BACKGROUND: Impulsivity may mediate the effect of rumination on daily drinking behaviors via a negative emotional cascade, though few studies have examined temporal associations of rumination and impulsivity leading to drinking within the day. Social drinking contexts may also influence the negative emotional cascade, with social and solitary conditions potentially moderating these associations.
METHODS: This study used multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) to examine the mediating effect of impulsivity between rumination and drinking behaviors at the within- and between-person level

Impulsivity and compulsivity are multidimensional transdiagnostic constructs with relevance to neurocognitive and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Broadly, impulsivity is the tendency to react quickly, while compulsivity is the tendency to perform repetitive and contextually inappropriate behaviors. Multiple cortical and subcortical neural pathways, neurotransmitter systems, synaptic plasticity changes, genetic factors, and epigenetic interactions influence decision-making, reward processing, and cognitive control. In this narrative review, we discuss the neural circuitry and disease mechanis

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates among veterans are substantially higher than non-veterans and continue to rise according to the most recent data. However, specific mechanisms underlying suicide risk are poorly understood and understudied in this population. We investigated the role of impulsivity and aggression in the suicide process in veterans.
METHOD: A total of 93 veterans (26 with no history of suicidal ideation or attempt, 38 with a history of suicidal ideation but no attempt, and 29 with a history of suicide attempt) were assessed for impulsivity and aggression traits, depression, and suicid

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the reliable risk factors of impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients through a meta-analysis on studies in which PD-ICBs were diagnosed by clinical interview.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI and Wanfang databases were searched. We selected studies ensuring that diagnosis of ICBs in PD patients depends on semi-structured interviews according to the clinical diagnostic criteria of ICBs. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate quality of the included studies. The analyzed factors included demographic information, cl

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED) often includes impulsive and compulsive behaviors related to eating behavior and food. Impulsivity and compulsivity generally may contribute to the etiology and maintenance of multiple psychiatric disorders including BED. This review aimed to identify and synthesize available behavioral studies of impulsivity and compulsivity among individuals with BED.
METHOD: A systematic search was performed focusing on BED and specific facets of impulsivity (rapid response and choice) and compulsivity (set-shifting, cognitive flexibility, and/or habit learning). All

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated a reciprocal relationship between community violence exposure and disruptive behavior problems among youth. No study to date, however, has explored the potential interaction between violence exposure in early adolescence and genetics.
METHODS: We explore the gene x environment interaction's impact on teacher-rated aggressive and impulsive behaviors. Violence exposure during the middle school years was assessed using self-report. Genetic data collection occurred in emerging adulthood. A polygenic score was created using findings from a conduct dis

Impulsivity is a personality-based risk factor that has been well studied in relation to risky sexual behavior. Recent conceptualizations of impulsivity have proposed multidimensional facets comprised of premeditation, perseverance, sensation seeking, negative urgency, and positive urgency (UPPS-P model). Prior studies have found that these facets are associated with risky sexual behavior in adolescent and college student samples, but no prior studies have evaluated them in clinical samples. The current study examined how impulsivity-related traits related to two different risky sexual behavio

To determine the clinical and demographic correlates of persistent, remitting, and new-onset impulse control behaviors (ICBs) before and after subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared the pre- and post-surgical prevalence of ICBs, classified as impulse control disorders (ICD), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding in 150 consecutive PD STN-DBS-treated patients and determined the association with motor, cognitive, neuropsychological, and neuropsychiatric endpoints. At baseline (before STN-DBS), ICBs were associated with younger age (p =

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Apathy and impulse control disorders (ICD) are two opposite motivational expressions of a continuous behavioural spectrum involving hypo- and hyperdopaminergia. Both syndromes share pathological (decreased vs increased) dopamine receptor stimulation states. Apathy belongs to the spectrum of hypodopaminergic symptoms together with anhedonia, anxiety and depression. Apathy is a key symptom of PD which worsens with disease progression. Animal models, imaging and pharmacological studies concur in pointing out dopa

OBJECTIVE: To test the effects of a novel cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)-based intervention delivered by a nurse therapist to patients with Parkinson disease (PD) with clinically significant impulse control behaviors (ICB).
METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial comparing up to 12 sessions of a CBT-based intervention compared to a waiting list control condition with standard medical care (SMC). A total of 27 patients were randomized to the intervention and 17 to the waiting list. Patients with a Mini-Mental State Examination score of <24 were excluded. The coprimary outcomes were

OBJECTIVE: Compulsivity has been associated with use of dopamine agonists used to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). Increasing use of these agents to treat fibromyalgia (FM) raises concern for this unexpected toxicity in a new group of patients. This is the first report of compulsive gambling and shopping among patients taking dopamine agonists for treatment of FM.
DESIGN: A retrospective chart review of all patients in a large, active FM research practice was used to identify compulsivity associated with dopamine agonists and describe its remission following dug withdrawal.
RESULTS: Of 3006 p

RATIONALE: Impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease are associated with psychiatric comorbidities, reduced quality of life, caregiver burden and serious psychosocial consequences. These behaviors greatly impact patients and their families, and pose a challenge for clinicians.
OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for ICBs in people with Parkinson's disease, and to assess whether the effects differ according to ICB subtype.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Movement Disorders Group Specialized Register, t

Trichotillomania (TTM), skin-picking disorder (SPD), and nail-biting (NB) are classified as Body-Focused Repetitive Disorders (BFRBDs), which share characteristics with both obsessive-compulsive and impulse control disorders. This study aimed to compare impulsivity, metacognitions, and clinical characteristics across BFRBDs. Ninety adolescents (aged 10-18 years) with BFRBDs and 40 healthy controls (HC) completed the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale-Child Version (RCADS-CV), the Metacognitions Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (MCQ-CA), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Br

OBJECTIVE: Impulsive aggression in youth is a significant clinical and public health concern, spanning multiple diagnostic categories and causing significant psychosocial impairment. To advance its assessment and treatment, recent research has focused on developing an empirically derived nosology that can distinguish impulsive aggression from other common childhood problems. The current study is a secondary analysis examining the associations between this empirically defined form of impulsive aggression, other psychiatric symptom dimensions, and behavioral approach and inhibition motivation of

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) display a set of impulsive-compulsive behaviors at some point during the course of illness. These behaviors range from the so-called behavioral addictions to dopamine dysregulation syndrome, punding and hoarding disorders. These behaviors have been consistently linked to the use of dopaminergic medications used to treat PD motor symptoms (dopamine agonists, levodopa, and other agents) and less consistently to neuromodulation techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). Since there are still no approved treatme

INTRODUCTION: Impulsive compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are debilitating disorders of repetitive, excessive, and compulsive nature affecting up to one third of PD patients. Objectives are to address clinical, psychiatric, and cognitive characteristics of ICBs and to define risk factors in PD patients in the initial motor stage, followed up for 5 years.
METHODS: We analyzed 106 consecutive PD outpatients at Hoehn and Yahr disease stage 1 and 125 healthy controls. The participants were assessed for the presence of any ICB using the current clinical criteria and underwent

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and related impulsive and compulsive behaviors (together called ICBs) have been increasingly recognized in the context of Parkinson's disease (PD) and treatment. The International Parkinson's and Movement Disorder Society commissioned a task force to assess available clinical screening instruments and rating scales, including their clinimetric properties, make recommendations regarding their utility, and suggest future directions in scale development and validation. The literature was systematically searched for scales measuring a range of reported ICBs in PD.
