Vesicovaginal reflux (VVR) is a functional disorder seen in girls and women. It may be asymptomatic or cause incontinence and dribbling symptoms. It is often associated with high body mass index (BMI) and infrequent voiding or abnormal voiding position. It is important to be aware of this entity as it can be mistaken for a vesicovaginal or urethrovaginal fistula or hydrocolpos on imaging all of which require surgical treatment. The fluid collecting in the vagina in VVR is urine which refluxes during micturition via the introitus from the urinary bladder into the vagina and can leak out later.

Obstructive vaginal and uterine anomalies including imperforate hymen, transverse vaginal septum, and vaginal and/or cervical atresia or aplasia, might rarely present in infancy or childhood with hydrocolpos and/or hydrometra but they usually go unrecognized until presentation with amenorrhea and hematocolpos and/or hematometra in puberty. They should always be included in the differential diagnosis of a suprapubic and/or introital mass; in the latter case, vaginal vascular malformations and vaginal tumors should also be considered. Uterovaginal aplasia typically manifests with amenorrhea in p

We recently treated one female infant and two young girls with coincidence of three anomalies: --hypoplastic ectopic kidney; --single vaginal ectopic ureter; --ipsilateral genital abnormality. Clinical presentation was lifelong wetting, "multicystic" kidney, urinary tract infection, or abdominal pain. The diagnostic studies include ultrasonography, excretory urography, cystography and vaginoscopic examination with retrograde catheterization, rarely radionuclide scanning. This study failed in two cases, with non visualization of the hypoplastic and dysplastic kidney, and diagnosis was done at l

BACKGROUND: The prenatal detection rate of fetal uterine effusion is very low, and current case reports mainly focus on pathological hydrometrocolpos. We presented two cases of fetal physiological uterine effusion with different ultrasonic characteristics and compared them with one case of hydrometrocolpos with the hope of identifying strategies to reduce misdiagnosis of fetal uterine effusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: This paper reports the cases of two female fetuses with abnormal pelvic echoes in the third trimester, referred to a tertiary center to be screened for suspected pelvic teratoma and

BACKGROUND: Hydrometrocolpos (HMC) is a clinical condition in which there is a cystic distension of the vagina (hydrocolpos), uterus and sometimes, fallopian tubes (hydrosalpinx) with fluid. This study described our experience with cases of HMC seen in our practice, and highlighted the flare in our practice.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of cases of HMC managed at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital between September 2010 and August 2012.
RESULTS: There were seven cases; their ages ranged from 2 to 27 days (median 13 days). All the patients had abdominal distensio

A 12-years-old male child presented with polydactyly and syndactyly of hands, hypospadias, AND undescended testes. He was a known case of Tetrology of Fallot. One important differential in our case was Bardet-Biedl syndrome, but it was ruled out due to lack of evidence of central obesity, mental retardation and retinitis pigmentosa. At this time, there is no molecular testing available to distinguish these two syndromes.

PURPOSE: Though the Müllerian duct anomalies are rare in incidence, their variable age, and mode of presentation makes their management difficult.
METHODS: In the last 10 years authors managed 14 patients with different types of Müllerian anomalies. There were eight patients with complete Müllerian agenesis: three of partial Müllerian agenesis, one patient had uterine didelphys with vertical and transverse vaginal septum on left side, one patient had uterine didelphys with cervical agenesis on the right side, one patient had MRKH with anorectal malformation.
RESULTS: Patients with complete M

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal diagnosis of a cloacal anomaly is difficult. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can assist in the identification of the connection and continuity of a cystic mass to confirm the diagnosis of a cloacal anomaly.
CASE REPORTS: In the first case, a fetal abdominal cystic mass was observed at 32 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography revealed a retrovesical septate hypoechoic mass with bilateral hydronephrosis. MRI demonstrated a midline cystic mass connected to a dilated uterus and a possible fistula between the bladder and vagina. In the second case, a fetal abdominal septate cyst

The endometrium demonstrates a wide spectrum of normal and pathologic appearances throughout menarche as well as during the prepubertal and postmenopausal years and the first trimester of pregnancy. Disease entities include hydrocolpos, hydrometrocolpos, and ovarian cysts in pediatric patients; gestational trophoblastic disease during pregnancy; endometritis and retained products of conception in the postpartum period; and bleeding caused by polyps, submucosal fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, or endometrial adenocarcinoma. Other findings include tamoxifen-associated changes, intrauterine flu

The presence of congenital urogenital malformations is relatively common in bitches. However, cases of double vagina in the literature are scarce, and the ones reported usually accompany other urogenital defects. The vaginal anomaly was an incidental finding in the present case during a routine spay and was not accompanied by any other malformations. A detailed presentation of the diagnosis and surgical management of the double vagina is presented in the current paper. A 1-year-old nulliparous American Staffordshire Terrier bitch was presented for dysuria in the past 24 h. After inspection and

PURPOSE: Review the usefulness of a comprehensive classification system to guide the type of uro-genital reconstruction needed in cloacal malformation.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis of cloacal malformation operated from 1991 to 2021 was done, corelating the cloacal anatomy to the uro-genital reconstruction needed. A comprehensive classification system for cloacal was developed. This classification takes into account all components of cloaca, presence of bladder neck and proximal urethra; rectal and vaginal entry into the cloaca and vaginal duplication with or without significant hydrocolpo

BACKGROUND: Persistent urogenital sinus is one of the rare urogenital anomalies, which commonly presents as hydrometrocolpos. Fetal urinary ascites as a presentation of persistent urogenital sinus is extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: We report on a preterm infant with antenatal diagnosis of hydrometrocolpos and massive urinary ascites secondary to urogenital sinus without any bladder or renal abnormalities.
CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion in the diagnosis of persistent urogenital sinus especially in infants presenting with urinary as

Imperforate hymen is most commonly an isolated finding and usually remains asymptomatic until puberty. Rarely, symptoms of imperforate hymen manifest antenatally as well as in the neonatal period, requiring surgical correction for life-threatening consequences. We report a 5-day-old infant with a large hydrometrocolpos causing severe renal compromise and abdominal ascites, successfully surgically treated in the neonatal period. Associated polydactyly suggested McKusick-Kaufman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Congenital vaginal obstruction commonly presents after puberty and presentation in infancy is uncommon. Due to lack of awareness, diagnosis may be missed in infants, sometimes with disastrous consequences.
METHOD: A retrospective review of 9 neonates and infants treated for congenital vaginal obstruction in 16 years.
RESULTS: The patients were aged 2 days to 4 months (median 28 days) at presentation. The main presenting feature was a lower abdominal mass, producing intestinal and urinary obstruction in 7 patients. In 2 patients, other conditions were suspected and diagnosis made

Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is a multisystemic disorder diagnosed on the basis of a combination of primary and secondary clinical features that include retinal dystrophy, obesity, polydactyly, cognitive dysfunction, and renal malformations. We report a unique case of BBS in a 13-year old girl of African-American descent who presented with retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, polydactyly, learning disabilities, precocious puberty, hypertension, renal cysts, and Hirschprung disease. Further evaluation revealed a history of precocious puberty, which is antithetical to the common manifestations of BBS,

A pair of male thoraco-omphalopagus twins with common liver, diaphragm, pericardium, and sternum was separated at the age of 59 days after a parasitic relationship had developed between them. Before separation one baby developed acute renal failure during which he had no edema and had normal serum electrolytes, urea nitrogen, and creatinine due to "autodialysis" by the other baby. The boys have now grown normally to the age of 6 years. A pair of female ischiopagus tetrapus twins who had a common terminal ileum and colon with imperforate anus was separated at the age of 20 h. The smaller baby h

Thorough physical examination is a must for proper diagnosis of medical diseases and to elucidate all physical findings. Abdominal pain is a very common presentation to Emergency Department, compromising 5%-10% of all visits, and around a quarter are discharged with no particular diagnosis. Pyocolpos is one of those presentations that requires a thorough physical examination, including that of the external genitalia. A 3-year-old girl presented with recurrent history of abdominal pain and a recent history of fever with acute abdomen picture-like presentation, with difficulty voiding over the p

McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome is caused by chronic water and electrolyte hypersecretion from an intestinal tumor, usually a villous adenoma, located in the rectum or sigmoid. Patients often have dehydration, hypovolemic shock and kidney failure associated with hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypochloremia and metabolic acidosis. We report a 62-year-old male, suffering chronic diarrhea for eight years who was admitted after a syncope. He had severe hypokalemia, hyponatremia, metabolic acidosis, hypovolemia and acute renal failure. After his metabolic disorders were corrected, a colonoscopy showed a l
