Respective potencies of Botox and Dysport in a human skin model: a randomized, double-blind study.

Mouse units used to quantify the activity of botulinum A toxin preparations are not equivalent and issues concerning efficacy and safety remain with regard to their respective potencies and diffusion qualities in human tissue. We compared the effects of Botox (BOT) and Dysport (DYS) in different doses and dilutions in a human skin model. Eighteen (8 women, 10 men) healthy volunteers, aged 28.4 years +/- 5.7 years were injected intradermally with pure saline, BOT and DYS at 16 points in the abdomen in random order and in a double-blind condition, using two conversion ratios (1:3 and 1:4) and th

Fabry disease: enzyme replacement therapy.

Fabry disease is a multisystem disorder associated with wide variability in clinical expression. Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. The enzyme defect leads to the systemic accumulation of glycosphingolipids with alpha-galactosyl moieties consisting predominantly of globotriaosylceramide, galabiosylceramide and two additional glycosphingolipids. Four hemizygotes patients with a family history of Fabry disease and deficiency of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A were selected. Each patient received purified alpha-galactosidase b

[Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome. Therapeutic case review].

The Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome, or anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, presents three principal signs: anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and anodontia or hypodontia. This syndrome is of particular interest to stomatologists and orthodontists because of the particular therapeutic problems raised by the anodontia and associated skeletal anomalies. A case is reported in which the principal clinical sign was anodontia, and the various therapeutic options currently available are discussed.

[Sclero-atrophic keratodermal genodermatosis of the extremities (sclerotylosis) (author's transl)].

The authors report a new case of sclero-atrophic keratodermal genodermatosis of the extremities, which is frequently degenerative. This condition, described by Huriez et al. in 1967, is characterized by symmetric lesions of the hands and feet, sclerodactyly, keratodermia, onychopathy and hypohidrosis. This disease, which is of dominant autosomal transmission, is associated with the MNSs trait, the two genes being probably located on chromosome No. 2.

Ectodermal dysplasia with acanthosis nigricans (Lelis syndrome).

A 31-year-old male patient with ectodermal dysplasia and acanthosis nigricans is described. Clinical findings included hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, nail dystrophy, early onset loss of permanent dentition, mental retardation, and acanthosis nigricans. The findings suggest the diagnosis of Lelis syndrome, as described on the basis of seven unrelated cases. A review concerning this condition is also presented.

Autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia.

Seven cases of a peculiar autosomal recessive ectodermal dysplasia as a distinct nosologic entity are presented. The main symptoms of this rare, not fully delineated syndrome, are hypohidrosis, xeroderma, hypotrichosis, dystrophy of the teeth, benign acanthosis nigricans, and furrowed tongue. Other symptoms can include mental retardation, nail dystrophy, disturbances of skin pigmentation (perioral and periorbital hyperpigmentation, vitiligo, and perinevic leukoderma), and palmoplantar keratosis.

Biology of sweat glands and their disorders. II. Disorders of sweat gland function.

Part I of this article (J Am Acad Dermatol 1989; 20:537-63) focused on normal sweat gland function. Part II provides a discussion of hyperhidrosis and hypohidrosis. Hyperhidrotic disorders affect the palms and soles and the axillae and are associated with previous spinal cord injuries, peripheral neuropathies, brain lesions, intrathoracic neoplasms, systemic illness, and gustatory sweating. Hypohidrotic disorders include anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hereditary sensory neuropathy, Holmes-Adie syndrome, and generalized anhidrosis.

[Syndromes 17. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

The X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. Sebaceous and salivary glands ar also affected. Recognition of the syndrome usually comes from affected man, although female carriers may show symptoms. Dental treatment is complicated and should be coordinated by a dentist in a centre for special dental care. Cooperation with an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is advocated.

From childhood to adulthood: oral rehabilitation of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia, in all its varieties, occurs in approximately 1 in every 100,000 live births. Depending on the variety, hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, hypodontia, oligodontia, and/or anodontia may be exhibited. Few long-term clinical reports exist. This report follows the development, growth, and initial treatment of a 10-year-old patient with ectodermal dysplasia and his subsequent oral rehabilitation 20 years later.

Follicular atrophoderma and basal cell carcinomas: the Bazex syndrome.

Seven members of one family had rare, inherited syndrome of follicular atrophoderma, basal cell carcinomas, and localized anhidrosis. Associated findings in some subjectes were generalized hypohidrosis and "eczema" involving the face shortly after birth. This syndrome shows dominant inheritance, possible x-linked. Follicular atrophoderma is an important skin manifestation, as it has been associated in all reported cases with other systemic or cutaneous abnormalities.

Gene Mutations of the Three Ectodysplasin Pathway Key Players (EDA, EDAR, and EDARADD) Account for More than 60% of Egyptian Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Report of Seven Novel Mutations.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a diverse group of genetic disorders caused by congenital defects of two or more ectodermal-derived body structures, namely, hair, teeth, nails, and some glands, e.g., sweat glands. Molecular pathogenesis of ED involves mutations of genes encoding key proteins of major developmental pathways, including ectodysplasin (EDA) and wingless-type (WNT) pathways. The most common ED phenotype is hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) featuring hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis/anhidrosis, and hypodontia. Molecular diagnosis is fundamental for disease management and em

Kindler syndrome with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis and blonde hair.

Kindler syndrome (KS) is a very rare genodermatosis characterized by acral blistering starting in infancy along with photosensitivity, progressive poikiloderma, cutaneous atrophy, and a variable degree of mucosal involvement. A large number of other cutaneous and extracutaneous features have been described, which aid in diagnosing it. Generally KS has been found to be associated with hypohidrosis/anhidrosis. We herein present a rare case of KS with unique features.

Ross' syndrome (tonic pupil plus).

Two cases of tonic pupil, hyporeflexia, and segmental hypohidrosis (Ross' syndrome) are reported. The relationship of this syndrome to other autonomic dysfunction is discussed. Those symptoms (emotional instability, loss of sweating, orthostatic hypotensive symptoms, and signs of bilaterality of the tonic pupil) which should alert the clinician to more extensive disease states are noted. It is suggested that these conditions may represent a continuum or spectrum of disorders with a widespread degree of severity and progression.

Genetic analysis and prenatal diagnosis in a Chinese with growth retardation, abnormal liver function, and microcephaly.

BACKGROUND: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders caused by defects in the synthesis and processing of glycoproteins. COG6-CDG is a kind of disorder caused by conserved oligomeric golgi complex 6 (COG6) deficiency. To date, only 19 patients with COG6-CDG have been reported. METHODS: We report a girl in a Chinese family with developmental delay, growth retardation, microcephaly, abnormal liver function, and hypohidrosis. Trio whole-exome sequencing was performed for this patient and her parents, and the variants identified were validated

Hereditary hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: report of a rare case.

Hereditary Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (HHED), an X-linked, recessive, Mendelian character, is seen usually in males and it is inherited through female carriers. It is characterised by congenital dysplasia of one or more ectodermal structures and it is manifested by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. It results from abnormal morphogenesis of cutaneous and oral embryonic ectoderm. Here, we are presenting a rare case of HHED in a 19 year female with classic features of this condition.
