Effects of improved on-farm crop storage on DNA methylation of mothers and their infants: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1. We further analyzed whether anthropometrics, stress, and mental

Little evidence for long-term harm from antenatal corticosteroids in a population-based very low birthweight young adult cohort.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) given to mothers with anticipated very preterm delivery are widely used and improve infant outcomes. Follow-up studies of the first trials of ACS have shown no adverse effects, but recently there have been concerns about possible longer-term harms. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the relationship of ACS therapy to a range of physical health and welfare measures in a cohort of very low birthweight (VLBW; <1500 g) young adults. METHODS: Population-based cohort follow-up study. All VLBW infants born in New Zealand in 1986 were included in a prospective

Expanded health data from the new birth certificate, 2005.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents data for 2005 on checkbox items exclusive to the 2003 U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth. Information is shown for checkboxes in the following categories: Risk factors in this pregnancy, Obstetric procedures, Characteristics of labor and delivery, Method of delivery, Abnormal conditions of the newborn, and Congenital anomalies of the newborn. These categories are included on both the 1989 and the 2003 U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth; however, many of the specific checkbox items were modified, or are new to the 2003 certificate. Data on selected new

Tuberculin responses in children with allergic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of allergic disorders has been increasing over the last 30 years, especially in developed countries. One factor associated with this rise may be the decline of many childhood infections. We investigated tuberculin responses in allergic children in order to see the development of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to tubercule bacillus infection. METHODS: The study sample was composed of 106 allergic and 100 nonallergic children vaccinated with bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). The standard Mantoux test was applied to all children. The reactions were read after 72

Preterm birth and mortality and morbidity: a population-based quasi-experimental study.

IMPORTANCE: Preterm birth is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. However, previous studies have been unable to rigorously examine whether confounding factors cause these associations rather than the harmful effects of being born preterm. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the extent to which the associations between early gestational age and offspring mortality and morbidity are the result of confounding factors by using a quasi-experimental design, the sibling-comparison approach, and by controlling for statistical covariates that varied within families. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

Layered risk factors for sudden unexpected infant death.

BACKGROUND: Sudden Unexpected Infant Death occurs about once a week in Cook County, Illinois, the second largest county in the United States, where SUID disproportionately affects families from high hardship communities. The Cook County SUID Case Registry was established in 2019 to collect, analyze, and disseminate data to advance SUID prevention. METHODS: Cook County SUID Case Registry data from 2019 to 2023 were analyzed for descriptive characteristics including infant age, race, ethnicity, gestational age, birth weight, maternal age, prenatal/household smoke exposure, and sleep environment

Anthropometric, biochemical, dietary, morbidity and well-being assessments in women and children in Indonesia, India and Senegal: a UKRI GCRF Action Against Stunting Hub protocol paper.

INTRODUCTION: Child stunting has a complex aetiology, especially in the first 1000 days of life. Nutrition interventions alone have not produced expected impacts in reducing/preventing child stunting, indicating the importance of understanding the complex interplay between environmental, physiological and psychological factors influencing child nutritional status. This study will investigate maternal and child nutrition, health and well-being status and associated factors through the assessment of: (1) anthropometry, (2) biomarkers of nutrition and health status, (3) dietary intakes, (4) fetal

Subcutaneous body fat in pregnant New Zealand women: association with wheeze in their infants at 18 months.

To investigate the association of subcutaneous body fat levels in pregnant women with wheezing in their 18 month old infants. A prospective study of European and Polynesian volunteers (n = 369) recruited from northern New Zealand were visited in months 4 and 7 of pregnancy when height, weight, and triceps, biceps and costal skinfolds were measured, and questionnaires determining personal details administered; and again visited 18 months after birth when infants were measured and questions on infant feeding and wheeze administered. At 18 months 32 % of infants had wheezed in the past 12 months.

Impact of Antenatal Corticosteroids on Cortisol and Glucose Homeostasis Levels in Preterm Neonates: A Meta-Analysis.

Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are widely used to reduce respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm neonates, enhancing neonatal outcomes. However, the potential effects of ACS on other aspects of neonatal health, such as cortisol levels and glucose regulation, remain a concern. This study examines whether ACS administration impacts cortisol and glucose homeostasis in preterm infants by analyzing data from 14 selected studies. Using a random-effects model, we found no significant impact of ACS on cortisol levels (mean differences (MD) 2.23, confidence interval (CI) 5.26 to -0.80) or blood

'If We Are to Believe the Psychologists …': Medicine, Psychoanalysis and Breastfeeding in Britain, 1900-55.

In 1942, the British Minister of Health commissioned a report from the newly established Advisory Committee on Mothers and Young Children into 'What can be done to intensify the effort to secure more breast feeding of infants?'. To make their case, the members of the sub-committee put in charge of the report sought expert testimony on the benefits of breastfeeding. They consulted medical officers of health, maternity and child-welfare officers, health visitors, midwives, obstetricians, paediatricians and a physician in private practice. They also consulted five 'psychologists' (a contemporary

FOOD NEGLECT AND INFANT DEVELOPMENT.

The impact of food insecurity on child development in the general U.S. population is well-established, yet little is known about the harm of food neglect relative to other types of maltreatment. Due to the harmful physiological impact of inadequate nutrients and the social impact of food-related stress, it was hypothesized that food neglect would be more likely to impair infant cognitive and language development than physical abuse, sexual abuse, and other forms of neglect. Families of infants (N = 1,951) investigated by Child Protective Services were studied using the second cohort of the Nat

Exposure to environmental risk factors and parenting attitudes among substance-abusing women.

This study examined the amount of exposure to negative environmental risks and their association with parenting attitudes among a group of inner city substance-abusing women. Mothers (N = 198) were recruited at delivery and were part of a randomized longitudinal intervention study for substance-abusing women and their infants. When the infants were 18 months old, a cumulative environmental risk score was calculated for each mother based on nine factors: violence (both domestic and environmental), depression, homelessness, incarceration, number of children, life stress, psychiatric problems, an

Short-term outcomes of centralization on surgical care for patients with anorectal malformations: retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare centralized the surgical care of patients with anorectal malformations from four to two centres in 2018. This retrospective review compares short-term complications after anorectal reconstruction before and after centralization. METHODS: Hospital records of all infants in Sweden who underwent reconstruction of an anorectal malformation between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2023 were reviewed and divided in two 5-year periods: before and after centralization. The main outcomes were unplanned readmissions and surgical procedures requiring g

Leading from behind the scenes: Community birth attendants, the unsung heroines of childhood vaccination in Ibadan urban slum communities.

Community birth attendants (CBAs) represent an insufficiently integrated resource in childhood immunization programs, particularly in urban slum communities where healthcare access remains challenging. Their role as birth attendants has been well documented, however, understanding their role in infant vaccination uptake is crucial for improving immunization uptake and child welfare. This study explored the knowledge of CBAs about infant immunization and assessed their roles in promoting vaccination uptake in urban slum communities of Ibadan, Nigeria. A narrative study design was employed acros

Family-school relationship in the Italian infant schools: not only a matter of cultural diversity.

BACKGROUND: The family-school relationship is a crucial component in achieving the optimum scholastic experience of pupils. Such a relationship is often described in somewhat reductive binary terms of collaboration/non-collaboration. However, the significant presence of families from different cultural backgrounds in Italy since the 1990s demonstrates how multiple types of rapport with schools can generate effective styles of relationship. Infant schools constitute a privileged location where such dynamics can be investigated. Firstly, because they exhibit the highest percentage of families th

Benin City mothers: their beliefs concerning infant feeding and child care.

One hundred and forty-three mothers residing in a representative area of Benin City were interviewed concerning their beliefs about child care, nutrition, and sources of information related to child care. Although all the mothers believed that breast-feeding was a natural procedure which should start from birth, they were not aware of the importance of breast milk to the baby. 58.7 per cent of the mothers would introduce artificial milk within the first month of life, and only 19.6 per cent would give breast milk alone for the first three months. Kwashiorkor was not widely believed to be relat

The eye in child abuse.

Child physical abuse may result in a range of injuries to the globe and surrounding tissues. These injuries have varying degrees of specificity for abuse, and no pattern of injury is unique to abuse. Easily overlooked eye injuries in non-ambulatory infants often portend more severe abuse and require careful evaluation for occult injury when they are unexplained. Retinal hemorrhages are most often a sign of significant trauma and the severity of the hemorrhages generally parallels the severity of neurological trauma. Ophthalmologists contribute important data that more easily distinguish medica

[Long-term health effects of breastfeeding].

During the last decade there has been increasing interest in possible long-term benefits of breastfeeding for health and development. Most relevant studies published from the second half of 2001 to 2006 suggest that breastfeeding is likely to protect against later obesity, type 1 diabetes, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases and childhood cancer. Also, breastfeeding seems to have beneficial effects on later cardiovascular risk factors. A positive association between breastfeeding and cognitive development continues to be the most consistent and important effect, whereas the effect of
