Effect of Austerity Measures on Infant Mortality: Evidence From Greece.

Governments frequently adopt austerity policies when facing economic crises, yet their long-term consequences for population health remain incompletely understood. This paper examines the impact of large-scale fiscal austerity on infant mortality by exploiting the Troika-led economic adjustment program implemented in Greece beginning in 2010 as a quasi-experimental shock. Using the synthetic control method, we construct a counterfactual for Greece based on OECD and Union for the Mediterranean countries that did not experience austerity of comparable depth or duration. Relative to this counterf

Social inequities impact infant mortality due to congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how educational, economic, and racial residential segregation may impact congenital heart disease infant mortality (CHD-IM). STUDY DESIGN: This is a population-based US ecological study. METHODS: This study evaluated linked live birth-infant death files from the National Center for Health Statistics for live births from 2006 to 2018 with cause of death attributed to CHD. Maternal race and education data were obtained from the live birth-infant death files, and income data were obtained from the American Community Survey. A spatial social polarization measure termed th

Beyond birth outcomes: Interpregnancy interval and injury-related infant mortality.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined the association between IPI and birth outcomes, but few have explored the association between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and postnatal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between IPI and injury-related infant mortality, a leading cause of postneonatal mortality. METHODS: We used 2011-2015 US period-linked birth-infant death vital statistics data to generate a multiyear birth cohort of non-first-born singleton births (N = 9 782 029). IPI was defined as the number of months between a live birth and the start of the pregnancy leading to

[Antenatal corticosteroid therapy and late preterm infant morbidity and mortality].

INTRODUCTION: Late preterm infants (34-36 weeks gestation) have a morbidity rate significantly higher than those born at term. However, few interventions have been undertaken to reduce this increased morbidity and mortality. Antenatal corticosteroid administration could be an effective preventive measure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the morbidity associated with late prematurity in our institution, and determine if there are differences between those who received antenatal corticosteroids. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on late pret

[Infant mortality from birth defects in Costa Rica, 1981-2010].

OBJECTIVE: Identify trends for different types of birth defects and their impact on infant (IMR) and neonatal (NMR) mortality rates in Costa Rica from 1981 to 2010. METHODS: Infant, neonatal, and postneonatal mortality trends were analyzed, using data from the Central American Population Center, which uses the International Classification of Diseases, versions 9 and 10, to classify causes of death. For each group of birth defects, a Poisson log-linear regression model was constructed. IMR and NMR, relative risk, and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated for the three decades (1981-

Exploration and innovation in addressing maternal, infant and neonatal mortality.

The Government of Nepal has been remarkably progressive in introducing innovative community-based maternal newborn and child health interventions in an effort to address the major causes of maternal and child mortality in the country. This article describes the introduction of innovative interventions, including a review of the landmark research that precipitated the discussion and provided evidence of practical feasibility, the acceptance of the intervention concept and validity, the approval process and the introduction and results from the pilot interventions. These interventions, which inc

Alcohol drinking pattern during pregnancy and risk of infant mortality.

BACKGROUND: The safety of small amounts of alcohol drinking and occasional binge-level drinking during pregnancy remains unsettled. We examined the association of maternal average alcohol intake and binge drinking (>or=5 drinks per sitting) with infant mortality, both in the neonatal and postneonatal period. METHODS: Participants were 79,216 mothers who were enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort in 1996-2002, gave birth to a live-born singleton, and provided information while they were pregnant on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Information on infant mortality and causes of death

A genetic reason for male excess in infant respiratory mortality?

UNLABELLED: Male infants have a 50% higher risk of death from respiratory diseases and a number of congenital heart diseases that can lead to cerebral hypoxia. The most important of these diseases are infant respiratory distress syndrome and sudden infant death syndrome. CONCLUSION: The mechanism behind the excess peri-mortality rate in male infants is not known. A genetic factor leading to reduced tolerance to hypoxia is possible.

Social deprivation and the causes of stillbirth and infant mortality.

AIMS: To investigate the relation between social deprivation and causes of stillbirth and infant mortality. METHODS: Stillbirths and infant deaths in 6347 enumeration districts in Wales were linked with the Townsend score of social deprivation. In 1993-98 there were 211 072 live births, 1147 stillbirths, and 1223 infant deaths. Poisson regression analysis was used to estimate the magnitude of effect for associations between the Townsend score and categories of death by age and the causes of death. The relative risk of death between most and least deprived enumeration districts was derived. R

Socioeconomic correlates of infant mortality in Hong Kong, 1979-93.

Although Hong Kong's infant mortality is among the lowest in the world, there may still be subgroups in the population with unusually high and possibly avoidable mortality rates. We conducted an ecological study on the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and infant mortality in Hong Kong by using government data from three periods: 1979-83, 1984-88 and 1989-93. The study population comprised all infant births in 65 modified districts in Hong Kong in the period 1979-93. Infant, neonatal and post-neonatal mortality rates (IMRs, NMRs and PNMRs) were used as the health indicators. An F

Predictors of operative mortality and morbidity after infant heart transplantation.

We retrospectively analyzed the impact of recipient, donor, and operative factors on the operative mortality and morbidity of 36 consecutive infant heart transplantations. Operative survival was excellent at 94%. Among 34 survivors, operative morbidity in 12 patients included acute severe allograft failure with or without prolonged ventilatory support. The cohort was characterized by age less than 4 months (32 of 36), a diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (29 of 36), and the use of circulatory arrest (27 of 36); these variables were colinear and could not be used to predict operative

Disparities in Infant Mortality by Race Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Infants.

OBJECTIVES: U.S.-born Hispanic infants have a well-documented health advantage relative to other minority groups. However, little published research has examined racial heterogeneity within the Hispanic population, in relation to health outcomes. The current study aims to explore possible implications of racial identification for the health of U.S. born Hispanic compared to non-Hispanic infants. Methods Data were drawn from 2007 to 2008 NCHS Cohort Linked Live Birth-Infant Death Files, restricted to deliveries of Hispanic black, Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black (NHB) and non-Hispanic white m

The neighbourhood method for measuring differences in maternal mortality, infant mortality and other rare demographic events.

In the absence of reliable systems for registering rare types of vital events large surveys are required to measure changes in their rates. However some events such as maternal deaths are widely known about in the community. This study examined the utility of asking respondents about events in their neighbourhood as an efficient method for measuring relative rates of rare health events such as maternal and infant deaths. A survey was conducted in the health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) in Matlab, Bangladesh, which includes two areas with different health care regimes. Adult women

Antiracism and positive intergenerational (infant) outcomes: A county-level examination of low birth weight and infant mortality.

Racism is associated with negative intergenerational (infant) outcomes. That is, racism, both perceived and structural, is linked to critical, immediate, and long-term health factors such as low birth weight and infant mortality. Antiracism-resistance to racism such as support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement-has been linked to positive emotional, subjective, and mental health outcomes among adults and adolescents. To theoretically build on and integrate such past findings, the present research asked whether such advantageous health correlations might extend intergenerationally to inf

Infant mortality and causes of infant deaths in rural Ethiopia: a population-based cohort of 3684 births.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made large-scale healthcare investments to improve child health and survival. However, there is insufficient population level data on the current estimates of infant mortality rate (IMR) in the country. The aim of this study was to measure infant mortality rate, investigate risk factors for infant deaths and identify causes of death in a rural population of northern Ethiopia. METHODS: Live births to a cohort of mothers under the Kilite Awlaelo Health and Demographic Surveillance System were followed up to their first birthday or death, between September 11, 2009 and S

Evaluation of non-specific effects of infant immunizations on early infant mortality in a southern Indian population.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between receipt of routine childhood immunizations and infant mortality before 6 months of age. METHODS: This was an observational study of 10,274 infants, in a randomized trial of vitamin A supplementation, who received the study dose and survived to at least 1 week of age. The primary outcome was mortality before 6 months of age, analysed in Cox regression models as a function of vaccine receipt and gender. RESULTS: Receipt of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) or diphtheria, tetanus, polio (DTP) vaccine was associated with signifi
