A trithiocyanurate-based chelating agent for the stabilisation of lead in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

The widespread incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) has raised concerns regarding environmental pollution caused by the hazardous heavy metal lead (Pb) in fly ash (FA), necessitating safe treatment prior to landfill disposal. This study developed a novel organic chelating agent-TA (The chelating agent is named as an acronym derived from the two primary monomers), a trithiocyanuric acid-functionalized allylthiourea macromolecule, and evaluated its effectiveness in stabilising Pb in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA). Compared to conventional organic chelating agents suc

Effective treatment of leachate concentrate from waste incineration plant by combination of coagulation and direct contact evaporation.

In order to verify that coagulation as pre-treatment can reduce the temperature of the hot air used for direct contact evaporating the leachate concentrate (LC) and low-grade waste heat such as exhaust steam in the waste incineration plant can be used to evaporate the LC. The supernatants after coagulation using polymerized ferrous sulfate (PFS), polymeric-aluminum (PAC), polymeric silicate aluminum ferric (PSAF) and poly-aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC) as coagulants were further treated in a lab-scale direct contact evaporation system. The results showed that the best performance with removal

Simultaneous removal of sulfur dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from incineration flue gas using activated carbon fibers.

Incineration flue gas contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The effects of SO2 concentration (0, 350, 750, and 1000 ppm), reaction temperature (160, 200, and 280 degrees C), and the type of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) on the removal of SO2 and PAHs by ACFs were examined in this study. A fluidized bed incinerator was used to simulate practical incineration flue gas. It was found that the presence of SO2 in the incineration flue gas could drastically decrease removal of PAHs because of competitive adsorption. The effect of rise in the reaction temperature

Self-incineration: a controlled comparison of in-patient suicide attempts. Clinical features and history of self-harm.

A systematic survey of in-patient accidents and injuries in an inner London hospital over 9 years established that, after incisions and overdoses, self-incineration was one of the commoner methods of violent self-harm. A case-controlled study of in-patient suicide attempts compared a series of 12 self-incinerators with 12 patients using other methods. Irrespective of method, the suicide attempt was predominantly a psychotic act of young single people with chronic, severe disorders and considerable past parasuicide, in a setting of escalating self-harm. Younger age, greater psychiatric morbidit

A sulfur-resistant CuS-modified active coke for mercury removal from municipal solid waste incineration flue gas.

Adsorption is a typical method for air pollutant removal from flue gas. A CuS-modified active coke (CuS/AC) sorbent was developed to improve the elemental mercury removal efficiency from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) flue gas. The influences of the loading amount of CuS, reaction temperature, and flue gas components including O2, SO2, H2O, and HCl on Hg0 removal efficiency were investigated, respectively. The results showed that the mercury adsorption capacity of CuS/AC(20%) sorbent was about 7.17 mg/g with 50% breakthrough threshold, which is much higher than that of virgin active

High temperature abatement of acid gases from waste incineration. Part I: experimental tests in full scale plants.

In recent years, several waste-to-energy plants in Italy have experienced an increase of the concentration of acid gases (HCl, SO2 and HF) in the raw gas. This is likely an indirect effect of the progressive decrease of the amount of treated municipal waste, which is partially replaced by commercial waste. The latter is characterised by a higher variability of its chemical composition because of the different origins, with possible increase of the load of halogen elements such as chlorine (Cl) and fluorine (F), as well as of sulphur (S). A new dolomitic sorbent was then tested in four waste-to

Chemical states of trace elements in sewage sludge incineration ash by using x-ray absorption fine structure.

In this study, the chemical states of chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), and selenium (Se) in sewage sludge incineration ash were determined by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Sewage sludge incineration ash was sampled from several facilities, and XAFS measurements were carried out with a beam line BL01B1 at the SPring-8 facility. Cr K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra suggested that Cr compounds were predominantly speciated as Cr(III) and the fraction of Cr(VI) was very minor. Compared to the reference materials, Cr XANES spectra of the incineration ashe

[Genotoxicity of stack gas condensates of Bavarian waste incineration plants. I. Stack gas condensate--sample collection techniques].

Investigations into the toxicity and the chemical analytics of stack gas condensates from 21 waste incineration plants (locations in Bavaria) were undertaken in the years 1990 to 1995. A decisive prerequisite was the development of a simple, standardizable technique for sample collection. It was done by condensating stack gases at 0 to 5 degrees C in an intensive glass condensator. Certain types of compounds showed a different behaviour of separation at the temperatures which were used. Whereas bivalent ionic mercury and chlorophenols were comparatively well separated with amounts of 60 to 95%

Collaborative prediction and intelligent control of multiple pollutants emission from a large-scale waste incinerator.

Owing to the complexity of municipal solid waste (MSW), flue gas composition and operating conditions, it is challenging to predict pollutant emissions accurately and control them intelligently in the MSW incineration process. This study uses a 750 t/d large-scale grate-type MSW incinerator as the research object. Based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) model, collaborative prediction (co-prediction) of multiple pollutants (HCl, SO2, NOx, and PM) emissions from MSW incinerator flue gas was achieved. By coupling the prediction model with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, an inte

Artificial intelligence-based forecasting model for incinerator in sulfur recovery units to predict SO2 emissions.

Pollutant emissions from chemical plants are a major concern in the context of environmental safety. A reliable emission forecasting model can provide important information for optimizing the process and improving the environmental performance. In this work, forecasting models are developed for the prediction of SO2 emission from a Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU). Since SRUs incorporate complex chemical reactions, first-principle models are not suitable to predict emission levels based on a given feed condition. Accordingly, artificial intelligence-based models such as standard machine learning (ML

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances fate and transport at a wastewater treatment plant with a collocated sewage sludge incinerator.

This study aims to understand the fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and inorganic fluoride (IF) at an undisclosed municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operating a sewage sludge incinerator (SSI). A robust statistical analysis characterized concentrations and mass flows at all WWTP and SSI primary influents/effluents, including thermal-treatment derived airborne emissions. WWTP-level net mass flows (NMFs) of total PFAS were not statistically different from zero. SSI-level NMFs indicate that PFAS, and specifically perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), are being brok

Cesium distribution and phases in proxy experiments on the incineration of radioactively contaminated waste from the Fukushima area.

After the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake and Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant accident, incineration was initially adopted as an effective technique for the treatment of post-disaster wastes. Accordingly, considerable amounts of radioactively contaminated residues were immediately generated through incineration. The level of radioactivity associated with radiocesium in the incineration ash residues (bottom ash and fly ash) became significantly high (several thousand to 100,000 Bq/kg) as a result of this treatment. In order to understand the modes of occurrence of radiocesium, bottom ash produ

Metal catalyzed formation of chlorinated aromatic compounds: a study of the correlation pattern in incinerator fly ash.

Chlorinated aromatics are unintentionally formed and released from combustion and other thermal processes involving organic matter and chlorine. The catalytic activity of incinerator fly ash in the low-temperature formation of chlorinated aromatics has been demonstrated in both laboratory experiments and full-scale trials. Copper has been shown to be an effective catalyst, but several other transition metals possess a similar activity. Here results are reported from a series of full-scale combustion trials with different fractions of household and industrial wastes, with waste from forestry as

The Emission of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators during the Combustion Cycle.

The emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during start-up, burning, and burn-out were determined for four municipal solid waste MSW incinerators. During start-up conditions, PAH concentrations were shown to be high due to unstable combustion. A positive correlation was seen between PAH concentrations and the organic carbon content of the dust. This study was conducted to examine the emission behaviors of PAHs according to furnace type and to measure emissions during the combustion cycle. The organic carbon in the dust, as well as PAH emissions, during three combustion periods wer
