Non-contact identification of opportunistic pathogens in mixed biofilm contaminations by hyperspectral imaging.

BACKGROUND: Biofilms are present on almost all surfaces in households, healthcare and medical equipment, foods, industrial and water supply systems, and often contain opportunistic pathogens that represent one of the key public health hazards. The highest risks are imposed by ESKAPEE pathogens, as well as mixed bacterial-fungal communities often exhibiting multiple drug resistance, this way challenging public healthcare. RESULTS: Here we show how recent developments in hyperspectral imaging technology, complemented by advanced image analysis and machine learning methods, create a unique frame

Hyperspectral Imaging of Whole-Cell Region for Differentiating Cervical Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion Cytology.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cytology offers a relatively safe and reliable method for cancer screening, but the tests contain vague grading criteria, such as atypical squamous cells, and cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (ASC-H) and atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). METHODS: To explore distinct differentiation points among ASC-H, high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), and non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and among ASC-US, low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), and negative for intraepithelial lesion or mali

Differentiating solar lentigines from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with hyperspectral imaging: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Solar lentigines and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are common pigmentation disorders, and they are usually differentiated by a trained dermatologist. Accurate identification of the spot type is essential for providing patients with the most appropriate skin treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in characterizing and discriminating solar lentigines from PIH, that is, to identify the colorimetric features and chromophore concentrations associated with each pigmentation disorder. METHODS: Acquisition of HSI was perform

Revisiting biofilm quantification: crystal violet assay and the emerging role of hyperspectral imaging.

Bacterial biofilms are major contributors to persistent and chronic infections. Conventional methods used to quantify biofilms, such as the crystal violet assay, provide only semi-quantitative and non-specific estimates of their biomass. In this study, we highlight hyperspectral imaging (HSI) as a non-destructive approach for biofilm analysis. To address this, stainless steel coupons were developed to support robust biofilm formation. We propose HSI, coupled with machine learning tools, to detect and quantify Acinetobacter baumannii biofilms for potential real-time monitoring. This method has

Integrating AI with Advanced Hyperspectral Imaging for Enhanced Classification of Selected Gastrointestinal Diseases.

Ulcerative colitis, polyps, esophagitis, and other gastrointestinal (GI) diseases significantly impact health, making early detection crucial for reducing mortality rates and improving patient outcomes. Traditional white light imaging (WLI) is commonly used during endoscopy to identify abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract. However, insufficient contrast often limits its effectiveness, making it challenging to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy tissues, particularly when identifying subtle mucosal and vascular abnormalities. These limitations have prompted the need for more advanc

Parameter-based transfer learning for severity classification of atopic dermatitis using hyperspectral imaging.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Because atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes structural changes, there is a growing need for noninvasive research methods to evaluate this condition. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) captures skin structure features by exploiting light wavelength variations in penetration depth. In this study, parameter-based transfer learning was deployed to classify the severity of AD using HSI. Therefore, we aimed to obtain an optimal combination of classification results from the four models after constructing different source- and target-domain dataset

Intraoperative Hyperspectral Imaging Predicts Early Allograft Dysfunction and Overall Survival in Liver Transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the novel application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for in vivo allograft perfusion assessment during liver transplantation (LT) and its potential value for predicting early allograft dysfunction (EAD), graft, and overall survival (OS). BACKGROUND: LT is a well-established therapy for acute and chronic liver diseases, with excellent outcomes. However, a significant proportion of recipients experience EAD, which affects graft and OS. EAD is associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury. HSI is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides information on tissue char

Lightfield hyperspectral imaging in neuro-oncology surgery: an IDEAL 0 and 1 study.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has shown promise in the field of intra-operative imaging and tissue differentiation as it carries the capability to provide real-time information invisible to the naked eye whilst remaining label free. Previous iterations of intra-operative HSI systems have shown limitations, either due to carrying a large footprint limiting ease of use within the confines of a neurosurgical theater environment, having a slow image acquisition time, or by compromising spatial/spectral resolution in favor of improvements to the surgical workflow. Lightfield hyperspectr

Computer-Assisted Differentiation between Colon-Mesocolon and Retroperitoneum Using Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) Technology.

Complete mesocolic excision (CME), which involves the adequate resection of the tumor-bearing colonic segment with "en bloc" removal of its mesocolon along embryological fascial planes is associated with superior oncological outcomes. However, CME presents a higher complication rate compared to non-CME resections due to a higher risk of vascular injury. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a contrast-free optical imaging technology, which facilitates the quantitative imaging of physiological tissue parameters and the visualization of anatomical structures. This study evaluates the accuracy of HSI co

Automatic optical biopsy for colorectal cancer using hyperspectral imaging and artificial neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative identification of cancerous tissue is fundamental during oncological surgical or endoscopic procedures. This relies on visual assessment supported by histopathological evaluation, implying a longer operative time. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a contrast-free and contactless imaging technology, provides spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis, with the potential to differentiate tissue at a cellular level. However, HSI produces "big data", which is impossible to directly interpret by clinicians. We hypothesize that advanced machine learning algorithms (convolutional

Understanding Surface Modifications Induced via Argon Plasma Treatment through Secondary Electron Hyperspectral Imaging.

Understanding the effects that sterilization methods have on the surface of a biomaterial is a prerequisite for clinical deployment. Sterilization causes alterations in a material's surface chemistry and surface structures that can result in significant changes to its cellular response. Here we compare surfaces resulting from the application of the industry standard autoclave sterilisation to that of surfaces resulting from the use of low-pressure Argon glow discharge within a novel gas permeable packaging method in order to explore a potential new biomaterial sterilisation method. Research on spectral reconstruction algorithm for snapshot microlens array micro-hyperspectral imaging system.

Snapshot microlens array microscopic hyperspectral imaging systems do not require a scanning process and obtain (x,y,λ) three-dimensional data cubes in one shot. Currently, the three-dimensional spectra image data are interleaved on a charge-coupled device detector, which increases subsequent data processing difficulty. The optical design software cannot simulate actual engineering installation and adjustment results accurately and the tracking results cannot guide precise rapid online calibration of the snapshot microlens array microscopic hyperspectral imaging system. To solve these problems

Detection of Changes of Ancient Buildings from Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Hyperspectral Imaging.

Ancient buildings have various geometric and material changes caused by the historical and natural factors, and their comprehensive detection has also been a more important challenge. This way, in this paper, a flexible, scientific approach from terrestrial laser scanning and hyperspectral imaging is provided for this issue. It is possible to flexibly and accurately detect some potential crisis, which cannot be found in some surface phenomena of historical buildings. Furthermore, one of the main characteristic of this method is that the time and place of the two data acquisition need not be li

Assessment of diabetic small-fiber neuropathy by using short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging.

Among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the association between hyperspectral imaging (HSI) examination and diabetic neuropathy (DN) is ascertained using HSI of the feet using four types of spectral difference measurements. DN was evaluated by traditional Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), evaluation of painful neuropathy (ID-Pain, DN4) and sudomotor function by measuring electrochemical skin conductance (ESC). Of the 120 T2DM patients and 20 healthy adults enrolled, T2DM patients are categorized into normal sudomotor (ESC >60 μS) and sudomotor dysfunction (ESC ≤ 60

Hyperspectral Raman Imaging Using a Spatial Heterodyne Raman Spectrometer with a Microlens Array.

A new hyperspectral Raman imaging technique is described using a spatial heterodyne Raman spectrometer (SHRS) and a microlens array (MLA). The new technique enables the simultaneous acquisition of Raman spectra over a wide spectral range at spatially isolated locations within two spatial dimensions (x, y) using a single exposure on a charge-coupled device (CCD) or other detector types such as a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) detector. In the SHRS system described here, a 4 × 4 mm MLA with 1600, 100 µm diameter lenslets is used to image the sample, with each lenslet illuminating

Determination of metmyoglobin in cooked tan mutton using Vis/NIR hyperspectral imaging system.

In this study, the ENVI 4.6 software was used to obtain the spectral reflection value of samples. The outlier samples were eliminated by the Monte Carlo method, and then SPXY (sample set partitioning based on be x-y distances) was used to divide the calibration set and prediction set. The spectral images were pretreated and characteristic wavelengths were extracted. The spectral models of full and pretreated spectra and characteristic bands were established by partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principle component regression (PCR), and the optimal modeling combination was selected. Preserving spatial and energy resolution in multi-dimensional hyperspectral image datasets via rigid image registration.

Monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy in advanced scanning transmission electron microscopes has become a powerful tool for probing local electronic and vibrational spectra in many materials. However, acquiring high-quality multi-dimensional hyperspectral image datasets remains challenging due to sample drift, low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and detector artifacts. These limitations often require shorter acquisition times to reduce their influence, which can in turn compromise the spatial and energy resolution of the final results. To overcome these challenges, we develop a new appr
