The association between medication use and lifestyle factors in independently living older people: impact of Mediterranean diet and physical activity.

OBJECTIVES: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and engagement in physical activity (PA) are associated with a lower risk of chronic disease, yet their relationship with medication use in older adults is less clear. This study examined cross-sectional associations between MedDiet adherence, PA levels, and medication use, including polypharmacy, in independently living older Australians. DESIGN: A cross-sectional observational study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline data were drawn from the MedWalk trial, including 161 participants (119 females, 42 males; aged 60-90 years) residin

Self-Reported Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nutrition and Physical Activity Behaviour in Dutch Older Adults Living Independently.

The aim was to explore the self-reported impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition and physical activity behaviour in Dutch older adults and to identify subgroups most susceptible to this impact. Participants (N = 1119, aged 62-98 y, 52.8% female) of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam living independently completed a COVID-19 questionnaire. Questions on diagnosis, quarantine and hospitalization were asked, as well as impact of the pandemic on ten nutrition and physical activity behaviours. Associations of pre-COVID-19 assessed characteristics (age, sex, region, household composition, se

Carotid pulse pressure and intima media thickness are independently associated with cerebral hemodynamic pulsatility in community-living older adults.

Vascular aging is associated with markers of cerebrovascular impairment. Whether discrete characteristics of arterial structure and function have independent and/or additive effects on cerebral hemodynamics, however, is not completely understood. We examined the association of cerebral hemodynamics with common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and pulse pressure (PP) in 61 older adults with prevalent cardiometabolic risk but no history of cerebrovascular disease. We calculated pulsatility index (PI) and hypercapnic reactivity of the middle cerebral artery, as well as global blood flo

Patterns of employment and independent living of adult graduates with learning disabilities and mental retardation of an inclusionary high school vocational program.

Vocational/employment and independent living for individuals with disabilities has been a major area of interest for those interested in transition from school to work and adulthood. Recent statistics for such individuals continue to be poor and problematic. The present study investigated a group of adults with either specific learning disabilities or mild mental retardation who had graduated or exited an inclusionary high school which emphasized vocational technology training and independent living skills. The results indicated higher than the national average for employment and rate of pay a

Post-Secondary Education Outcomes for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Self-Determination, Independent Living, Employment, and the Impact of COVID-19.

Post-secondary education (PSE) plays an important role in preparing individuals with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) to gain employment and independent living. Despite the recent increase in PSE programs, however, there is a lack of research examining outcomes of individuals with IDD who have attended a PSE program. This study examined three years of data from students who participated in one PSE program that focuses on the acquisition of skills regarding self-determination, employment, and independent living. We analyzed the outcome data of program graduates regarding their

The majority of community-dwelling hip fracture patients return to independent living with minor increase in care needs: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fracture patients are fragile, and the majority fail to fully recover to their pre-fracture functional level, resulting in an increase in institutionalization. We aimed to investigate risk factors for being dependent at discharge and for failure to return to independent living 12 months after a hip fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2011 to 2017, all surgically treated hip fracture patients admitted from their own homes were included in this prospective cohort study. Patient characteristics were registered, including age, sex, lifestyle, comorbidities, pre-fracture New Mo

Factors Influencing Risk of Homelessness among Youth in Transition from Foster Care in Oklahoma: Implications for Reforming Independent Living Services and Opportunities.

Research suggests that youth aging out of foster care may be at higher risk of experiencing homelessness than other youth. Among this already at-risk population there may be certain characteristics that further exacerbate the risk. This paper uses data collected from various local and state agencies to further examine significant predictors of homelessness among youth who have aged out of foster care.

Optimal Cutoff Values of Site-Specific Phase Angle for Predicting Independence in Activities of Daily Living in Post-stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA) is a potential indicator of nutritional status and functional outcomes. However, optimal regional PhA cutoff values for predicting activities of daily living (ADL) post-stroke are unclear. We aimed to determine these cutoffs and assess whether PhA adds prognostic value to established clinical models. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, stroke patients undergoing inpatient rehabilitation had body composition and PhA measured via multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. The primary outcome was ADL independence at discharge (motor Functional Indepe

The impact of assistive living technology on perceived independence of people with a physical disability in executing daily activities: a systematic literature review.

PURPOSE: People with physical disabilities often require lifetime support and experience challenges to maintain or (re)define their level of independence. Assistive living technologies (ALT) are promising to increase independent living and execution of activities of daily living (ADL). This paper provides a systematic literature review that aims to analyse the present state of the literature about the impact of ALT on perceived independence of people with a physical disability receiving long-term care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Databases Embase, Medline, and Web of Science were searched for elig

External locus of control and cognitive ability independently distinguish men in prison from community living non-offending men.

BACKGROUND: The ability to cope with failure and subsequent feedback is crucial for prisoner rehabilitation. Impaired executive function in prisoners, high trait aggression and external locus of control can undermine the capacity to react to feedback in socially adaptive ways. AIM: To investigate the relationships between aggression, locus of control, and attribution in an experimental task involving feedback about failure and success. METHODS: Two groups were compared: 1. Imprisoned men, 2. Community living men without a history of incarceration. Aggression, locus of control and reasoning a

Depression and cigarette smoking independently relate to reduced health-related quality of life among Canadians living with hepatitis C.

BACKGROUND: Many people living with chronic viral hepatitis C (HCV) report reduced health-related quality of life. The relative contribution of behavioural, psychosocial and HCV disease factors to reduction in HCV health-related quality of life is not well understood. The objectives of the present study were to compare standardized health-related quality of life scores between Canadian HCV patients and age-matched Canadian and American norms, and to examine the relative contribution of biopsychosocial variables (ie, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake and depression) to health-related quality of

Single-Center Experience in Managing Right Liver Grafts From Trifurcation or Independent Right Posterior Portal Vein in Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The right liver graft has sometimes been from the trifurcation portal vein (TPV) or independent right posterior portal vein (IRPPV). Managing these PV anatomies to increase the recipient's survival rate remains challenging. Many published techniques could overcome this problem, such as simple unification venoplasty (SUV), autologous portal Y-graft interposition, conjoined unification venoplasty (CUV) with a baseball-like conduit, and SUV plus circumferential fence-like vein extension. This study reviewed our strategy for managing the right liver grafts from TPV or IRPPV in adult li

Overview and Categorization of Robots Supporting Independent Living of Elderly People: What Activities Do They Support and How Far Have They Developed.

Over the past decades, many robots for the elderly have been developed, supporting different activities of elderly people. A systematic review in four scientific literature databases and a search in article references and European projects was performed in order to create an overview of robots supporting independent living of elderly people. The robots found were categorized based on their development stage, the activity domains they claim to support, and the type of support provided (i.e., physical, non-physical, and/or non-specified). In total, 107 robots for the elderly were identified. Six
