[Research progress on imagine diagnosis of limbal stem cell deficiency].

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is an ocular surface disease resulting from a reduction and/or dysfunction of limbal stem cells. The symptoms of LSCD are non-specific and can be difficult to distinguish from other ocular surface diseases through slit-lamp examination. Impression cytology is currently considered the gold standard for LSCD diagnosis; however,it is a qualitative method with low sensitivity. Nonetheless, emerging imaging techniques offer quantitative diagnosis and staging of LSCD. This review article examines four imaging methods and their associated parameters for diagnosing LS

No Evidence for Neural Overlap between Unconsciously Processed and Imagined Stimuli.

Visual representations can be generated via feedforward or feedback processes. The extent to which these processes result in overlapping representations remains unclear. Previous work has shown that imagined stimuli elicit similar representations as perceived stimuli throughout the visual cortex. However, while representations during imagery are indeed only caused by feedback processing, neural processing during perception is an interplay of both feedforward and feedback processing. This means that any representational overlap could be because of overlap in feedback processes. In the current s

Trauma-focused imaginal exposure for auditory hallucinations: A case series.

OBJECTIVE: There is mounting evidence that traumatic life events play a role in auditory hallucinations (AH). Theory suggests that some AH are decontextualized trauma memory intrusions. Exposure-based trauma-focused therapies that target trauma memory intrusions may therefore be a promising new treatment. We aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a standard protocol trauma-focused imaginal exposure intervention for trauma-related AH and to provide initial proof of concept regarding potential effects on AH. DESIGN: We conducted a single-arm case series of a six session (90 min pe

After polio: Imagining, planning, and delivering a world beyond eradication.

As the world comes closer to the eradication of polio, the question of preparing for life after this debilitating disease becomes increasingly pertinent. This paper focuses on on-going institutional attempts to conceptualise, plan, and deliver a world after polio. Drawing upon interviews with global health officials and ethnographic fieldwork with eradication initiatives in Nigeria and Pakistan, I explore how international donors are transitioning towards life after the disease and the curtailment of the substantial resources it has successfully mobilised. Focusing specifically on the wind-dow

Cataract Surgery From 1918 to the Present and Future-Just Imagine!

PURPOSE: To review the history of cataract surgery over the past 100 years, and to offer predictions about new developments that may occur during the next 50 years. DESIGN: Interpretive essay. METHODS: Review of historical literature and author experiences pertaining to cataract surgery, with commentary and perspective. RESULTS: By this time, cataract surgery has advanced to the point that Kelman's introduction of phacoemulsification and use of intraocular lenses (IOLs), both very controversial when initially introduced, have become state of the art. Imagining triadic interactions simultaneously activates mirror and mentalizing systems.

Coordinated triadic interactions, involving oneself, another person, and an external object, are considered a uniquely human skill. However, the exact mechanisms underlying the ability to engage in such social interactions remain hitherto unknown. We used functional neuroimaging to investigate the neural signature of triadic interactions. For this purpose, participants viewed pictures of objects in a 3T functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner and were asked whether they could imagine this object in a social interaction with another person. We also aimed to dissociate this process from, a

Petrosal ganglion: a more complex role than originally imagined.

The petrosal ganglion (PG) is a peripheral sensory ganglion, composed of pseudomonopolar sensory neurons that innervate the posterior third of the tongue and the carotid sinus and body. According to their electrical properties PG neurons can be ascribed to one of two categories: (i) neurons with action potentials presenting an inflection (hump) on its repolarizing phase and (ii) neurons with fast and brisk action potentials. Although there is some correlation between the electrophysiological properties and the sensory modality of the neurons in some species, no general pattern can be easily re

Sleep experiences, dissociation, imaginal experiences, and schizotypy: the role of context.

Watson (2001) reported moderate correlations between the Iowa Sleep Experience Survey (ISES) and self-report measures of dissociation and schizotypy. Subsequent investigations (Fassler, Knox, & Lynn, 2003; Watson, 2003) reported similar, although somewhat more modest, correlations between the ISES and measures of dissociation and schizotypy, as well as with measures of absorption and negative affect. The present study tested subjects in conditions in which the measures of sleep experiences were administered with other measures in either the same (N=86) or a different (N=87) test context. We de

[Tuberculosis: steady dynamics between past and present to imagine the future].

Progress in understanding the biological processes that allow Mycobacterium tuberculosis to be a successful parasite have accelerated in the last twenty years. This progress has been stimulated by the return of tuberculosis (TB) as an important disease in industrialized countries, by its increase in emergent nations in the tail of population increases and poverty and by the spread of multiple drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) M. tuberculosis as a result of treatment failures. Progress on M. tuberculosis biology has also been fueled by advances in microbiology and molecu

Memory for perceived and imagined pictures--an event-related potential study.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioural measures were used to investigate recognition memory and source-monitoring judgements about previously perceived and imagined pictures. At study, word labels of common objects were presented. Half of these were followed by a corresponding picture and the other half by an empty frame, signalling to the participants to mentally visualise an image. At test, participants in a source-monitoring task made a three-way discrimination between new words and words corresponding to previously perceived and imagined pictures. Participants in an old/new-recogn

Myogenic failure in posterior urethral valve disease: real or imagined?

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that hypocontractility or myogenic failure develops in older boys with a history of 9 posterior urethral valved as the hyperactive, poorly compliant bladders decompensate with age. Also a much higher prevalence of myogenic failure has been reported than we have observed. We determine the prevalence of myogenic failure in boys with a posterior urethral valve and whether myogenic failure was a consequence of earlier detrusor instability or diminished compliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the urodynamic findings of 51 boys after transurethr

Hypnotizability-related cerebral oxygenation during actual and imagined movements.

EEG studies revealed different information processing in participants with high hypnotizability scores (highs), who exhibit scarcely localized task-related EEG changes, and low hypnotizables (lows), who display specifically network-related changes. The study aimed to confirm those findings using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). NIRS was applied to 10 highs and 9 lows (according to the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: A) during actual (M) and imagined (MI) sequential movements of the left arm and hand. The ability to be deeply absorbed in tasks and to vividly imagine through the visual

Imagined speech classification exploiting EEG power spectrum features.

Imagined speech recognition has developed as a significant topic of research in the field of brain-computer interfaces. This innovative technique has great promise as a communication tool, providing essential help to those with impairments. An imagined speech recognition model is proposed in this paper to identify the ten most frequently used English alphabets (e.g., A, D, E, H, I, N, O, R, S, T) and numerals (e.g., 0 to 9). A novel electroencephalogram (EEG) dataset was created by measuring the brain activity of 30 people while they imagined these alphabets and digits. As part of signal prepr

Written Imaginal Exposure for Hoarding Disorder: A Preliminary Pilot Study.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is marked by difficulty discarding possessions. Many refuse treatment or drop out, which may be due to treatment's incorporation of in-home decluttering, which is feared and avoided. Thus, strategies to prepare patients for decluttering/discarding are needed. Imaginal exposure (IE), or imagining one's worst fears about discarding, could be one such strategy. This pilot preliminarily tested a short-duration IE intervention compared with a control intervention. Over 3 days, adults diagnosed with HD (n = 32) were randomly assigned to either write about and imagine their wor

Imaginative elaboration in agenesis of the corpus callosum: topic modeling and perplexity.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found deficits in imaginative elaboration and social inference to be associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC; Renteria-Vasquez et al., 2022; Turk et al., 2009). In the current study, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) responses from a neurotypical control group and a group of individuals with ACC were used to further study the capacity for imaginative elaboration and story coherence. METHOD: Topic modeling was employed utilizing Latent Diritchlet Allocation to characterize the narrative responses to the pictures used in the TAT. A measure of the dif

Imagined Musical Scale Relationships Decoded from Auditory Cortex.

Notes in a musical scale convey different levels of stability or incompleteness, forming what is known as a tonal hierarchy. Levels of stability conveyed by these scale degrees are partly responsible for generating expectations as a melody proceeds, for emotions deriving from fulfillment (or not) of those expectations, and for judgments of overall melodic well-formedness. These functions can be extracted even during imagined music. We investigated whether patterns of neural activity in fMRI could be used to identify heard and imagined notes, and if patterns associated with heard notes could id

EEG differentiates left and right imagined Lower Limb movement.

BACKGROUND: Identifying which EEG signals distinguish left from right leg movements in imagined lower limb movement is crucial to building an effective and efficient brain-computer interface (BCI). Past findings on this issue have been mixed, partly due to the difficulty in collecting and isolating the relevant information. The purpose of this study was to contribute to this new and important literature. RESEARCH QUESTION: Can left versus right imagined stepping be differentiated using the alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies of EEG data at four electrodes (C1, C2, PO3, and PO4)? METHODS: An e

Semantic and emotional content of imagined representations in human occipitotemporal cortex.

Mental imagery is a critical cognitive function, clinically important, but poorly understood. When visual objects are perceived, many of their sensory, semantic and emotional properties are represented in occipitotemporal cortex. Visual imagery has been found to activate some of the same brain regions, but it was not known what properties are re-created in these regions during imagery. We therefore examined the representation during imagery for two stimuli in depth, by comparing the pattern of fMRI response to the patterns evoked by the perception of 200 diverse objects chosen to de-correlate
