogated the effect of BCAA limitation to increase feeding and extend life span. Hunger acutely increased feeding through usage of the histone

From psychosis to Wernicke encephalopathy: a case of hunger strike in prison.

Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a neuropsychiatric condition associated with  thiamine deficiency that includes a triad of mental status changes, ophthalmoplegia, and ataxia. Worsening WE may lead to Korsakoff syndrome(KS), in which cognitive impairments such as confabulation and memory deficits and also psychiatric symptoms may occur. Diagnosis of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome can be complicated in many cases. We present the case of a prisoner who commenced a hunger strike and developed WE. The preceding factors were associated with his oral intake refusal, which originated from his mental diso

Love is a physiological motivation (like hunger, thirst, sleep or sex).

The multitude of terms associated with love has given rise to a false perception of love. In this paper, only maternal and romantic love are considered. Love is usually regarded as a feeling, motivation, addiction, passion, and, above all, an emotion. This confusion has consequences in the lives of human beings, leading not only to divorces, suicides, femicides but possibly also to a number of mental illnesses and suffering. Therefore, it is crucial to first clarify what is meant by emotion, motivation and love. This work aims to finally place love within the category of physiological motivati

Effects of hunger on emotional arousal responses and attention/memory biases.

In this study, we examined how emotional arousal interacts with hunger states and the processing of food stimuli. In general, arousal enhances the processing of high-priority information at the expense of lower priority information (Mather & Sutherland, 2011). Because food has been a biologically relevant stimulus in primates throughout evolution, detecting it in the environment and remembering its location has high priority. In our study, inducing arousal enhanced attention to subsequent food stimuli. In addition, we manipulated whether participants were hungry or sated to examine how hunger

Neuroimaging evidence implicating cerebellum in the experience of hypercapnia and hunger for air.

Recent neuroimaging and neurological data implicate cerebellum in nonmotor sensory, cognitive, vegetative, and affective functions. The present study assessed cerebellar responses when the urge to breathe is stimulated by inhaled CO(2). Ventilation changes follow arterial blood partial pressure CO(2) changes sensed by the medullary ventral respiratory group (VRG) and hypothalamus, entraining changes in midbrain, pons, thalamus, limbic, paralimbic, and insular regions. Nearly all these areas are known to connect anatomically with the cerebellum. Using positron emission tomography, we measured r

Hunger pain: a poor indicator of peptic ulcer in a developing country.

Endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum and stool examinations for ova and parasites were performed in 63 adult Peruvian patients with "hunger pain" (HP) and other dyspeptic symptoms. No lesion capable of provoking HP was found at endoscopy in 50 (78%) of the 63 patients. Only 7 (12%) of the patients had evidence of active or healed peptic ulcers. Another 6 patients (10%) had either gastric erosions or duodenitis. One (2%) of the patients was infected with hookworm, a parasite that produces epigastric pain mimicking HP. The 12% rate of peptic ulcer in Peruvian patients with HP contra

Effect of naltrexone on food intake, hunger, and satiety in obese men.

Increasing doses of naltrexone (25 to 200 mg) given over 4 consecutive days reduced intake of laboratory luncheon meals by 30% in 17 obese men. Meal size remained suppressed in the laboratory during the week following naltrexone administration. Water intake in the laboratory and body weight were not affected. Rates of ingestion and subjective ratings suggested that naltrexone reduced appetite rather than promoted early satiation. Nausea and other side effects occurred on 1 or 2 days during the naltrexone week in seven subjects whose food intake was reduced. Food intake was also reduced in seve

Hunger & satiety signals: another key mechanism involved in the NAFLD pathway.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent metabolic disease, although prevalence could change according to region, nowadays is considered a public health problem whose real impact on the health system is unknown. NAFLD has a multifactorial and complex pathophysiology, due to this, developing a unique and effective pharmacological treatment has not been successful in reverting or avoiding the progression of this liver disease. Even though NAFLD pathophysiology is known, all actual treatments are focused on modifying or regulating the metabolic pathways, some of which inter

Hunger does not motivate reward in women remitted from anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Hunger enhances sensitivity to reward, yet individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) are not motivated to eat when starved. This study investigated brain response to rewards during hunger and satiated states to examine whether diminished response to reward could underlie food restriction in AN. METHODS: Using a delay discounting monetary decision task known to discriminate brain regions contributing to processing of immediate rewards and cognitive control important for decision making regarding future rewards, we compared 23 women remitted from AN (RAN group; to reduce the confoundin

Plasma leptin, energy intake and hunger following total hip replacement surgery.

1. This study aimed to investigate the possible role of leptin in post-traumatic anorexia by making pre- and post-operative (0-8 days) measurements of circulating leptin concentrations in six patients undergoing elective total hip replacement for osteoarthritis. 2. Mean daily hunger rating (four categories) and food intake (assessed by food record charts) were measured pre-operatively, as well as post-operatively for the first 5 days (days 0-5). Leptin concentrations, circulating metabolites [glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, glutamine and 3-hydroxybutyrate] and insulin and cortisol concent

Hunger and Brain Health Risk Factors among US High School Students.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between hunger and brain health remains understudied in adolescence. This study examines the relationship between experienced hunger attributable to inadequate food at home and health and behavioral factors relevant to brain health in a nationally representative US high school student sample. METHODS: We pooled 2017-2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data across 16 states (N = 74,152 high school students). Hunger resulting from inadequate food at home - hereafter termed hunger - was assessed by asking students how often they went hungry in the past month due to
