During 1998-2002, the STD/HIV Prevention and Care Program of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) recorded 1,582 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis, the most of any U.S. city. Although case numbers and overall rates remained stable in Chicago during this period, patterns of transmission changed substantially. Throughout most of the 1990s, P&S syphilis was reported almost exclusively among heterosexuals. We investigated an outbreak of leptospirosis among athletes and community residents after a triathlon was held in Springfield, Illinois. A telephone survey was conducted to collect clinical information and data on possible risk factors, community surveillance was established, and animal specimens and lake water samples were collected to determine the source of the leptospiral contamination. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes changes in distance travelled by Illinois youth ages 5-17 between 2016 and 2024 for mental health hospitalizations at Illinois hospitals.
METHODS: We obtained records for admissions with a mental health principal diagnosis in each year. Patient and hospital zip codes were used to estimate distance. We present bivariate and multivariable analyses of change in distance between years by patient and hospital characteristics.

Infestation by immature Ixodes dammini and infection by Borrelia burgdorferi of the white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus were studied in Castle Rock State Park in northwestern Illinois during June-October 1990. Prevalence and intensity of infestation of larvae on mice were highest in August with a smaller peak in early June. The distribution of larvae on mice was highly aggregated during each of the sampling periods. Neonicotinoids have become widely used pesticides due to their specificity for insects. We explored how these contaminants are distributed on protected lands within Illinois. We hypothesized that there would be lower insect biomass at sites with higher neonicotinoid concentrations which we expected to occur at sites with a higher surrounding proportion of agriculture.
