The Role of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Non-colorectal Peritoneal Surface Malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal carcinomatosis, from a variety of gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies, has been historically challenging to treat and there remains a wide range of biologic aggressiveness in these patients. Malignancies commonly associated with PC include those of colorectal, appendiceal, gastric, ovarian, sarcoma, small intestinal, and primary peritoneal origin among others. Advances in our understanding of this unique disease process have led to significant interest in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) as an emerging treatment

Appendiceal goblet cell carcinomatosis treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is a treatment commonly applied to peritoneal surface disease from low-grade mucinous tumors of the appendix. Some centers have extended this therapy to carcinomatosis from more aggressive malignancies. Therefore, we reviewed our experience with CRS/HIPEC for patients with goblet cell carcinomatosis. METHODS: Patients with carcinomatosis from appendiceal primaries with goblet cell features were identified in a prospectively maintained database of 1198 CRS/HIPEC procedures performed between 1991 and 20

Cytoreductive Surgery Plus Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Arising from Urachus.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare locoregional disease characterized by disseminated intraperitoneal mucinous tumors. However, little is known about PMP from urachal neoplasm as a result of its rarity. METHODS: A total of 9 patients with PMP of urachal origin were treated by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in our institution. All specimens of surgeries were submitted for pathologic examination. Representative slides of tumors and normal urachus were submitted for immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: Four patients were men;

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for gallbladder cancer: a retrospective review.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) often prolongs survival in patients with peritoneal surface disease, yet is generally avoided in patients with peritoneal spread from gallbladder cancer as a result of its aggressive biologic behavior. Therefore, we reviewed our experience with CRS/HIPEC for patients with gallbladder cancer. We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of CRS/HIPEC procedures performed from 1991 to 2013 using a prospectively maintained database of 1069 procedures. Patient and tumor characteristics, morbidity, mortality, and surviva

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in the Management of Ovarian, Fallopian Tube and Peritoneal Carcinomas.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is a leading cause of gynecologic cancer-related deaths. Despite improvements, the 10-year survival rate has remained relatively unchanged in recent years. Disease recurrence occurs in nearly 80% of patients with advanced disease symptoms. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a therapy that targets common sites of OC recurrence with heated chemotherapy during surgery, which promotes either direct cell death, heightened deoxyribonucleic acid damage, or increased tumor susceptibility to chemotherapeutics. Clinical trials utilizing HIPEC have shown promising re

An Organoid Model for the Therapeutic Effect of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Consensus regarding the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for colorectal cancer (CRC) regimen remains elusive. In this study, patient-derived tumor organoids from CRC were utilized as a preclinical model for in vitro drug testing of HIPEC regimens commonly used in clinical practice. This approach was used to facilitate the clinical formulation of HIPEC. METHOD: Tumor tissues and corresponding clinical data were obtained from patients diagnosed with CRC at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. Qualified samples were cultured and passaged. We aimed

The Emerging Role of Cytoreduction and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in Pancreatic Cancer.

Peritoneal spread is a frequent cause of metastasis in both the synchronous and metachronous settings for patients with pancreatic cancer. Recent improvements in systemic chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer may now allow for the careful selection of patients with oligometastatic disease isolated to the peritoneum who may benefit from consolidative cytoreduction and HIPEC.

Iterative Cytoreduction and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Recurrent Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for appendiceal tumors (AT) with mucinous carcinomatosis peritonei (MCP) is common. The evidence favoring iterative procedures (iCRS/HIPEC) is limited, and its benefit is not clear for all patients. METHODS: Retrospective (1998-2020) cohorts of AT patients with MCP recurrence after the first CRS/HIPEC were analyzed. Outcomes were compared within tumor grades between iCRS/HIPEC patients and matched control patients without iCRS/HIPEC using propensity score matching (1:1). Post-recurr

Current clinical practices of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies makes physicians face demanding and new-fangled problems, as there are many uncertain aspects considering the outcomes of affected patients' prognoses. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are associated with favorable long-term outcomes in carefully selected patients with peritoneal metastases (PM). We aim to summarize the current results about the initial malignancies and their peritoneal spreads. The current literature has been scrutinized, and studies between 2016 and 2022 were included wherein long-t
