Recent studies have revealed diverse therapeutically interesting pharmacological properties of a standardized Hypericum perforatum extract (HpE) potentially useful for treatments of patients with metabolic and psychiatric disorders. Consequently, the presented experiments were designed to test usefulness of the extract for the treatment of comorbid conditions of mood disturbances and anxiety in diabetic rats. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was induced in overnight fasted rats by a single i.p. injection of streptozotocin (STZ; 65 mg/kg), 15 min after an i.p. injection of nicotinamide (120 mg/kg). HpE

Acute treatment with extracts of Hypericum perforatum, the common plant usually called St. John's Wort, reduces voluntary ethanol intake in Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring (msP) rats and acts synergistically with opioid receptor antagonists to further attenuate ethanol consumption. The present study evaluated the effect of chronic (once a day for 12 days) intragastric administration of a CO2 Hypericum perforatum extract (HPCO2), given alone or combined with naltrexone (NTX), on ethanol intake offered 2h/day in msP rats. Chronic treatment with HPCO2 markedly reduced ethanol intake at th

The genus Hypericum comprises a large number of species. The flower, leaf, stem, and root of the Hypericum species are widely used in traditional medicine in different cultures. Many Hypericum species have been well investigated phytochemically and pharmacologically. However, only a few reports are available on the H. cordifolium native to Nepal. The present study aims to evaluate the phytochemical composition of different extracts, qualitative analysis of methanol extract of the flower and leaf using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and the antioxidant properties of components by the TLC-DPPH

A 22-year-old man presented with fever and ulceration of the oral mucosa. The patient had pharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis. For the 3 weeks prior to presentation, he had been taking approximately 1000 mg/day of flowering herbs (Hypericum perforatum L, known as St. John's wort) for treatment of depression. A complete blood count on the first day of hospitalization showed agranulocytosis and normocytic anemia. His condition worsened, and he developed progressive dysphagia. A bone marrow biopsy on day 3 revealed bone marrow necrosis. After the diagnosis was established (day 3 of hospitalizat

Extracts from the herb "St. John's wort" (Hypericum perforatum L.) are used for the treatment of mental depression, nervousness, sleeplessness and for their wound healing, diuretic and antirheumatic properties. As one biochemical mechanism for depression lack of catecholamine neurotransmitters has been discussed. The results of this investigation show that alcoholic extracts from Hypericum perforatum L. on the basis of total hypericin content inhibit dopamine-beta-hydroxylase with an IC50 of 0.1 mu mol/l; pure commercial hypericin inhibits with an IC50 of 21 mu mol/l. Ten previously undescribed polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs), hypertums A-J (1-10), together with eighteen known analogues (11-28), belonging to five subclasses of PPAPs, were isolated from the aerial parts of Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John's wort). The chemical structures and the absolute configurations of these compounds were elucidated by comprehensive analysis of NMR spectra, HR-ESI-MS data, quantum chemical calculations, chemical transformation, and X-ray crystallography. The carbon skeletons of compounds 1-5 were first characterized from H. perforatum. Compounds 6

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a serious disease that poses a major threat to human health. Up till now, there is no effective drug on the market that could completely cure AD. In this study, 45 polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol (PPAP) analogs, including 13 new ones, were isolated from Hypericum patulum by LC-MS/MS guided isolation with molecular networking analysis. Architecturally, all isolates consist of 12 cage-like PPAPs, 24 type-A PPAPs, four seco-PPAPs, three spiroType PPAPs, and two adamantane-type PPAPs. Semi-synthesis was applied for the first time to assign the relative and

Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort) is well-established for its antidepressant activity throughout the world and also various other species within this genus are used in different folk medicines. Hyperforin of St. John's wort inhibited growth of cancer cell lines and the use of hypericin (another compound of H. perforatum) in cancer photodynamic therapy is proposed. Therefore, we investigated the anti-cancer properties of H. adenotrichum Spach (Guttiferae), an endemic species in Turkey called 'kantaron', which is used for wound healing and antiseptic effects. Freeze-dried plant was extracte
