This review includes a variety of extremely rare and unusual hymenoptera sting (HS) circumstances with regard to sting localization, geographic region, massivity of multiple stings, and particularly related to clinical symptoms. Such reactions occur in a temporal relationship to HS (s), differ from typical allergic symptomatology, and sometimes need follow-up during many months. With respect to pathogenesis, the major mechanisms involved are toxic, autoimmune, and other delayed immunological ones. While delayed inflammatory symptoms of the nervous system are considered as delayed hypersensitiz

Simultaneous reactivity with the venoms of different Hymenoptera is commonly seen in patients allergic to insect venoms. Strong, though individually variable, cross-reactivity occurs between the venoms of different Vespinae species (Vespula, Dolichovespula, Vespa). In Middle Europe, anaphylaxis after European hornet stings is nearly always due to cross-reactivity with Vespula venom. The identification of the primary venom in patients testing positive for Vespula and Polistes (paper wasps) is particularly important in Mediterranean areas. Component-resolved diagnosis with the marker allergens V

BACKGROUND: Stings by insects can precipitate many signs and symptoms of dermatological and ocular diseases. Of particular importance is the anaphylaxis after Hymenoptera stings. Selection of the appropriate venom for immunotherapy requires a precise diagnosis, which is frequently difficult to confirm since the history presented by the patient is many times not conclusive and diagnostic tests are often positive for bee venom (BV) and vespula venom (VV). This double positivity is either caused by true double sensitization or by antibodies cross-reactive to homologous peptide sequences or to cro

The European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a polyphagous insect able to develop on grapes and wild plants. We tested the hypothesis that the parasitoid Dibrachys cavus (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) uses the larval frass in its host search. A two-armed olfactometer was used to measure the attractiveness of L. botrana larvae, their silk, or their frass after larvae were fed on different host plants. Frass of three Lepidoptera (L. botrana, Eupoecillia ambiguella, Sphinx ligustri) and one Orthoptera (Chorthippus brunneus) was assayed, but only L. botrana was used to

Morphological data concerning the venom gland of worker ants of Pachycondyla striata revealed that this gland consists of three distinct regions: an external secretory portion, composed by a secretory filament that bifurcates in order to give rise to other two filaments; an internal secretory portion, represented by the convoluted gland; and a storage portion, represented by a sac-shaped reservoir. The ultrastructural analysis showed that the reservoir is enveloped by a simple pavementous epithelium, coated internally with a cuticle. The external secretory portion is composed by cells forming

As many pollinator populations around the world decline due to habitat loss, improving management practices for native pollinators becomes a priority. Pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems and play irreplaceable roles in the global food system. Pollinator hotels can provide a safe, protected space suited for many different species, and can also be used as educational tools. However, these structures also often contain parasites attracted to the nests within, which can multiply without maintenance. Pollinator hotels are usually filled with nesting cavities in a variety of materials in

Apis cerana cerana exhibits a prominent biological trait known as comb gnawing. In this study, gnawed combs from colonies during different seasons were collected, investigating the comb age and locations of gnawing. Patterns of comb gnawing were recorded, and the effects of 2 factors, namely, comb type and season, on the mass of wax residues and the gnawed surface area were measured. The results revealed that A. c. cerana predominantly gnaws combs that have been used for over 6 months, with gnawing concentrated in the brood-rearing area. In the first 3 seasons, significantly higher masses of w

Patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA), especially those with severe anaphylaxis, frequently have concomitant clonal mast cell disease (MCD) in the form of systemic mastocytosis or monoclonal mast cell activation syndrome. Detection of clonal MCD is important because it will have significant consequences for managing HVA. Therefore, we recommend patients with HVA be systematically screened for clonal MCD. The pretest probability of clonal MCD can be assessed in a stepwise fashion starting with examination of the skin for typical monomorphic maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis lesions;

Velvet ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) are a family of solitary parasitoid wasps that are renowned for their painful stings. We explored the chemistry underlying the stings of mutillid wasps of the genus Dasymutilla Ashmead. Detailed analyses of the venom composition of five species revealed that they are composed primarily of peptides. We found that two kinds of mutillid venom peptide appear to be primarily responsible for the painful effects of envenomation. These same peptides also have defensive utility against invertebrates, since they were able to incapacitate and kill honeybees. Both act

BACKGROUND: Bees provide critical pollination services to a diversity of flowering plants, facilitating the function of terrestrial ecosystems and global food production. Here, we present a checklist of bee species collected in conjunction with a larger systematic study in the Bear River Mountains of northern Utah, United States, over the course of three consecutive summers (2020-2022). The survey was conducted on public lands managed by the United States Forest Service. We collected 8,500 bee specimens using pan traps, hand nets and trap nests, representing at least 199 bee species belonging

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to identify phenotypes at-risk of Hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis (HVA), focusing on different perspectives (epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic) in order to adapt future preventive strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: HVA remains one of the leading causes of anaphylaxis, with a broad pattern of symptoms. Although most cases occur outside healthcare settings, data indicate a high emergency admission rate due to insect stings. Mortality is often underestimated because of the lack of witnesses and difficulties in recognizing the signs and the culprit. Ta

Neonicotinoids are the most widely used pesticide compared to other major insecticide classes known worldwide and have the fastest growing market share. Many studies showed that neonicotinoid pesticides harm honeybee learning and farming activities, negatively affect colony adaptation and reduce pollination abilities. Bumblebees are heavily preferred species all over the world in order to ensure pollination in plant production. In this study, sublethal effects of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam on the brain of Bombus terrestris workers were analyzed. Suspensions (1/1000, 1/100, 1/10

BACKGROUND: Allergic reactions to Hymenoptera stings can have varying levels of severity, according to the Müller grading system.
METHODS: By an epidemiological concept, this is a retrospective cohort study. The observed cohort was represented by patients referred to the University Clinic Golnik due to Hymenoptera allergic reaction in the period from 1997 to 2015. From the immunological database of the University Clinic Golnik, we obtained laboratory data (sIgE, skin tests and basophil activation test). The clinical characteristics of patients were obtained from BIRPIS. With the help of a que

We report the nesting biology and ecology of Megachile cephalotes Smith, 1853 for the first time in Pakistan. Wooden and bamboo trap nests were deployed at three different locations in Bahawalpur district, Pakistan, from January 2020 to May 2021. A total of 242 nests of M. cephalotes were occupied in all three locations with the maximum abundance in the Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies. Megachile cephalotes remained active from March to September (the spring and summer seasons). In a nest, females made 7-8 brood cells each having a length of 1.2-2.3 cm. Plant resin was used to construct c

Alkaloids are important metabolites found across a variety of organisms with diverse ecological functions. Of particular interest are alkaloids found in ants, organisms well known for dominating the ecosystems they dwell in. Within ants, alkaloids are found in venom and function as potent weapons against heterospecific species. However, research is often limited to pest species or species with parasitic lifestyles and thus fails to address the broader ecological function of ant venom alkaloids. Here we describe a new species of free-living Megalomyrmex ant: Megalomyrmex peetersi sp. n. In addi

Andrena (Poecilandrena) Hedicke is a subgenus of small solitary bees, with the greatest diversity in the Eastern Mediterranean Region-an important but understudied biodiversity hotspot for bees. We studied Andrena (Poecilandrena) collected mostly in Israel and the West Bank, and make several additions to the regional fauna. We provide the first comprehensive review of Andrena (Poecilandrena) species currently known from Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, including diagnostic keys to females and males, descriptions of new species and unknown sexes, and detailed information for ea

New plant protection strategies focus on minimizing chemical pesticide use and increasing their compatibility with biological control agents. The objective was to evaluate the side-effects of glyphosate, diflubenzuron, malathion, tebuconazole and triflumuron (at 720, 45, 400, 150 and 20 g ai ha-1, respectively), pesticides authorized for soybean crops in Brazil, on the parasitoid Palmistichus elaeisis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) reared on Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The emergence and female numbers produced per P. elaeisis female were higher in A. gemmatalis pupae from caterp
