Medical Referring Image Segmentation via Next-Token Mask Prediction.

Medical Referring Image Segmentation (MRIS) involves segmenting target regions in medical images based on natural language descriptions. While achieving promising results, recent approaches usually involve complex design of multimodal fusion or multi-stage decoders. In this work, we propose NTP-MRISeg, a novel framework that reformulates MRIS as an autoregressive next-token prediction task over a unified multimodal sequence of tokenized image, text, and mask representations. This formulation streamlines model design by eliminating the need for modality-specific fusion and external segmentation

Domain-agnostic weakly supervised surgical instrument segmentation.

Recent advancements in visual foundation models open new avenues in the field of surgical instrument segmentation in medical images. Segmentation foundation models provide high segmentation accuracy for objects of interest that are selected via prompts in the form of points, bounding boxes, or text. However, the choice of suitable prompts either requires manual interaction or relies on two-stage pipelines based on supervised, typically domain-specific models. This limits their applicability for domain-agnostic surgical instrument segmentation. We propose a method for surgical instrument segmen

The application of generative neural radiance fields in medical imaging: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Generative neural radiance fields (GNeRF) extend NeRF with adversarial, variational, and pose-aware techniques, enabling 3D reconstructions from sparse 2D medical images. While NeRF reviews exist, no prior synthesis has focused specifically on GNeRF in medical imaging. PURPOSE: This systematic review evaluates the application of GNeRF in medical imaging, summarizing models, modalities, outcomes, and methodological gaps. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched major scientific databases and digital libraries for studies published between January 2021 and April 2025.

Exploring the redundancy of Radon transform using a set of partial derivative equations: could we precisely reconstruct the image from a sparse-view projection without any image prior?

In this study, we propose a universalnth order partial differential equation (PDE) of 2D Radon transform to disclose the correlation of Radon transform among neighboring integration line. Specifically, a CT geometry of dual centers of rotation is introduced to formulate an object independent PDE that presents the local correlation of Radon transform on the variables of distance and angle, named LCE (local correlation equation). The LCE is directly available to divergent beam CT geometries, e.g. fan beam CT or cone beam CT. In this case, one rotation center is set at the focal spot, so that the

Distillation-SAM: Knowledge Distillation-Based Auto-Prompt Embedding Learning for Surgical Image Segmentation.

Surgical image segmentation is vital for various stages of surgical procedures, from preoperative planning to real-time navigation and postoperative assessment. Despite advances in deep learning, current surgical image segmentation methods remain limited. They primarily target instrument segmentation and show poor generalizability across different surgical settings. While the Segment Anything Model (SAM) shows robust generalization capabilities in the segmentation of natural images, adapting SAM to surgical and medical images faces challenges because of its reliance on high-quality user-provid

Instrument-Tissue Interaction Detection Framework for Surgical Video Understanding.

Instrument-tissue interaction detection task, which helps understand surgical activities, is vital for constructing computer-assisted surgery systems but with many challenges. Firstly, most models represent instrument-tissue interaction in a coarse-grained way which only focuses on classification and lacks the ability to automatically detect instruments and tissues. Secondly, existing works do not fully consider relations between intra- and inter-frame of instruments and tissues. In the paper, we propose to represent instrument-tissue interaction as 〈 instrument class, instrument bounding box,

Transmissive liquid-crystal device for correcting primary coma aberration and astigmatism in biospecimen in two-photon excitation laser scanning microscopy.

All aberrations produced inside a biospecimen can degrade the quality of a three-dimensional image in two-photon excitation laser scanning microscopy. Previously, we developed a transmissive liquid-crystal device to correct spherical aberrations that improved the image quality of a fixed-mouse-brain slice treated with an optical clearing reagent. In this study, we developed a transmissive device that corrects primary coma aberration and astigmatism. The motivation for this study is that asymmetric aberration can be induced by the shape of a biospecimen and/or by a complicated refractive-index

Deep label fusion: A generalizable hybrid multi-atlas and deep convolutional neural network for medical image segmentation.

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) achieve very high accuracy in segmenting various anatomical structures in medical images but often suffer from relatively poor generalizability. Multi-atlas segmentation (MAS), while less accurate than DCNN in many applications, tends to generalize well to unseen datasets with different characteristics from the training dataset. Several groups have attempted to integrate the power of DCNN to learn complex data representations and the robustness of MAS to changes in image characteristics. However, these studies primarily focused on replacing individual

Development a computer-aided diagnosis system for dental caries detection applying radiographic images.

Delayed diagnosis of certain diseases like dental caries frequently leads to intensified problems due to postponed treatment. Untreated cavities can progress and affect a deeper layers of the tooth, which result in discomfort, infection, and ultimately tooth loss. Presently, manual diagnosis of dental decay in radiographic images by dentists in most dental clinics is prone to errors due to factors such as fatigue and information overload, emphasizing the necessity for automated diagnostic tools. This study develops an intelligent computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for accurate and efficient

Deformable image registration for composite planned doses during adaptive radiation therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Some patients have significant anatomic changes during radiotherapy, necessitating an adaptive repeat CT-simulation and re-planning. This yields two unique planning datasets that introduce uncertainty into total dose records. This study explored the impact of using deformable image registration (DIR) to spatially align repeat CT-simulation images and calculate total planned dose distributions. MATERIALS & METHODS: Data from 5 head-and-neck, 5 lung, and 5 sarcoma patients who had unanticipated re-planning during radiotherapy were analyzed in a treatment planning system (RayStatio

Kurtosis Transformation for Multi-Source Domain Generalization Segmentation of OCT Images From Multi-Manufacturers' Devices.

OBJECTIVE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images can visualize retinal layers and fundus lesions. Retinal structure segmentation is of great significance in early lesion detection and treatment guidance. However, devices from different OCT manufacturers are largely different from each other, which often leads to degraded results in image segmentation. METHODS: To enrich the diversity of multi-source domains in intensity distributions and image contrasts of multi-manufacturers' OCT images, a kurtosis transformation method is proposed to generate a kurtosis-transformed image. Dual Cross-Image Semantic Consistency With Self-Aware Pseudo Labeling for Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation.

Semi-supervised learning has proven highly effective in tackling the challenge of limited labeled training data in medical image segmentation. In general, current approaches, which rely on intra-image pixel-wise consistency training via pseudo-labeling, overlook the consistency at more comprehensive semantic levels (e.g., object region) and suffer from severe discrepancy of extracted features resulting from an imbalanced number of labeled and unlabeled data. To overcome these limitations, we present a new Dual Cross-image Semantic Consistency (DuCiSC) learning framework, for semi-supervised me

WNet: A study of a class-waveform attention-enabled deep learning method and its application to medical image segmentation.

Colorectal cancer is a common and fatal malignant tumor that has a high prevalence in both men and women. For this disease, early detection of the problem area is crucial. However, colorectal cancer usually has complex structures and textures and may contain irregular shapes, color variations, and blurred edges, making it difficult for the model to learn features accurately. To alleviate these problems, this study investigates the design of a class-waveform attention mechanism and utilizes this attention to guide the medical image segmentation model proposed in this study, which effectively al

From slides to AI-ready maps: Standardized multi-layer tissue maps as metadata for artificial intelligence in digital pathology.

A Whole Slide Image (WSI) is a high-resolution digital image created by scanning an entire glass slide containing a biological specimen, such as tissue sections or cell samples, at multiple magnifications. These images are digitally viewable, analyzable, and shareable, and are widely used for Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm development. WSIs play an important role in pathology for disease diagnosis and oncology for cancer research, but are also applied in neurology, veterinary medicine, hematology, microbiology, dermatology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, and forensic science. SLDPC: Slide-Level Dual-Prompt Collaboration for few-shot whole slide image classification.

Digital pathology standardizes diagnostic workflows through the digitization of conventional slides and the integration of algorithmic analysis. Few-shot Weakly Supervised Whole Slide Image (WSI) Classification (FSWC) represents a critical challenge in digital pathology. Conventional Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) methods rely on large volumes of annotated data and are susceptible to distribution shifts. Vision-Language Model (VLM)-based prompt learning methods enable parameter-efficient few-shot learning but are limited to patch-level feature aggregation, failing to model slide-level diagno

DPFR: Semi-supervised gland segmentation via density perturbation and feature recalibration.

In recent years, semi-supervised methods have attracted considerable attention in gland segmentation of histopathological images, as they can substantially reduce the annotation data burden for pathologists. The most widely adopted approach is the Mean-Teacher framework based on consistency regularization, which exploits unlabeled data information through consistency regularization constraints. However, due to the morphological complexity of glands in histopathological images, existing methods still suffer from confusion between glands and background, as well as gland adhesion. To address thes

Deblurring masked image modeling for ultrasound image analysis.

Recently, large pretrained vision foundation models based on masked image modeling (MIM) have attracted unprecedented attention and achieved remarkable performance across various tasks. However, the study of MIM for ultrasound imaging remains relatively unexplored, and most importantly, current MIM approaches fail to account for the gap between natural images and ultrasound, as well as the intrinsic imaging characteristics of the ultrasound modality, such as the high noise-to-signal ratio. In this paper, motivated by the unique high noise-to-signal ratio property in ultrasound, we propose a de

CCS-Net: Cascade Detection Network With the Convolution Kernel Switch Block and Statistics Optimal Anchors Block in Hypopharyngeal Cancer MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a common diagnostic method for hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC). It is a challenge to automatically detect HPC tumors and swollen lymph nodes (HPC risk areas) from MRI slices because of the small size and irregular shape of HPC risk areas. Herein, we propose a cascade detection network with Convolution Kernel Switch (CKS) Block and Statistics Optimal Anchors (SOA) Block in HPC MRI (CCS-Net).
