[Effect of hypertonic-hyperoncotic solution infusion on tissue perfusion during surgical treatment of the abdominal aorta].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Decreasing of arterial flow below the critical level leads to capillary endothelium edema and to further worsening of tissue perfusion. Hypertonic solution infusion provides mild and short plasma osmolality increasing, while colloidal solutions intensify that effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hypertonic-hyperoncotic solution (HH) on the organs perfusion during reconstructive surgical procedure on the abdominal aorta (AA). METHODS: The study included 40 patients submitted to AA reconstruction due to aneurysm or Leriche's syndrome. A clamp was put tr

Qualitative evaluation of the blood-brain barrier after the use of hypertonic saline solution in young rats.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) controls the biochemical environment of the brain with variable permeability when comparing adults to children. Based on the knowledge that there is a greater vulnerability in the BBB of young subjects submitted to biochemical variations in the blood and in the brain, an experimental model was designed to study small volume resuscitation. Young Wistar rats were submitted to hemorrhage and resuscitated with 7.5% NaCl solution before undergoing a qualitative evaluation of their BBB. Thirty male rats were anesthetized and divided into four groups: Group 1 - submitted

EFFICACY OF NASAL IRRIGATION WITH ISOTONIC AND HYPERTONIC SOLUTIONS AFTER ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY FOR CHRONIC RHINOSINUSITIS WITH NASAL POLYPOSIS.

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is often involved in the treatment of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Nasal irrigation after ESS is recommended to improve healing and nasal symptoms in these patients. This study compared the efficacy of nasal irrigation with either an isotonic solution of 0.9% NaCl or a hypertonic solution of 2.3% NaCl comprising algal extracts. This was a randomized cohort study that included patients with CRSwNP after ESS who used isotonic solution and hypertonic 2.3% solution enriched with algal extracts (Undaria pinnatifida and Spir- ulin

Treatment of hemorrhagic hypotension with hypertonic/hyperoncotic solutions: effects on regional cerebral blood flow and brain surface oxygen tension.

Hypertonic/hyperoncotic solutions (e.g. HHS: 7.2% NaCl/10% dextran-60) are highly effective to normalize cardiovascular function in hemorrhagic shock due to rapid mobilization of fluid from the extravascular compartment. Since experiences are limited with regard to potential side effects of this treatment on the central nervous system, the present studies were carried out under particular consideration of the cerebral blood flow and O2 supply. HHS was administered in albino rabbits subjected to alpha-chloralose anesthesia and artificial ventilation with and without hemorrhagic hypovolemia. Hem

Alterations in Metabolic Status and Headshaking Behavior Following Intravenous Administration of Hypertonic Solutions in Horses with Trigeminal-Mediated Headshaking.

Trigeminal-nerve-mediated headshaking represents a major welfare challenge for owners and veterinarians and is caused by a low threshold firing of the trigeminal nerve resulting in pain manifested as violent head jerking that often terminates the horse’s career and life due to poor quality of life and suffering. As metabolic changes such as acid⁻base status and electrolytes play a role in nerve firing, this study sought to assess the effects following administration of hypertonic solutions on headshaking behavior in affected horses. This prospective randomized controlled crossover design

Comparison of the protoscolocidal effectiveness of hypertonic saline, povidone-iodine and albendazole solutions in an experimental lung hydatid cyst model.

Secondary hydatidosis is an important problem encountered during the surgical treatment of hydatid cysts. This study describes an experimental model of secondary hydatidosis by cyst inoculation, used to explore whether simultaneous inoculation of protoscolocidal agents could prevent secondary hydatidosis. Fertile cyst fluid was injected into the pleural space of rabbits alone (group 1, n = 8), and in combination with 2% albendazole solution (group 2, n = 8), 20% hypertonic saline (group 3, n = 8) or 10% povidone-iodine (group 4, n = 8). Use of a Novel Buffered Hypertonic Saline Solution for Fluid Replacement and Resuscitation During Spinal Surgery in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: During major orthopedic procedures, such as posterior spinal fusion (PSF), isotonic fluids, colloids, starches, or gelatins are commonly used to replace the preoperative fluid deficit and provide ongoing fluid resuscitation. Given recent concerns regarding the potential adverse physiologic effects of albumin solutions, we have modified our intraoperative practice to include the use of a novel 2% buffered hypertonic saline solution during major orthopedic procedures. We present our preliminary clinical experience with this novel fluid for intraoperative resuscitation and its impact

Small volume resuscitation with hypertonic sodium chloride solution in cattle undergoing surgical correction of abomasal volvulus.

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of rapid intravenous (IV) infusion of a 7.2% hypertonic saline solution with that of continuous application of an isotonic solution in stabilizing the circulation of cows with abomasal volvulus. Cattle treated with hypertonic saline had a significantly greater reduction in volume deficit within the first 10 min of therapy than cows treated with isotonic saline (from 5.9 ± 4.8 to 2.1 ± 4.4 L/100 kg vs. 7.0 ± 4.5 to 4.9 ± 3.8 L/100 kg, respectively). The central venous pressure (CVP) of the cows given the hypertonic saline rose wi

Evaluation of hemostatic analytes after use of hypertonic saline solution combined with colloids for resuscitation of dogs with hypovolemia.

The effects of hypertonic saline solution (HTSS) combined with colloids on hemostatic analytes were studied in 15 dogs. The analytes evaluated included platelet counts, one-stage prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, von Willebrand's factor antigen (vWf:Ag), and buccal mucosa bleeding times. The dogs were anesthetized, and jugular phlebotomy was used to induced hypovolemia (mean arterial blood pressure = 50 mm of Hg). Treatment dogs (n = 12) were resuscitated by infusion (6 ml/kg of body weight) of 1 of 3 solutions: HTSS combined with 6% dextran 70, 6% hetastarch, or 10% pen

[Therapy of hemorrhagic shock using small volumes of hypertonic-hyperoncotic NaCl-dextran solution--effects on the brain].

Infusion of small volumes of hypertonic/hyperoncotic solution (HHL: 7.2% NaCl/10% dextran 60) is highly effective in haemorrhagic shock. Cardiovascular function is restored in a matter of minutes by rapid mobilisation of extravasal fluid. However, little experience has been collected to date on the side effects on the brain by this new form of shock therapy. The present studies on HHL were conducted with particular reference to cerebral blood flow, cerebral oxygen supply, and intracranial pressure. Haemorrhagic shock with a drop in arterial blood pressure to 40 mmHg over a period of 30 min was

[Induction of second trimester abortion by infusion of intraamniotic hypertonic and extraamniotic physiological saline solution (author's transl)].

In a group of 84 women in the second trimester of pregnancy abortion was induced by intramniotic transabdominal instillation of 20 per cent NaCl. In a second group of 91 women the abortion was induced by means of extraamniotic physiological infusion of saline solution. The only complication observed in the first group was an increasing fever. In the second group there were better results. The fetus abortion was complete and in a shorter time. We assume that the new method is the method of choice because it gives no complications and may be easily performed. It may be used also in cases of miss
