INTRODUCTION: Although the phenomenon of cytokine storm is well described in patients with severe COVID-19, little is known about the role of the immune system in asymptomatic patients, especially in the group with autoimmune diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
AIM: To assess the stimulation of the immune system expressed through the production of cytokines in IBD patients with asymptomatic COVID-19.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a multi-centre, prospective study in which the concentration of many cytokines (IL-1a, IL-1b, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-

Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as spondyloarthritis (SpA), psoriasis, Crohn's disease (CD), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain challenging illnesses. They often strike at a young age and cause lifelong morbidity, representing a considerable burden for the affected individuals and society. Pioneering studies have revealed the presence of a TNF-dependent proinflammatory cytokine cascade in several IMIDs, and the introduction of anti-TNF therapy 20 years ago has proven effective to reduce inflammation and clinical symptoms in RA, SpA, and other IMID, providing unprecedented

Insulin resistance (IR) is a general phenomenon of many physiological states, disease states, and diseases. IR has been described in diabetes mellitus, obesity, infection, sepsis, trauma, painful states such as postoperative pain and migraine, schizophrenia, major depression, chronic mental stress, and others. In arthritis, abnormalities of glucose homeostasis were described in 1920; and in 1950 combined glucose and insulin tests unmistakably demonstrated IR. The phenomenon is now described in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, a

In 37 patients with some hereditary diseases of the nervous system (deforming muscular dystonia, hepatocerebral dystrophy, essential tremor, etc.), as well as in 22 healthy subjects (donors), the percentage and the absolute content of the T- and B-lymphocytes in the blood were determined. Use was made of the reactions of spontaneous, active, and complementary rosette formation and determination of the B-cells from superficial immunoglobulins. In all the hereditary diseases listed a drop of the content of thymus-dependent lymphocytes and an increase of the capacity of lymphocytes for complement

OBJECTIVE: Biomarkers using routine laboratory tests accurately presenting systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease activity may have important practical values in clinical settings. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII; neutrophil X platelet/lymphocyte) as potential biomarkers of disease activity in cases with SLE.
METHODS: In this case-control observational study, cases with SLE and demographically similar healthy controls were included. For clinical evaluat

Twenty-one patients with arthritis and dermatitis following intestinal bypass surgery were studied. The arthritis was polyarticular, remittent, and intermittent. Typically, the synovial fluid was inflammatory. The commonest inflammatory skin lesion was a vesiculopustular dermatitis. Nineteen patients and serum immmune complexes using the Raji cell technic. Seventeen patients had serum cryoproteins, primarily consisting of IgG 1, IgG 3, C3, and C4. Three patients had both Escherichia coli antigens and anti-E. coli antibody in their cryoprotein. Five patients had granular and one had linear depo

The data from the literature and the authors' own studies on changes in the lungs in systemic diseases of the connective tissue with immune disorders: systemic lupus erythematosus, progressive systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periarteriitis nodosum are presented. Changes in the lungs in the above diseases have some common features: damage of the microcirculatory bed, increased vascular permeability, impregnation with plasma of alveolar septae and vessel walls, cellular reactions, and septo-alveolar sclerosis. Specific features of each of the diseases under study were demonstrated.

Secreted and Transmembrane Protein 1 (SECTM1) is a versatile immunomodulatory protein that exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. Initially identified for its interaction with the T-cell receptor CD7, it was primarily regarded as a co-stimulatory molecule restricted to lymphoid signaling. Recent evidence has significantly expanded this paradigm, revealing that SECTM1 serves as a pivotal bridge between innate and adaptive immune responses. Beyond its classic role, SECTM1 interacts with alternative receptors like the glucocorticoid-induced TNFR-related protein to regulate macrophage ac

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and linked to higher mortality rates, but its relationship with the systemic immunoinflammatory index (SII) remains unclear, highlighting the need for further research.
METHODS: The SII is calculated by multiplying the counts of platelets and neutrophils, followed by dividing that product by the lymphocyte count. A diagnosis of CKD is made when the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is below 60 mL/min/1.73 m². To further analyze the data, a multivariable Cox regression analysis, along with subgroup assessments, was performed. Analysi

Host barriers such as the skin, the lung mucosa, the intestinal mucosa and the oral cavity are crucial at preventing contact with potential threats and are populated by a diverse population of innate and adaptive immune cells. Alterations in antigen recognition driven by genetic and environmental factors can lead to autoimmune systemic diseases such rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and food allergy. Here we review how different immune cells residing at epithelial barriers, host-derived signals and environmental signals are involved in the initiation and progression of autoimm

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In addition to combined central and peripheral demyelination, other immune diseases could involve both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
METHODS: To identify immune-mediated diseases responsible for symptomatic combined central/peripheral nervous system involvement (ICCPs), we conducted a multicentric retrospective study and assessed clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological features of patients fulfilling our ICCP criteria.
RESULTS: Thirty patients (20 males) were included and followed during a median of 79.5 months (interqu

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterised by cognitive impairment, behavioural alteration, and functional decline. Over 130 AD-associated susceptibility loci have been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), while whole genome sequencing (WGS) and whole exome sequencing (WES) studies have identified AD-associated rare variants. These variants are enriched in APOE, TREM2, CR1, CD33, CLU, BIN1, CD2AP, PILRA, SCIMP, PICALM, SORL1, SPI1, RIN3, and more genes. Given that aging is the single largest risk factor for late-onset AD (LOAD), the accumulat

Prion diseases are a unique group of infectious chronic neurodegenerative disorders to which there are no cures. Although prion infections do not stimulate adaptive immune responses in infected individuals, the actions of certain immune cell populations can have a significant impact on disease pathogenesis. After infection, the targeting of peripherally-acquired prions to specific immune cells in the secondary lymphoid organs (SLO), such as the lymph nodes and spleen, is essential for the efficient transmission of disease to the brain. Once the prions reach the brain, interactions with other i

Arterial hypertension represents a serious public health problem, being a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The availability of many antihypertensive therapeutic strategies still fails to adequately treat around 20% of hypertensive patients, who are considered resistant to conventional treatment. In the pathogenesis of hypertension, immune system mechanisms are activated and both the innate and adaptive immune responses play a crucial role. However, what, when and how the immune system is triggered during hypertension development is still largely undefined. In this context, thi

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) after transplantation remains a major concern. Little is known about what drives the increased cardiovascular risk in transplant recipients apart from traditional risk factors. The immune system is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and coronary artery disease in the general population. Recently, inhibition of interleukin 1 - β by canakinumab versus placebo decreased the incidence of cardiovascular events. Emerging evidence points to a role of adaptive cellular immunity in the development of CVD. Especially, expansion of pro-inflammatory

Gaucher, the most prevalent lysosomal disorder, is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder due to a deficiency of glucocerebrosidase. Glucocerebrosidase deficiency leads to the accumulation of glucosylceramide primarily in cells of mononuclear-macrophage lineage. Clinical alterations are visceral, hematological, and skeletal. Bone disorder in Gaucher disease produces defects on bone metabolism and structure and patients suffer from bone pain and crisis. Skeletal problems include osteopenia, osteoporosis, osteolytic lesions, and osteonecrosis. On the other hand a chronic stimulation of the im

Platelets have a central function in repairing vascular damage and stopping acute blood loss. They are equally central to thrombus formation in cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and ischaemic stroke. Beyond these classical prothrombotic diseases, immune mediated pathologies such as haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) or paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) also feature an increased tendency to form thrombi in various tissues. It has become increasingly clear that the complement system, part of the innate immune system, has an important role in the pathophysiology of the
