Alcoholic hyalin (AH) was isolated and purified from post-mortem livers of patients with alcoholic hepatitis. Antibodies against AH (anti-AH) were raised in guinea-pigs. Their specificity was demonstrated by immunofluorescence and by immunoabsorption. Results are given of investigations of E rosettes in patients with chronic lymphadenosis and malignant lymphoma. The quantity of E rosettes was expressed both as per cents and in absolute numbers calculated from the total amount of lymphocytes in peripheral blood. Two aspects of the phagocytic process in normal and lepromatous polymorphonuclears (PMN) and monocytes (MN) were studied. These aspects were endocytosis and adherence to surfaces. A high proportion of peripheral-blood lymphocytes formed spontaneous rosettes with mouse red cells in 22 out of 23 cases of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL); the proportion was significantly higher than in 19 cases of other B-lymphoproliferative disorders (non-CLL group) and in 19 normal controls. Human lymphocytes of known B or T derivation were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after rosetting with SRBC. After collection of the cells onto silver membranes the samples were prepared for SEM by the critical point drying method. The leucocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) test was assessed as a means for measuring specific cell mediated immunity (CMI) in invasive amoebiasis. The LAI test and the amoebic gel diffusion (AGD) test were performed on 20 patients admitted to hospital with amoebic liver abscess (ALA) and 24 control subjects with no demonstrable clinical amoebiasis.
