Formula for the progressive reintroduction of fat into breast milk in infants with chylothorax.

Chylothorax in infants is a potentially life-threatening condition, often resulting from injury during cardiac surgery. Traditionally, breastfeeding is discontinued. Recently, feeding with defatted human milk has been safely introduced. However, methods for fat reintroduction are not standardized. We developed a mathematical formula to facilitate individualized, progressive reintroduction of fat into skimmed breast milk. Fat and protein content were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Defatting was performed by centrifugation at 3000 rpm at 2°C for 15 min. The formula c

Effects of soy-containing infant formulas on thyroid gland in rats.

BACKGROUND: Effects of soy-containing infant formulas on the thyroid gland is not clear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of infant formulas with different quantities of soy content on the functional and histopathological characteristics of the thyroid gland. METHODS: Twenty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 was fed with standard pellet rat food (8 g/day); group 2 soy-free infant formula (8 g/day); group 3 low-dose (1.12 g/100 mL) soy-containing formula (8 g/day), and group 4 high-dose (2.64 g/100 mL) soy-containing formula (8 g/day). Blood samples were c

Dicarboxylic Acid Excretion in Normal Formula-Fed and Breastfed Infants.

PURPOSE: Infant formulas are often supplemented with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) to optimize calories for small for gestational age or preterm infants. High amounts of MCTs have been associated with an increase in dicarboxylic acid (DCA) in the urine. Elevated DCA in the urine is also a clinical indicator for fatty acid metabolism disorders. The purpose of this study was to identify if there is an amount of MCTs that can be provided without elevating urinary DCA excretion. METHODS: A metabolic screening laboratory provided urinary DCA excretion data for 175 infants. It was verified that

Ghrelin, leptin and the neurometabolic axis of breastfed and formula-fed infants.

UNLABELLED: The possible long-term effects of prolonged breastfeeding in preventing obesity have led to the reconsideration of different growth curves of breastfed and formula-fed infants in the light of haematochemical markers. Leptin, ghrelin, insulin-like growth factors and other compounds may not only represent mediators involved in the metabolism of fat tissues, but may also potentially be able to explain the complex relationships between the gastrointestinal tract and the hypothalamic regulation of the sense of hunger and satiety. CONCLUSION: Diet-related differences in the circulating

Feeding responses to free-flow formula in term and preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: Although introducing freely flowing formula into the infant's mouth is a common feeding practice, its effect on feeding behavior is largely unknown. We evaluated the effects of free flow of formula from the nipple on infant feeding activity (sucking, swallowing, ingestion rate) and documented potential adverse behaviors such as cough, restless behavior, drooling, apnea, and bradycardia. METHODS: We studied 13 preterm and 7 term infants. During a feeding, bottle pressure was adjusted every 2 to 3 minutes to increase or decrease free flow from the nipple. RESULTS: Increase in free

Zinc and copper in infants fed breast-milk or different formula.

In 129 term infants at birth and at the age of 4 months, zinc and copper concentrations of plasma and urine were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the values correlated to other biochemical parameters and somatic data. Of the infants, 49 were exclusively breast-fed, 44 fed with various commercially available cow's milk formula, 35 fed with a hypoallergenic formula (cows's milk whey hydrolysate, commercially available, supplemented with zinc and copper). Plasma zinc values declined from birth to the age of 4 months in all three groups (P < 0.001). In formula

Technical aspects of phosphorus reduction and mineral adaptation in infant formulae.

Adapted milk-based formulae are complex products which simulate the protein and mineral composition of breast milk. The desired casein-to-whey protein ratio (40:60) in these formulae could be obtained by mixing cow's milk and whey. Unfortunately, this would yield formulae with too high a mineral content and a very unfavourable Ca:P ratio. The adjustment of the mineral content and the Ca:P ratio is the most sophisticated step in manufacture of such formulae. For this purpose, whey is demineralized with ion-exchange resins, electrodialysis or a combination of both processes. The demineralized wh

Effect of formula feeding on oral absorption of caffeine in premature infants.

The systemic absorption of orally administered caffeine was evaluated in 16 premature infants receiving therapy for recurrent apnea. An oral bolus dose of caffeine (10 mg/kg) was given during a fasted state (n = 8) or immediately preceding formula (n = 8). The first-order absorption rate constant (ka) was estimated from the rise in the plasma concentration-time curve and extent of absorption was estimated by the area under the concentration-time curve. Therapeutic concentrations of caffeine were achieved rapidly followed by very slow elimination of drug. No difference between the fasted and fe

A comparative trial of casein or whey-predominant formulae in healthy infants.

This study compared two infant formulae, one casein-predominant, Vitamilk and the other whey-predominant, Nurture. The nutritional components of Nurture were modified to be more similar to breast milk. This was a six week prospective double blind study of 100 healthy infants whose mothers had decided to bottle feed. The infants receiving Nurture showed significantly greater weight gain (p less than 0.005) and growth in head circumference (p less than 0.05) than those given Vitamilk. Analysis of the red cell membrane fatty acid profiles of the two groups showed significant differences which ref

A modified cows' milk formula suitable for low birthweight infants.

Low birthweight babies fed standard modified cows' milk formulae are at risk from the high fluid intake needed for adequate nutrition, and very preterm babies often develop late hyponatraemia if the sodium intake fails to match large renal losses. A new cows' milk formula (Cow and Gate Prematalac) provides 120 kcal, 3.6 g protein, 7.5 g fat, and 4 mmol sodium in 150 ml. Ten low birthweight babies were fed the new formula at 150 ml/kg a day and compared with 12 similar babies fed a standard modified cows' milk formula (Wyeth SMA Gold Cap) at 180 ml/kg a day. All the babies grew at intrauterine

Cross-Sectional Analysis of Infant Diet, Outcomes, Consumer Behavior and Parental Perspectives to Optimize Infant Feeding in Response to the 2022 U.S. Infant Formula Shortage.

UNLABELLED: In May of 2022, millions of U.S. parents encountered uncertainty in safely feeding their infants due to the infant formula shortage. METHODS: An anonymous, electronic, cross-sectional, retrospective survey was used. RESULTS: U.S. parents (n = 178) whose infants were ~10 weeks old during the shortage completed the survey. Of parents, 81% switched formulas during the shortage, 87% switched because they could not find the formula they typically used, 34% switched 3-5 times, 29% of parents visited ≥4 stores/24 h and 26% of parents traveled >20 miles/24 h to purchase formula. Anti-regurgitation infant formulas and antacid medication: match or mismatch?

UNLABELLED: A perceived need for treatment has led to the development and widespread marketing of various anti-regurgitation (AR) infant formulas, promoted as effective solutions for managing regurgitation symptoms. For practice, limited comparative data exists on the specific thickening agents, or the relative thicknesses of AR formulas. An added concern is that some infants on AR formulas simultaneously receive pharmacological treatments for reflux, such as antacids or gastric acid inhibitors, and no information about compatibility is available. One reference formula (Nutrilon® Profutura 1,

Mental Health and Feeding Styles in Parents of Formula-Fed Infants.

Background: Nonresponsive feeding styles can contribute to rapid weight gain in infancy and subsequent obesity in childhood. There is a need to investigate factors such as parental mental health symptoms (stress, depression, and anxiety) that may contribute to nonresponsive feeding styles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental mental health symptoms and feeding styles in parents of healthy, term formula-fed infants during the first year of life. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was employed using online surveys. We recruited

Effects of Formula Milk Feeding in Premature Infants: A Systematic Review.

The preterm baby is born at a critical period for the growth and development of the gastrointestinal and neuromotor systems. Breast milk is the food of choice for infants during the first months of life, as it provides multiple short- and long-term benefits to preterm and sick newborns. Despite this, breastfeeding is often nutritionally insufficient, requiring the addition of fortifiers. In other cases, it is important to ensure the necessary nutrients and calories, which can be provided by formula milk or pasteurized and fortified donated human milk. However, the specific guidelines for the u

Thickened Formulas Used for Infants with Dysphagia: Influence of Time and Temperature.

Infant dysphagia is commonly managed using thickened formulas. Substantial research investigates thickening of a variety of beverages for adults and children, yet few studies address the unique considerations of thickened formula for infants. Understanding the consistency and behaviour of thickened formula will guide clinicians and parents to make informed decisions to minimise risk of aspiration. To investigate the effect of time and storage temperature on the flow properties of thickened formula, four formulas and two thickeners currently utilised at a major metropolitan children's hospital

A new formula for premature infants: effects on growth and nutritional status.

OBJECTIVE: Nutritional management influences immediate survival as well as subsequent growth and development of low birth weight and very low birth weight infants. Preterm infant formula (PTF) is used when there is an inadequate supply of mother's milk or when the mother is unable to breastfeed and donor breast milk is unavailable. The purpose of this prospective multicenter study was to evaluate short-term effects on nutritional status (auxological and biochemical parameters) in a population of premature infants who received a preterm infant formula. METHODS: Ninety-seven preterm infants wit

Presence of soil-dwelling clostridia in commercial powdered infant formulas.

OBJECTIVE: Because Clostridium botulinum was isolated from powdered infant formula (PIF) fed to an infant in the United Kingdom who subsequently developed infant botulism and from unopened PIF from the same manufacturer, we tested PIF manufactured in the United States for the presence of clostridial spores. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty PIF ingested by 19 California infants with botulism within 4 weeks of onset of illness (48% of all patients fed PIF during study) in 2006-2007 were cultured anaerobically to isolate clostridia. All isolated clostridia were identified to the species level and enumerated

Differential modulation of the immune response by breast- or formula-feeding of infants.

Spontaneous integrin expression on CD4+, CD8+ and CD19+ lymphocytes at 6 months was significantly lower in breastfed than formula-fed infants (p < 0.05). In another study of 59 formula-fed and 64 breastfed 12-month-old children blast transformation and cytokine production by lymphocytes, and T cell changes were measured before and after measles-mumps-rubella vaccination (MMR). The effect of hypo-allergenic formulas in infants at risk of allergic disease.

Development of atopic disease seems to depend on both genetic factors and exposure to several environmental factors. At present ther is evidence that the mode of early infant feeding influences the development of food allergy, whereas daily exposure to inhalant allergens and daily exposure to tobacco smoke is found to be associated with an increased risk of recurrent wheezing/asthma and inhalant allergy. In infants with atopic predisposition (first-degree relatives), exclusively breastfeeding > or = four months is found associated with a significant reduction of the cumulative prevalence of co
