Contrasting population genetic structures of freshwater eels (Anguilla marmorata, A. bicolor, A. mossambica) from Madagascar.

Freshwater eels (genus Anguilla) are of major biological and commercial interest due to their complex catadromous life cycle and as a high-value fishery resource, but the biology of tropical species is still poorly understood. This study investigates the genetic integrity, diversity and population structure of three species of tropical eels (Anguilla marmorata, A. bicolor and A. mossambica) in the western Indian Ocean, based on partial nucleotide sequences of the mtDNA control region (n = 107 samples) and the nuclear GTH2b gene (n = 91 samples) for individuals collected from two freshwater sys

A database of zooplankton biomass in Australian marine waters.

Zooplankton biomass data have been collected in Australian waters since the 1930s, yet most datasets have been unavailable to the research community. We have searched archives, scanned the primary and grey literature, and contacted researchers, to collate 49187 records of marine zooplankton biomass from waters around Australia (0-60°S, 110-160°E). Many of these datasets are relatively small, but when combined, they provide >85 years of zooplankton biomass data for Australian waters from 1932 to the present. Data have been standardised and all available metadata included. We have lodged this da

Phylogeography of the trumpetfishes (Aulostomus): ring species complex on a global scale.

The distribution of circumtropical marine species is limited by continental boundaries, cold temperate conditions, and oceanic expanses, but some of these barriers are permeable over evolutionary time scales. Sister taxa that evolved in separate ocean basins can come back into contact, and the consequences of this renewed sympatry may be a key to understanding evolutionary processes in marine organisms. The circumtropical trumpetfishes (Aulostomus) include a West Atlantic species (A. maculatus), an Indian-Pacific species (A. chinensis), and an East Atlantic species (A. strigosus) that may be t

Bluefin tuna reveal global patterns of mercury pollution and bioavailability in the world's oceans.

Bluefin tuna (BFT), highly prized among consumers, accumulate high levels of mercury (Hg) as neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). However, how Hg bioaccumulation varies among globally distributed BFT populations is not understood. Here, we show mercury accumulation rates (MARs) in BFT are highest in the Mediterranean Sea and decrease as North Pacific Ocean > Indian Ocean > North Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, MARs increase in proportion to the concentrations of MeHg in regional seawater and zooplankton, linking MeHg accumulation in BFT to MeHg bioavailability at the base of each subbasin's food web. Upside-down swimming: in situ observations of inverted orientation in Gigantactis, with a new depth record for the Ceratioidei.

This note reports on eight observations of inverted swimming behavior by species of ceratioid whipnose anglerfishes in the genus Gigantactis, from the Caribbean, tropical east Atlantic, tropical western Indian Ocean, the north-east and north-west Pacific and south-west Pacific. It covers four putative species and strongly suggests that this is the normal behavior for the genus. A possible reason is briefly discussed. In addition, a new depth record of 5866 m for the ceratioid anglerfish is recorded.

On the reasons and quantified prevalent ocean atmosphere roles for the intensification and genesis features of the ESCS Tauktae.

Tauktae was an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) that occurred in the Arabian Sea (AS) during 14-19 May 2021. The present study investigates the prevalent role of the ocean/atmosphere on the genesis and intensification of it, and causative ocean-met factors from a climatological and current perspective; and tries to understand the reason of intensification though it was close (~ 140 km) to the coast. In general, the climatological Genesis Potential Index (GPI) is higher off the Indian west coast during the cyclone seasons, in which, low-level absolute vorticity (ABV) and mid-tropospheric

Intercomparison of regional loss estimates from global synthetic tropical cyclone models.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) cause devastating damage to life and property. Historical TC data is scarce, complicating adequate TC risk assessments. Synthetic TC models are specifically designed to overcome this scarcity. While these models have been evaluated on their ability to simulate TC activity, no study to date has focused on model performance and applicability in TC risk assessments. This study performs the intercomparison of four different global-scale synthetic TC datasets in the impact space, comparing impact return period curves, probability of rare events, and hazard intensity distribu

Brominated flame retardants and dechlorane plus in the marine atmosphere from Southeast Asia toward Antarctica.

The occurrence, distribution, and temperature dependence in the marine atmosphere of several alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs), Dechlorane Plus (DP) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated during a sampling cruise from the East Indian Archipelago toward the Indian Ocean and further to the Southern Ocean. Elevated concentrations were observed over the East Indian Archipelago, especially of the non-PBDE BFR hexabromobenzene (HBB) with concentrations up to 26 pg m(-3) which were found to be related to continental air masses from the East Indian Archipelago. New observations of fluorescent organisms in the Banda Sea and in the Red Sea.

Fluorescence is a widespread phenomenon found in animals, bacteria, fungi, and plants. In marine environments fluorescence has been proposed to play a role in physiological and behavioral responses. Many fluorescent proteins and other molecules have been described in jellyfish, corals, and fish. Here we describe fluorescence in marine species, which we observed and photographed during night dives in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, and in the Red Sea, Egypt. Among various phyla we found fluorescence in sponges, molluscs, tunicates, and fish. Our study extends the knowledge on how many different organ

Pelopscreadium aegyptense n. gen., n. sp. and Pelopscreadium spongiosum (Bray & Cribb, 1998) n. comb., (Digenea: Lepocreadiidae), each from disjunct populations of the Yellow boxfish, Ostracion cubicus Linnaeus (Ostraciidae).

Bianium spongiosum Bray & Cribb, 1998 (Lepocreadiidae), described from the yellow boxfish, Ostracion cubicus Linnaeus (Ostraciidae), off Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia, possesses a combination of the following three morphological features which distinguishes it from all the other species currently assigned to the genus: (1) large internal patches of large cells forming sponge-like pads we have termed "pelops"("pelop" sing.) laterally in the forebody extending from near the anterior extremity to about the level of the intestinal bifurcation rather than possessing a scoop; (2) ceca that re

Dynamics of turbidity in gypsum-precipitating brines: The case of the Red Sea - Dead Sea project.

Authigenic processes in aqueous environments, such as mineral precipitation, can create turbidity which may have undesired effects on the natural environment and in industrial processes. Turbidity is often used to monitor such environments, as a mean to determine water quality and to follow the industrial processes. However, turbidity develops and grows or dissipates with time as the processes underlying its development advance. This dynamic nature of turbidity has yet to be studied. The proposed pilot Red Sea - Dead Sea project (RSDSP) is to desalinate seawater from the Gulf of Aqaba/Eilat an

Cryptic species of Archinome (Annelida: Amphinomida) from vents and seeps.

Since its description from the Galapagos Rift in the mid-1980s, Archinome rosacea has been recorded at hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Only recently was a second species described from the Pacific Antarctic Ridge. We inferred the identities and evolutionary relationships of Archinome representatives sampled from across the hydrothermal vent range of the genus, which is now extended to cold methane seeps. Species delimitation using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) recovered up to six lineages, whereas concatenated datasets (COI, 16S, 28S and ITS1

Marine hybrid hotspot at Indo-Pacific biogeographic border.

Studying hybridization is crucial to understanding speciation and almost all our knowledge comes from terrestrial and freshwater environments. Marine hybrids are considered rare, particularly on species-rich coral reefs. Here, we report a significant marine hybrid zone at Christmas and Cocos Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) with 11 hybrid coral reef fishes (across six families); the most recorded hybrids of any marine location. In most cases, at least one of the parent species is rare (less than three individuals per 3000 m(2)), suggesting that hybridization has occurred because individuals of t

Plate tectonic history and ocean oxygenation shaping biogeography of hydrothermal bacterial community.

The influence of plate tectonics on microbial distributions remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the global biogeography of hydrothermal vent-endemic chemoautotrophic microbiota is structured by the tectonic history of the global major oceans. These microbiota, particularly anaerobic ones, are significantly more abundant in early-origin Pacific, Arctic, and Mediterranean oceans, whereas they are notably scarce in late-formed Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This pattern was attributed to the timing of ocean formation and its interplay with global redox evolution. Fully oxygenated co

Structure and Genetic Variability of the Oceanic Whitetip Shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, Determined Using Mitochondrial DNA.

Information regarding population structure and genetic connectivity is an important contribution when establishing conservation strategies to manage threatened species. The oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, is a highly migratory, large-bodied, pelagic shark listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List as "vulnerable" throughout its range and "critically endangered" in the western north Atlantic. In 2014, the species was protected globally under Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), limiting and regulating

Seafloor marine litter density and distribution in the Jordanian Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea.

Anthropogenic marine litter, particularly plastics, has become a pervasive pollutant in marine ecosystems, posing risks to biodiversity and ecosystem health. In this study, we analyzed HD videos collected along eight transects during OceanX's deep-sea research mission in Aqaba, 2022, surveying approximately 4 km of seabed in the Jordanian coastline of the Gulf of Aqaba to quantify the density of seafloor anthropogenic marine litter. The surveyed depth varied between 200 and 850 m, and litter was observed at all depths in the eight selected sites. The litters were classified into eight differen

A new species of Fusigobius (Teleostei: Gobiidae) from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The gobiid species, Fusigobius humerosus sp. nov., is described based on 12 type and 18 non-type specimens collected from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters. The new species was formerly misidentified with F. humeralis: both are characterised by a semitranslucent body; head and body with numerous small dusky orange-yellow spots; a round black spot in humeral region just above base of pectoral fin; and a black spot subequal to pupil diameter at midbase of the caudal fin. However, Fusigobius h

First report of yellow-banded tissue loss disease on coral reefs outside the Arabian/Persian Gulf.

Coral disease is a major cause of coral reef degradation, yet many diseases remain understudied. Yellow-banded tissue loss disease (YBTLD) has a distinct gross lesion morphology and to date has only been reported from the Arabian/Persian Gulf; little else is known about the ecology of the disease. We report on the first occurrence of YBTLD outside of the Arabian/Persian Gulf at 2 sites (Laku Point, Narara Reef) within the Gulf of Kachchh (GoK) located on the northwest coast of India. At Narara Reef, YBTLD was observed at 12 out of 24 transects with an average prevalence of 4.7 ± 1.3%. At Laku

Does Bacillus velezensis Strain RP137 from the Persian Gulf Really Produce an Aminoglycoside?

It has recently been published that an aminoglycoside, S‑137‑R, is produced by a newly isolated Bacillus velezensis strain RP137 from the Persian Gulf (Pournejati et al. in Curr Microbiol 76:1028-1037, 2019). However, the analytical data presented by the authors do not allow for a structure elucidation. The data does not even prove that the authors studied an individual compound in terms of analytics and biological activity. The purity of the substance S-137-R is severely doubted because the analytics is inadequate. The molecular mass cannot be assigned on the basis of the published mass spect
