The ferroelastic phase transition in hydrogen cyanide studied by density functional theory.

We report calculations of the crystal structures and lattice dynamics of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases of the molecular crystal hydrogen cyanide, HCN, using density functional theory methods. By treating negative pressure as a proxy for raising temperature we show that the ferroelastic phase transition involves softening of a transverse acoustic mode, and confirm that the phase transition is discontinuous. Analysis of the complete phonon spectrum shows that the acoustic modes are responsible both for the very large thermal expansion seen in HCN and also for the thermodynamic driving f

Hydrogen cyanide and carboxyhemoglobin assessment in an open space fire-related fatality.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) can be a major contributory factor in death from fire-related inhalation injury. Although carbon monoxide (CO) is considered the lethal agent of smoke in fires, its liability as a cause of death is sometimes debatable. The purpose of this report is to present the case of an 80-year-old man with locomotor disabilities who died due to an open space fire of vegetation debris and household waste in his yard. We evaluated here the concentrations of HCN and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and their contribution to the mechanism of death. In addition, the risk factors and the contribu

Determination of hydrogen cyanide in cigarette mainstream smoke by LC/MS/MS.

An LC/MS/MS method is presented for the determination of hydrogen cyanide in cigarette mainstream smoke. Cyanide is derivatized with 2,3'-naphthalenedicarboxaldehyde and taurine to form a benzo[f]isoindole derivative, which is then analyzed by LC/MS/MS. Isotopic KCN (K13C15N) was used as an internal standard. The regression equation was linear within the range 2.4-331 ng/mL for cyanide with a correlation coefficient > 0.999. The LOD was calculated as 4.1 ng/cigarette. The influence of the sodium hydroxide trapping solution concentration on the results is discussed. A 1 M solution showed the be

Oxidative treatment of cyanide in wastewater using hydrogen peroxide and homogeneous catalyst.

Batch kinetic tests were conducted to determine the effects of experimental conditions and catalysts on cyanide degradation. Cyanide degradation by hydrogen peroxide was found to follow first-order kinetics. Reaction rates increased with increasing pH and decreasing temperature. The activation energy for cyanide degradation by hydrogen peroxide was found to be -13.81 kJ/mol. The addition of Cu2+ or Cd2+ as catalysts resulted in increasing reaction rates. In alkaline conditions, the catalytic effects of Cu2+ or Cd2+ were accelerated and Cu2+ was found to be a more effective catalyst than Cd2+.

A study on house fire victims: age, carboxyhemoglobin, hydrogen cyanide and hemolysis.

Correlation among age, concentrations of carboxyhemoglobin and hydrogen cyanide, oxygen density and hemolysis were studied in 120 house fire victims. Victims aged over 60 years comprised approximately 50% of the pooled subjects. Blood samples were mainly collected from the left ventricle, but sometimes from both the right and left ventricles. The concentration of carboxyhemoglobin ranged from 1-95%, of which 71 persons (59.7%) died with carboxyhemoglobin concentrations below 60%. Carboxyhemoglobin concentrations below 10% were found in 9 persons (7.5%). Most of these cases involved the elderly

Thermodynamics of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen fluoride binding to cytochrome c peroxidase and its Asn-82-->Asp mutant.

The thermodynamics of binding of fluoride and cyanide to cytochrome c peroxidase (CCP) and its Asn-82-->Asp mutant (D82CCP) in phosphate and acetate buffer at an ionic strength of 0.15 mol.kg-1 from pH 5.0 to 7.1 were investigated by titration calorimetry at 289 and 297 K. The binding reactions are enthalpically driven. The fluoride-binding constants determined from the titration calorimetry results were in agreement with those determined from difference-spectroscopy measurements. For cyanide binding to CCP at 297.9 K, the binding constant decreased from 8.95 (+/- 0.83) x 10(5) M-1 at pH 7.0 t

Development of an Inexpensive RGB Color Sensor for the Detection of Hydrogen Cyanide Gas.

An inexpensive red, green, blue (RGB) color sensor was developed for detecting low ppm concentrations of hydrogen cyanide gas. A piece of glass fiber filter paper containing monocyanocobinamide [CN(H2O)Cbi] was placed directly above the RGB color sensor and an on chip LED. Light reflected from the paper was monitored for RGB color change upon exposure to hydrogen cyanide at concentrations of 1.0-10.0 ppm as a function of 25%, 50%, and 85% relative humidity. A rapid color change occurred within 10 s of exposure to 5.0 ppm hydrogen cyanide gas (near the NIOSH recommended exposure limit). A more

The role of hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide in fire casualties: a prospective study.

Determinations of blood cyanide and carboxyhemoglobin concentrations were performed in 18 victims found dead in buildings after fires during a 2-year period. The results indicated that 50% of the victims had been exposed to toxic levels of hydrogen cyanide and 90% to toxic levels of carbon monoxide. Lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide were found in 83% of the victims. In one case a lethal blood cyanide but a non-toxic blood carboxyhemoglobin value was found. It is concluded that carbon monoxide appears to be more important than hydrogen cyanide as a toxic agent in the fire atmosphere, but

Hydrogen Cyanide Generation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa Blunts the Host Innate Immune Response.

BACKGROUND: The biological mediator hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is produced by certain pathogenic bacteria. Hydrogen cyanide exerts multiple effects in mammalian cells: at low concentrations, it has cytoprotective regulatory effects, whereas at high concentrations, it blocks mitochondrial electron transport by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase, thereby halting cellular metabolism. Here, we evaluated whether bacterial HCN confers resistance to the host immune response. We used Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a model organism, since it is a clinically significant HCN-generating bacterial species and a common

Harnessing Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN): Responsive Chemical Tools for Delivering an Emerging Gasotransmitter.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an emerging gasotransmitter, joining NO, CO, and H2S in a group of important endogenous signaling and regulatory molecules. Despite this importance, synthetic HCN donors that respond to broadly tunable stimuli remain absent. Here, I report a platform approach for developing synthetic HCN donors that can be tuned to release HCN on demand in response to endogenous stimuli. The reported donors are stable in solution until activated by a specific stimulus, in this case esterases, after which they release a caged cyanohydrin that is spontaneously hydrolyzed in water to gen

Hydrogen cyanide produced by Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 is a key aphicidal metabolite.

A biocontrol bacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 promotes plant health through multifaceted mechanisms. In this study, we used P. chlororaphis O6 mutants to examine metabolites with aphicidal activity. Direct application of intact P. chlororaphis cells to the surface of second-instar nymphs of the green peach aphid resulted in no mortality. However, nymphs died when exposed only to the volatiles produced by the P. chlororaphis O6 wild-type strain grown on rich media. Mutants lacking the production of two antibiotics, phenazine and pyrrolnitrin, or the insect toxin FitD retained the aphicida

Detection of hydrogen cyanide from oral anaerobes by cavity ring down spectroscopy.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) has been recognized as a potential biomarker for non-invasive diagnosis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in the lung. However, the oral cavity is a dominant production site for exhaled HCN and this contribution can mask the HCN generated in the lung. It is thus important to understand the sources of HCN production in the oral cavity. By screening of oral anaerobes for HCN production, we observed that the genus of Porphyromonas, Prevotella and Fusobacterium generated low levels of HCN in vitro. This is the first study to show that oral anaerobes are capable of producin

Optical parametric oscillator-based photoacoustic detection of hydrogen cyanide for biomedical applications.

A versatile, continuous wave, optical parametric oscillator is used in combination with photoacoustic spectroscopy for long-term trace gas experiments of volatile compounds emitted by biological samples. The optical parametric oscillator-based spectrometer (wavelength near 3 μm, 8-MHz linewidth, output power ∼1 W) is successfully tested for the detection of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) emission from clover leaves, and Pseudomonas bacteria; in addition, the presence of HCN in exhaled human breath is measured. For specific experiments, the spectrometer is operated continuously up to 10 days and has a

Impact of non-constant concentration exposure on lethality of inhaled hydrogen cyanide.

The ten Berge model, also known as the toxic load model, is an empirical approach in hazard assessment modeling for estimating the relationship between the inhalation toxicity of a chemical and the exposure duration. The toxic load (TL) is normally expressed as a function of vapor concentration (C) and duration (t), with TL equaling C(n) × t being a typical form. Hypothetically, any combination of concentration and time that yields the same "toxic load" will give a constant biological response. These formulas have been developed and tested using controlled, constant concentration animal studie

Estimating hydrogen cyanide in forage sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ) by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a toxic chemical that can potentially cause mild to severe reactions in animals when grazing forage sorghum. Developing technologies to monitor the level of HCN in the growing crop would benefit graziers, so that they can move cattle into paddocks with acceptable levels of HCN. In this study, we developed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations to estimate HCN in forage sorghum and hay. The full spectral NIRS range (400-2498 nm) was used as well as specific spectral ranges within the full spectral range, i.e., visible (400-750 nm), shortwave (800-1100 nm) and n

Theoretical calculation about the valence and Rydberg excited states of hydrogen cyanide.

The singlet and triplet excited states of hydrogen cyanide have been computed by using the complete active space self-consistent field and completed active space second order perturbation methods with the atomic natural orbital (ANO-L) basis set. Through calculations of vertical excitation energies, we have probed the transitions from ground state to valence excited states, and further extensions to the Rydberg states are achieved by adding 1s1p1d Rydberg orbitals into the ANO-L basis set. Four singlet and nine triplet excited states have been optimized. The computed adiabatic energies and the

Ab initio quantum Monte Carlo study of the positronic hydrogen cyanide molecule.

Quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to investigate the binding of a positron to the hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and lithium hydride (LiH) molecules. Our value of the adiabatic positron affinity (PA) of LiH of 1.010(3) eV is very close to the best theoretical value of 1.005 eV, obtained from variational calculations using explicitly correlated Gaussian basis sets [K. Strasburger, J. Chem. Phys. 114, 00615 (2001)]. We have obtained a reliable estimate of 0.0378(48) eV for the PA of the HCN molecule, which is almost 20 times larger than that obtained at the Hartree-Fock level, and strongly supports t

Heterogeneous catalytic degradation of cyanide using copper-impregnated pumice and hydrogen peroxide.

The main objective of this research was to investigate the oxidative destruction of free cyanide with hydrogen peroxide and copper-impregnated pumice as a heterogeneous catalyst. Original or copper-impregnated pumices added alone were not effective adsorbents of negatively charged cyanide ions due to incompatible surface interactions. Peroxide and original pumices added together were also ineffective in removing cyanide. However, for all of the three natural pumices tested with various particle size fractions, the use of copper-impregnated pumices and peroxide together significantly enhanced b
