Infant behavioral assessment and intervention program in very low birth weight infants improves independency in mobility at preschool age.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of the Infant Behavioral Assessment and Intervention Program(©) (IBAIP) in very low birth weight infants on sensory processing and daily activities at preschool age. STUDY DESIGN: Follow-up of children included in a randomized controlled trial. Eighty-six infants were enrolled in post-discharge IBAIP until 6 months corrected age, and 90 infants received standard care. At 3.5 years of age, the Sensory Profile-Dutch version (SP-NL) and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Dutch version (PEDI-NL) were administered. For comparison, parents of 41 term-bor

Mother-infant interactive processes and infant behavioral and vagal stress recovery: Associations at 3, 6, and 9 months of age.

Mother-infant interactive processes, including matching social behaviors and repairing interactive ruptures, are proposed to foster infant stress functioning. However, little is known about the extent to which the concurrent relations between these dyadic processes and infant behavioral and vagal stress recovery change over the first year of life. In this study, 116 mother-infant dyads (55 girls) from a midwestern city in the United States completed the still-face paradigm at 3, 6, and 9 months. Using microcoding of infant and maternal behaviors (i.e., facial expressions, vocalizations, and ga

Long-term effects of infant attachment organization on adult behavior and health in nursery-reared, captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

This research traces the long-term effects on health, well-being, personality, and behavior of adult chimpanzees as a function of their attachment to a primary human caregiver assessed when they were 1 year of age. Of the 46 chimpanzees assessed at 1 year of age, we assessed health in 43 individuals, adult behavior in 20 individuals, and adult well-being and personality in 21 individuals. Attachment disorganization was found to be a significant predictor of stereotypic rocking in adult chimpanzees, F(1, 18) = 7.50, p = .013. For those subjects (N = 24) with a full 20 years (birth through age 2

Serotonin transporter expression is predicted by early life stress and is associated with disinhibited behavior in infant rhesus macaques.

Serotonin transporter (5-HTT) expression patterns may contribute to the risk for adverse psychological outcomes following early life stress. The present study investigated whether two types of early life stress, maternal and social aggression, and a serotonin transporter gene promoter polymorphism (rh5-HTTLPR) predicted lower post-stressor peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) 5-HTT expression in infant rhesus macaques. We further probed the relationships among these factors and infant behavioral disinhibition within a stressful situation. Fifty-three infants residing with mothers in large,

Heterogeneity of the infant stage of rat development: inflammatory pain response, depression-related behavior, and effects of prenatal stress.

The infant stage of rat development is a very important period for potential correction of adverse consequences produced by negative prenatal events. However the age limit for this correction needs to be investigated. The last prenatal and first two weeks after birth are "critical" for maturation of the nociceptive and emotional systems. Clinical observations suggest a correlation between persistent pain response and emotional behavior. In infant male rats of different ages, we studied indices of the inflammatory pain response (the number of flexes+shakes in the formalin test), depression-rela

The Stress of Being Left Out: Physiological and Behavioral Responses to Ostracism in Preverbal Infants.

Being ostracized is a stressful experience that affects behavioral and physiological reactivity in adults. However, evidence regarding its impact early in life remains limited. This study investigated whether inclusion or exclusion during a ball-tossing game influenced physiological and behavioral reactivity in 8-month-old infants (N = 59; 24 girls and 35 boys). It also explored whether parent-infant interaction dynamics and parental mind-attuned comments modulate infants' physiological responses, fostering greater adaptation to the social context. Results highlighted that excluded infants sho

Application of Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning to Identify Infants' Abnormal Suckling Behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Identify infants with abnormal suckling behavior from simple non-nutritive suckling devices. BACKGROUND: While it is well known breastfeeding is beneficial to the health of both mothers and infants, breastfeeding ceases in 75 percent of mother-child dyads by 6 months. The current standard of care lacks objective measurements to screen infant suckling abnormalities within the first few days of life, a critical time to establish milk supply and successful breastfeeding practices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A non-nutritive suckling vacuum measurement system, previously developed by the a

Behavior of weight z-score in preterm infants who are small for gestational age.

Introduction: the follow-up of small for gestational age (SGA) preterm infants is critical due to their differentiated postnatal growth pattern. Objective: to investigate the weight z-score behavior in SGA preterm infants during a four-week stay in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Methods: a retrospective longitudinal study with data from nutritional anamneses of 190 preterm infants admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit between January/2017 and December/2019, classified according to nutritional status at birth as either SGA or appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Linear regression was us

Infants' stress responses and protest behaviors at childcare entry and the role of care providers.

During the transition from home to childcare, 70 15-month-old infants were videotaped, and their negative emotions were rated. Infants' attachments to mothers were assessed prior to child care entry and to care providers five months later using the Strange Situation Procedure (SSP). Infant heart rate was monitored at home, during adaptation to childcare (mothers present), and during subsequent separations. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was computed from the beat-to-beat measures of heart rate to reflect vagal tone, which is reduced during chronic states of stress, and was collected upon A

Associated Mechanisms of Goal Directed Behavior in Infants and Young Children with Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Early goal-directed behavior is an important area of cognitive development for long-term outcomes in typical development yet is substantially disrupted in Down syndrome (DS). While motor abilities, visual attention, and haptic perception are established associated mechanisms of early goal-directed behavior in typical development, there has been minimal investigation into these as mechanisms of goal-directed behavior in children with DS. The aim of the present study was to examine fine motor, gross motor, visual attention, and haptic perception as associated mechanisms of two types

Cardiac arrest in infants, children, and adolescents: long-term emotional and behavioral functioning.

UNLABELLED: Very little is known about the psychological consequences of a cardiac arrest (CA) during childhood. Our aim was to assess long-term emotional and behavioral functioning, and its predictors, in survivors of CA in childhood. This long-term follow-up study involved all consecutive infants, children, and adolescents surviving CA in a tertiary-care university children's hospital between January 2002 and December 2011. Emotional and behavioral functioning was assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Teacher's Report Form (TRF), and Youth Self-Report (YSR). Of the eligible 107

Effect of late-onset fetal growth restriction on organization of behavioral state in infants.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze whether late-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR) alters regulatory capability in infants, and whether this can be detected using both the neonatal behavior assessment scale (NBAS) and brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP). METHODS: The diagnosis of FGR was made on Doppler examination in the third trimester of pregnancy. NBAS and BAEP measurement were performed at 1 month of corrected postnatal age. RESULTS: The group with late-onset FGR was integrated with 17 infants and the control group consisted of 14 subjects. The NBAS range of stat

Perspectives from the symposium: The role of nutrition in infant and toddler brain and behavioral development.

This symposium examined current trends in neuroscience and developmental psychology as they apply to assessing the effects of nutrients on brain and behavioral development of 0-6-year-olds. Although the spectrum of nutrients with brain effects has not changed much in the last 25 years, there has been an explosion in new knowledge about the genetics, structure and function of the brain. This has helped to link the brain mechanistic pathway by which these nutrients act with cognitive functions. A clear example of this is linking of brain structural changes due to hypoglycemia versus hyperglycemi

Facilitating postural control: effects on the reaching behavior of 6-month-old infants.

In this study, 3-D kinematic as well as 2-D videorecordings were made of the reaching behavior of infants aged about 6 months who were not yet able to sit. Detailed analyses of these recordings were directed toward specifying the effects of providing additional postural support to the lower body on the spatial and temporal features of such behavior. To detect these effects, reaching and associated head movements in this modified condition were compared to those made while the infants sat in an age-appropriate and commercially available chair lacking the supplementation of support for the pelvi

Behavioral and physiological characteristics of Indian and Chinese-Indian hybrid rhesus macaque infants.

Strain differences in temperament and physiology have been reported for several animal species, but nonhuman primates have not been well studied in this regard. We assessed behavioral and physiology in Chinese-Indian hybrid (n = 13) and Indian-origin (n = 29) nursery-reared rhesus monkey infants. Previous data indicate that Chinese-origin and Chinese-Indian hybrid rhesus exhibit more aggression directed toward humans and conspecifics and are more irritable in response to neonatal assessment procedures than are Indian-derived rhesus. In addition, in rhesus adults, low levels of cerebrospinal fl

Premature infant responses to noise reduction by earmuffs: effects on behavioral and physiologic measures.

The continuous high-intensity noise in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is both stressful and harmful for the premature infant. Although some researchers have found evidence that loud noise can cause hearing loss and alter physiologic and behavioral responses, no study to date has investigated the benefits of noise reduction by the use of earmuffs. In this study earmuffs were placed over the premature infants' ears to reduce noise intensity in the NICU while physiologic and behavioral responses were measured. Two sites were used to collect data: in the first setting, 17 low birth weight

Functional and behavioral responses as marker of illness, and outcome in infants under 2 months.

Value of abnormal findings on 11 functional and behavioral items were studied for identification of serious illness, presence of bacteremia and prediction of the outcome (recovery or death) in infants upto 2 months of age. All the items were graded on a 3 point scale (0, 1 and 2) in the ascending order of severity. A total of 116 infants who were being evaluated for suspected sepsis were enrolled. The assessment was completed before detailed history and physical examination. Significant associations were observed between presence of serious illness and six items by lambda2-test and/or Pearson'

Effects of different ways of covering the eyes on behavior of jaundiced infants treated with phototherapy.

This study was performed to determine whether covering the eyes with an opaque screen over the head end of the bassinet instead of the normal patch would improve the behavioral organization of jaundiced, but otherwise healthy, term infants treated with phototherapy. 38 matched infants were randomly assigned to have a patch or a screen. Serum bilirubin at the time of observation was 11.2-17.5 mg/100 ml (mean = 13.7, patch) and 9.4-16.4 mg/100 ml (mean = 13.4, screen). 19 infants, of whom 11 were jaundiced (6.2-14.3 mg/100 ml, mean = 10.3), served as control subjects. Infant Regulatory Problems and Subsequent Behavioral Difficulties: The Mediating Role of Parenting Stress.

Background/Objectives: Infant regulatory problems (RPs) are at risk of persisting and can contribute to later behavioral difficulties. Parenting stress has been identified as a risk factor associated with child RPs, but its mediating role has rarely been investigated in this context. The aim of the study was (1) to investigate whether RP symptoms were related to subsequent infant RP symptoms/toddler behavioral and emotional problems (BEPs) between two pediatric check-ups in the first 3 years of life and (2) to investigate the potential role of parenting stress as a partial mediator in the asso

Early motor behavior reflects neurologic involvement in infants with congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) demonstrate early differences in brain development and are at increased likelihood for neurodevelopmental delays. Spontaneous motor behavior reflects early neurologic function but remains poorly characterized in CHD. OBJECTIVE: To compare spontaneous motor behavior between infants with CHD and typically developing infants using Motor Optimality Score-Revised (MOS-R) and to examine clinical factors associated with motor performance in infants with CHD. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, 202 infants with CHD and 49 typica
