Intensity Matters: Heterogeneous impact of cigarette tax reform on drinking behaviors by smoking intensity.

This paper investigates the relationship between smoking and drinking behaviors across different smoking intensity groups, using a unique policy shock that increased cigarette taxes in South Korea. Using the Korean Health Panel, we employ a difference-in-differences approach to estimate the causal effect of the cigarette price increase on alcohol consumption among heavy, average, and light smokers. We find that an increase in cigarette prices reduces drinking behavior only among heavy smokers, while cigarette consumption is reduced across all smokers. Subgroup analysis shows that the reduction

The impact of terminating cost-sharing reductions payments on health insurance plan choices.

The Trump administration terminated cost-sharing reductions (CSRs) payments to health insurers in 2017, while still required insurers to provide CSRs to eligible enrollees in the Marketplace. Marketplace administration data reveals that, in response to this termination, insurers raised premiums to compensate for their loss. Consequently, premium increases led to more advanced premium tax credits for enrollees in the Marketplace. To investigate the impact of CSRs payment termination on low-income consumer insurance plan choices, I leverage variations in state price regulations and employed a di

Coupons and state tobacco policy context as predictors of tobacco use among those reporting e-cigarette use in the U.S.: Findings from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study waves 5-6 (2018-2021).

BACKGROUND: Receipt of cigarette and e-cigarette coupons predicts initiation and progression of use and hinders cessation. Less is known about how coupons operate in different tobacco regulatory environments. The current study utilized longitudinal data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to address this research gap. METHODS: Adults who reported past 30-day (P30D) e-cigarette use at Wave 5 (2018-2019) were included (N = 3632). The primary outcome was Wave 6 (2021) P30D any tobacco use. Wave 5 predictors were receipt of e-cigarette coupons, state e-cigarette tax,

Relationships between US state alcohol policies and alcohol outcomes: differences by gender and race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol taxation and availability restrictions are among the most effective methods for reducing alcohol use and problems, yet may affect demographic subgroups differently. Understanding who responds to specific policies can inform approaches for reducing disparities. We examined how state-level beverage-specific taxes and availability restrictions in the United States are associated with consumption and alcohol-related problems across subgroups defined by gender and race/ethnicity. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data came from the 2000-15 National Alcohol Surveys (n =

Relative and absolute inequalities in cerebrovascular disease mortality rates: exploring the influence of socioeconomic status and urbanization levels in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Limited evidence exists regarding the socioeconomic inequalities in cerebrovascular disease (CBD) mortality at different urbanization levels. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic inequalities and urbanization levels in township-based CBD mortality in Taiwan. METHODS: Socioeconomic variables, including the percentages of low-income households, individuals with a university education and above, and tax payments, were measured at the township level from 2011 to 2020. Urbanization was also determined by the national survey and divided into seven le

Equity in paying for health care services under a national insurance system.

The debate over the future of the health care delivery system evolves around the policy issue of what constitutes a fair distribution of the medical services which are considered essential to prolonging life, curing disease, and relieving pain. A case can be made that a socially equitable distribution implies that consumption of medical services is independent of the consumer's income and payment for them unrelated to utilization. The present paper examines to what extent the provisions for financing a national health insurance system are likely to advance or hinder the fair distribution of he

Race Matters: Income Shares, Income Inequality, and Income Mobility for All U.S. Races.

Using unique linked data, we examine income inequality and mobility across racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Our data encompass the universe of income tax filers in the United States for the period 2000-2014, matched with individual-level race and ethnicity information from multiple censuses and American Community Survey data. We document both income inequality and mobility trends over the period. We find significant stratification in terms of average incomes by racial/ethnic group and distinct differences in within-group income inequality. The groups with the highest incomes-whit

The Fickle finger of quackery in otology: the saga of Curtis H. Muncie, Osteopath.

OBJECTIVE: Throughout history, false and outrageous cures for deafness have been abundant. Most of these false remedies were short lived and did not gain much attention. However, Curtis H. Muncie, a New York osteopathic physician, accrued vast wealth and fame over a half century career (1910-1960) with his proclaimed cure of deafness through reconstruction of the Eustachian tube with his index finger. Through creative marketing, clever manipulation of the press, and outrageous claims of efficacy, he profited handsomely from what was, no doubt, the most egregious and remunerative instance of de

Progress and challenges in tobacco control policies in Mexico, 2003-2017: an approach using the Tobacco Control Scale.

The study aims to assess the implementation of tobacco control policies in Mexico from 2003 through 2017 using the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS). The TCS is a research tool widely used in the European region. It facilitates assessment of tobacco control policy implementation based on six cost-effective interventions: tobacco taxes, smoke-free policies, advertising bans, public spending on the information campaign, health warnings, and smoking cessation treatment, reflecting results in a total score between 0 and 100. From 2003 through 2017, Mexico's total score improved from 24/100 to 55/100, wi

Influences of relative deprivation on health inequality of rural residents in China: A moderated mediation model.

Analyzing the relationship between individual relative deprivation and rural residents' health inequality is a deepening of the research on the social impact of individual relative deprivation. On the theoretical basis of the absolute and relative income hypothesis, using the data of China Family Panel Studies in 2018, taking other residents in the village as the reference group, this paper selects the relative income deprivation and absolute income to comprehensively quantify the generalized impact of farmers' income gap, introduces the psychological capital guidance mechanism, and constructs

The general public's willingness to pay for tax increases to support unrestricted access to an Alzheimer's disease medication.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder highlighted by progressive declines in cognitive and functional abilities. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the general public's maximum willingness to pay ((M)WTP) for an increase in annual personal income taxes to fund unrestricted access to AD medications. METHODS: We randomly recruited 500 Canadians nationally and used computer-assisted telephone interviewing to administer a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained four 'efficacy' scenarios describing an AD medication as capable of symptomatically treating cogni

Landscape of tobacco control in sub-Saharan Africa.

Yearly, tobacco use kills about 8 million people globally, 80% of whom live in low/middle-income countries. Given sub-Saharan Africa's (SSA) rapidly increasing and youthful population, growing incomes and the increased presence of the tobacco industry, the number of tobacco users is growing. The region is predicted to face a heavier burden of tobacco-related diseases and deaths in the future. We examined the policy, advocacy, economic and media landscapes of tobacco control as well as tobacco industry interference in SSA. We also highlighted key challenges and priorities for intervention in th

The effectiveness of tobacco control policies on vulnerable populations in the USA: a review.

Despite population-wide efforts to reduce tobacco use, low-income populations in the USA have much higher rates of tobacco use compared with the general population. The principal components of tobacco control policies in the USA include cigarette taxes, clean indoor air laws and comprehensive interventions to increase access to tobacco cessation services. In this review, we describe the effectiveness of these policies and interventions in reducing tobacco use among vulnerable populations, focusing on persons with mental health disorders and substance use disorders, persons who have experienced

Income and education affect prognosis and treatment in symptomatic myeloma : A population-based study on 8672 multiple myeloma patients diagnosed 2008-2021 from the Swedish myeloma registry.

Despite advancements in multiple myeloma treatment, prognostic variability persists. We investigated the impact of income and education on treatment and survival in a country with publicly funded healthcare. We analysed data from the Swedish Myeloma Registry (2008-2021) linked to national registers. Cox models assessed survival, adjusting for demographics and comorbidities. Treatment patterns were compared using cumulative incidence functions. Among 8,672 patients, higher education and income correlated with prolonged survival. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for low income were 1.4 (95% CI 1.3-1

Price-Responsiveness of Cigarette Smoking Behaviors Across Income Groups in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: To compare price-responsiveness of smoking participation and intensity across US income groups. METHODS: We pooled the 2015-2016, 2018-2019, and 2022 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey data (n = 337 974 aged 18+), classifying respondents into poor, low-income, middle-income, and high-income groups (<100%, 100%-199%, 200%-399%, and ≥ 400% of the federal poverty level [FPL], respectively). Using a two-part econometric model of cigarette demand, we estimated the price elasticities of smoking participation and intensity for each income group. State-level cigaret

The effects of an unconditional cash transfer on parents' mental health in the United States.

The provision of unconditional cash transfers may be one effective policy strategy for improving mental health, but causal evidence on their efficacy is rare in high-income countries. This study investigates the mental health consequences of the 2021 child tax credit (CTC) expansion, which temporarily provided unconditional and monthly cash support to most families with children in the United States. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we exploit differences in CTC benefit levels for households with younger versus older children. More generous CTC transfers are asso

Changes in households' vulnerability to food insecurity in Canada before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of household food insecurity in the 10 provinces rose from 16.8% in 2019 to 18.4% in 2022 and 22.9% in 2023. This study examines whether and how the sociodemographic and economic patterning of households' vulnerability to food insecurity changed across these years. DATA AND METHODS: Using data from the master files for households in the 10 provinces from the 2018, 2021, and 2022 cycles of the Canadian Income Survey, year-specific logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the predicted probability of household food insecurity by sociodemographic and econo

Food insecurity and youth suicidal behaviours: Evidence from the Canadian Health Survey of Children and Youth.

OBJECTIVE: Youth suicide, a major cause of death, is linked to poverty and other adverse experiences. Evidence of its association with food insecurity is unclear due to inadequate controls for household income in previous research. This cross-sectional study used independent reports of household income, food insecurity, and suicidal behaviours to examine these associations in a population-based sample. METHODS: The 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth surveyed 6735 youth (15-17 years), gathering data on sadness/hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Adults provide
