Adolescents who experience social anxiety concerns often display symptoms and impairments when interacting with unfamiliar peers. For adolescent clients, reducing symptoms and impairments within these interactions comprises a key treatment target within exposure-based therapies for social anxiety. Recent work on mechanisms of change in exposure-based therapies highlights the need for therapeutic exposures to simulate real-world manifestations of anxiety-provoking social situations. Yet, researchers encounter difficulty with gathering ecologically valid data about social interactions with unfam

Although Exposure Therapy (ET) is the first-line treatment of Specific Phobia (SP), there is no clear consensus on which factors influence its success, and thus on how to conduct it most efficiently. This review summarizes the current state of research regarding this topic. N = 111 studies were in accordance with our eligibility criteria: participants had at least symptoms of SP, the intervention was ET and the study investigated a factor influencing its success. Best evidence for positive effects was found for low trait anxiety, high motivation and high self-efficacy before the ET, high corti

Interpersonal trauma can be disruptive at any point in the lifespan; however, it carries a unique consequence profile when repetitive betrayals and abuse are present in early childhood. In the case of Ruby, she developed various parts to manage her distress, some of whom focused on engaging in risky or other destructive behavior without the knowledge of the rest of the system, as well as significant substance use to mediate her pain. This case study focuses on what has worked over the course of her 15-year treatment history with this author. Although she was not in therapy for that entire time

BACKGROUND: The RESET (Reconsolidation, Exposure, and Short-term Emotional Transformation) clinical protocol is an intensive, structured trauma-focused intervention designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within six daily sessions. While Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy remains a leading evidence-based treatment, challenges such as high dropout rates and relapses highlight the need for innovative approaches.
OBJECTIVE: This paper outlines RESET's theoretical foundations, session structure, and clinical implementation, offering a detailed framework for its integration into psych

Exposure therapy (ET) forms a vital part of effective psychotherapy for anxiety-related presentations including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is often underutilised in clinical practice. Using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), this systematic review synthesised existing literature on the determinants of ET implementation for anxiety-related presentations and examined differences across presentations and developmental subgroups. Fifty-two eligible studies were assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, with 38

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), characterized by the combination of obsession and compulsion, is a clinical and therapeutic challenge. Many patients with OCD do not respond to first-line treatments such as serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and exposure and response prevention psychotherapy (ERP). For these resistant patients, some preliminary studies have shown that ketamine, a non-selective glutamatergic NMDA receptors antagonist, could improve the obsessive symptoms. A number of these studies have also suggested that the combination of ketamine with ERP psychotherapy may j

Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for adolescents with anxiety disorders, the majority remain impaired following treatment. We developed a group CBT program (RISK) with high degrees of exposure practice and family and school involvement delivered in a community-based setting and investigated its effectiveness. The treatment involved adolescents (N = 90), with a primary diagnosis of anxiety disorder (82%) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (18%), and their families who received 38 hours of group treatment over 10 weeks. Diagnostic status and symptom severity we

Advances in technology and increased usage of electronic mobile devices over the past decade have changed the way gamblers engage with online gambling. The convenience of mobile electronic devices is understood to be a major contributor to the increase of online gambling, which in turn has been implicated in the growth of sports betting. Emerging evidence suggests several sources of differentiation between mobile and other online gambling, which have important psychological implications. Given the inherent differences, we cannot conclude that evidence for the effectiveness of treatment for non

In 2018, a graduate level student filed a complaint regarding the use of exposure-based therapy for persons with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experiencing violent obsessions. In the investigation, the licensing board expressed concern about safety of us of exposure and response prevention (ERP) with children and in public venues. The licensing board also struggled with accurate assessment of a clinician's efficacy in following the gold-standard treatment for OCD. Despite extensive research demonstrating ERP is a safe, effective treatment for OCD, stigma against exposure based treatments

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience urging the individual to take action to restore the integrity of the body. The transition from a common episode of acute pain to a state of intermittent or chronic pain has been a constant preoccupation of researchers and clinicians alike. In this review, we approach chronic pain from a modern learning perspective that incorporates cognitive, affective, behavioral and motivational aspects. We view pain as a biologically hard-wired signal of bodily harm that competes with other demands in the person's environment. The basic tenet is that pa

Dissociative symptoms including depersonalization and derealization are commonly experienced by individuals suffering from panic disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Few studies have been published investigating the specific treatment of these symptoms in individuals diagnosed with panic disorder or PTSD, despite evidence that the subset of individuals with panic disorder who experience depersonalization and derealization report more panic attacks as well as greater panic severity and functional impairment. Furthermore, it has been shown that these symptoms can impede treatment an

Numerous creative methods have been developed to incorporate computer technology into cognitive behavior therapy for anxiety disorders. In contrast, little has been written about the role that computer technology might play in therapy with hypnosis. This article is an exploration of some basic ways that clinicians can use images from computer search engines and YouTube to enhance exposure therapy for phobias. These adaptations may be particularly useful for the subgroup of patients who have difficulty re-creating and experiencing vivid and compelling aversive imagery in hypnosis, and consequen

Background: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and debilitating condition that challenges mental health services worldwide. Effective psychological interventions are crucial for treatment, among which Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) are prominent. Comparative analyses of these treatments, considering moderators such as patient demographics and treatment specifics, are necessary to tailor interventions effectively. Objective: This meta-analysis synthesised findings from 175 treatment arms across 163 studies to evaluate the comparative effectiveness

Psychotherapies for social anxiety disorder (SAD) encompass various protocols and delivery formats; consequently, an investigation into the relative efficacy of different treatments is needed. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of different common psychotherapies for SAD and identify the most effective psychotherapies for SAD. Using a Bayesian network meta-analysis, we compared the relative efficacy of six common psychotherapies: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive restructuring (CR), exposure therapy (ET), psychodynamic therapy (PDT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and mindfulne

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are part of the normal response to trauma. Most trauma survivors will recover over time without intervention, but a significant minority will develop chronic PTSD, which is unlikely to remit without intervention. Currently, only two medications, sertraline and paroxetine, are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat PTSD, and the combination of brexpiprazole and sertraline and MDMA-assisted therapy have FDA applications pending. These medications, and the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, are not recommended as fir

BACKGROUND: With the global attack of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), cases with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been increasing steadily, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and as such, seeking effective treatments is an urgent matter. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a typical cognitive behavioral therapy targeting trauma-related psychological disorders and may be an effective intervention.
METHODS: A total of 111 COVID-19 patients near the discharge stage with positive screening results for posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) were randomly assigned

Specific phobia (SP) typically onsets in childhood and frequently predicts other mental health disorders later in life. Fortunately, childhood SP can be effectively treated with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), including the exposure-based one-session treatment (OST) approach. Despite empirical support for CBT and OST, clinicians, for various reasons, frequently fail to implement exposure-based therapy in routine clinical practice, including perceived difficulties in implementing exposure. Virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy may overcome some of these challenges and provides an alternative

Human trafficking is a major public health concern that brings about deleterious psychological consequences and sequelae. Although a number of risk and protective factors for the health consequences of human trafficking victims have been identified, there is a dearth of information in the area of treatment. Specifically, we found no articles comparing the different components of prevailing trauma treatment strategies, and the potential usefulness of these strategies in the treatment of human trafficking victims. To this end, we compared and contrasted the different therapeutic treatments typic
