PURPOSE: Hypothyroidism is a relatively common endocrine disorder and is well documented to be associated with lipid abnormalities.
METHODS: A narrative review was conducted of studies describing the alterations in the lipid profile accompanying both subclinical and overt hypothyroidism.
RESULTS: Lipid abnormalities are seen with TSH values in the upper end of the accepted reference range, as well as with subclinical and overt hypothyroidism. The degree of lipid derangement is generally proportional to the degree of TSH elevation. Other factors such as age, sex, and body mass index can also

Clinical hypothyroidism affects one in 300 people in the United States, with a higher prevalence among female and older patients. Symptoms range from minimal to life-threatening (myxedema coma); more common symptoms include cold intolerance, fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, and voice changes. The signs and symptoms that suggest thyroid dysfunction are nonspecific and nondiagnostic, especially early in disease presentation; therefore, a diagnosis is based on blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxine. There is no evidence that population screening is beneficial.

Hypothyroidism has been associated with quetiapine, but the underlying mechanism is not well understood and has been presumed to result from thyroid gland dysfunction (primary hypothyroidism). We present a case of symptomatic quetiapine-induced hypothyroidism due to hypothalamic/pituitary gland dysfunction (central [secondary] hypothyroidism).

INTRODUCTION: Extrathyroidal abnormality incidence and especially the incidence of congenital cardiac disease are increased with congenital hypothyroidism. In this present study, it is aimed to evaluate patients who were being followed up for congenital hypothyroidism for accompanying diseases, and to compare impacts of accompanying diseases on prognosis under the light of published articles in the literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 400 cases which were diagnosed with, treated and followed up for congenital hypothyroidism in our clinic were retrospectively evaluated. Cases with comp

AIM: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and hypothyroidism are well established forerunners of atherogenic cardiovascular disease. Considerable overlap occurs in the pathogenic mechanisms of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by metabolic syndrome and hypothyroidism. Insulin resistance has been studied as the basic pathogenic mechanism in metabolic syndrome.[1] This cross sectional study intended to assess thyroid function in patients with metabolic syndrome and to investigate the association between hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients with metabolic

Overt hypothyroidism predisposes to the development of atherosclerosis. Recent data indicate that subclinical hypothyroidism is also associated with enhanced risk for arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, which could be attributed to multiple mechanisms such as hyperlipidemia, hypercoagulable state, direct effects on vascular smooth muscle or endothelial dysfunction. The relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and atherosclerosis is, however, still ambiguous. The elucidation of this problem is important as subclinical hypothyroidism is a relatively common condition, and if necessary

Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder with characteristic clinical symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms of hypothyroidism are lethargy, cold intolerance, slowing of intellectual and motor activity, decreased appetite, weight gain, and dry skin. A 39-year-old female presented to the clinic with dysarthria as the chief symptom. Subsequent questions revealed that other symptoms were confined to the otolaryngeal region, which were episodes of mild dysphonia, dysphagia, sleep apnea, and snoring. Laboratory data revealed marked hypothyroidism and positive tests for antithyroglobulin and anti

OBJECTIVE: To review the screening program for congenital hypothyroidism in the Riyadh Al-Kharj Hospital Programme, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to investigate the clinical and biochemical characteristics of affected infants.
METHODS: The study was carried out from 1985 to 2000 in the Clinical Chemistry Division, Department of Pathology, Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Laboratory data and case notes of infants diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism were used to supply the relevant data and information.
RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-one thousand, four hundre

Hypothyroidism affects 4% to 10% of women, increasing with age. Symptoms, which are often nonspecific and subtle, can include: lethargy, mild weight gain, edema, cold intolerance, constipation, mental impairment, dry skin, depression, irregular menses, hoarseness, myalgias, hyperlipidemia, and bradycardia. TSH determination is usually warranted when some of these are present. Confirmation of diagnosis is based on laboratory tests, not symptoms. With Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause, the thyroid is usually firm and irregular to palpation. Screening is recommended by the American T

The aim of the study is to present results of the olfactory testing in congenital hypothyroidism in the group of 20 subjects. The etiology of hypothyroidism included: Pendred's syndrome in 2 cases, hypoplasia in 2 cases, athyreosis in 5 cases and ectopy of thyroid gland in 11 cases. Olfactory testing involved olfactometry by Elsberg-Levy modified by Pruszewicz for 4 odorants: coffee, lemon, mint and anise; smell fatigability test by Pruszewicz et al. for lemon. Level of plasma TSH was determined in each subject. Age of the subjects, at which hormonal replacement therapy was started and regular

Most patients with subclinical hypothyroidism are asymptomatic; however, when this disorder is associated with alterations of the lactotroph, clinical and biochemical manifestations are evident, along with involvement of the gonadotrophic function. In this report, we selected 11 women with hypothyroidism, 5 of them in stage I and 6 in stage II. In all of them, the thyroid function was altered while the most affected was the gonadal axis. The available literature on this subject is scarce, so that we propose a systematic investigation in order to exclude other associated disorders.

Female patients with mild clinical symptoms signs of hypothyroidism may be overwhelmed by the accompanying manifestations of hyperprolactinaemia. Radiological imaging may show enlargement of the pituitary gland. In these cases a primary diagnosis of hypothyroidism may not be considered. Long-term bromocriptine mesylate treatment or surgery can be avoided if the diagnosis is considered and the thyroid function test performed.

Hypothyroidism is a commonly diagnosed endocrine disorder. Typical signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism include lethargy, cold intolerance, hoarseness, dry skin, constipation, delayed relaxation phase of deep tendon reflexes, and bradycardia. Hypothyroidism, presenting with such classic manifestations, usually is readily recognized and, therefore, easy to diagnose. Occasionally patients have less commonly emphasized symptoms, making the diagnosis less apparent. Such atypical presentations may suggest other diseases as the primary problem and, therefore, the initial focus of attention is on a d

This study prospective without any selection bias included 80 of the 152 hypothyroid infants and children seen over the past six years. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by TSH and thyroid hormone (T3, T4) studies. Scanning for thyroid with TC99m pertechnetate was carried out in all except seven older children with grade II and III goiters where 131I uptake studies were done. Serum thyroglobulin (RIA) was estimated and antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies were tested. Based on thyroid 131I scan or 131I uptake, 52.5% had no demonstrable thyroid tissue except one with hypoplasia (G
