OBJECTIVES: To investigate signs of infection and infection-related complications of apical periodontitis (AP) in patients who underwent chemotherapy for lymphoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from the dental and medical records of patients receiving chemotherapy for lymphoma. Based on the findings from a dental evaluation made in conjunction with chemotherapy, the patients were divided into two groups, patients with or without teeth with AP.
RESULTS: Eighty-six of the 213 patients had one or more teeth with AP and received no planned dental treatment for this c

In aging humans, tooth loss is a predictor of decreased longevity. Tooth loss is mainly caused by dental caries and periodontal disease. Pulpitis refers to inflammation of the dental pulp caused by bacterial infection secondary to dental caries. It is accompanied by severe toothache and has infectious disease-associated pathophysiology. Pulpitis is mainly treated by pulpectomy, which is aimed at removing the infected dental pulp and controlling pain by removing nociceptive nerve fibers. However, teeth without dental pulp have a poor prognosis. In this report, we proposed a novel "super minimal

Guidelines on cross-infection control recommend the wearing of operating gloves by dental practitioners whilst carrying out routine examinations and treatment on all patients. However, there are a number of dermatological problems that may be associated with the routine wearing of protective gloves in dental practice. This paper describes the aetiology and clinical features of three types of contact dermatitis, ie irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and contact urticaria. The management of these skin conditions is discussed. Advice is given concerning routine handcare for

Legionella pneumophila is an opportunistic bacterial respiratory pathogen that is one of the leading causes of drinking water outbreaks in the United States. Dental offices pose a potential risk for inhalation or aspiration of L. pneumophila due to the high surface area to volume ratio of dental unit water lines-a feature that is conducive to biofilm growth. This is coupled with the use of high-pressure water devices (e.g., ultrasonic scalers) that produce fine aerosols within the breathing zone. Prior research confirms that L. pneumophila occurs in dental unit water lines, but the associated

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration is responsible for enforcing worker safety regulations in the state of California. The infection control regulation, while the best known to dentists, is only one of many that affect every dental practice. The past two years have brought significant changes to Cal/OSHA rules. This paper reviews some of the current regulations that apply to dental offices.

Dental infections, such as apical Periodontitis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis (PI), are closely associated with specific bacterial species, including Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), and Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), among others. Antibiotics are extensively utilized for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes in the treatment of dental infections and other dental-related issues. Unfortunately, the rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance has accompanied the increased use of antibiotics in recent years. Specific bacterial pathogens h

This report is not an attempt to provide a comprehensive review of HIV infection, AIDS, and infection control. Rather it has highlighted some of the medical, ethical and legal aspects associated with the AIDS dilemma which are of significance to the dental profession. There would appear to be few if any valid professional reasons which a dentist may use to avoid treating an HIV infected or AIDS patient. In fact, dentists adopting such an attitude may be subject to litigation. From a research perspective, it is feasible that continuing monitoring of the oral manifestations of AIDS and its assoc

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases worldwide. Dental plaque and saliva are major reservoirs for this microorganism, and some studies have shown that oral‒oral transmission is possible through close contact between physicians and dentists and their patients. This study aimed to investigate the occupational risk of gastrointestinal H. pylori infection among physicians and dentists.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to May 1st 2025. Irrelevant articles were excluded in three s

The most frequent dental infections happen when bacteria enter the pulp and spread to the tissues. Dental caries arise from the dissolution of enamel and dentin by the acidic metabolites of oral streptococci. Dissolution leads to cavitation, which allows oral germs to enter the bloodstream. If left untreated, cavitation develops into bacterial invasion of the dental pulp. Dental plaque, also called dental biofilm, is associated with periodontitis. When the pulp is exposed, significant inflammation and necrotic foci occur as bacteria infect the tissue. Intravascular bacteria were identified in

With the onset of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the dental treatment of patients at risk of infection has become quite challenging. In view of this, patients with head and neck cancer may present with oral complications due to anticancer therapy, making dental assistance necessary. Thus, the objective of the study was to review the literature and critically discuss important concerns about the treatment of patients with head and neck cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because dental professionals are in close contact with the main viral transmission routes, this study pres

Control of acute pain in oral and maxillofacial surgery is important for patient care and comfort. Oral surgical procedures are associated with tissue injury and inflammation. Acute pain can arise directly from a surgical procedure or from problems such as dental caries, infection, perforation of maxillary sinus, pericoronitis, and jaw fractures. The major factor in acute pain management is deciding on an appropriate intervention and/or analgesics that will provide the best pain relief. Multimodal pain control has taken a leading role in effectively managing acute pain. This article covers the

INTRODUCTION: The role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, pericoronitis, and periapical infections has been well-established. However, the variation in the severity and prognosis of these lesions could suggest a potential role of other microorganisms, such as viruses and fungi. This study aims to evaluate the presence of adenovirus, human papillomavirus-16, Epstein-Barr virus, Candida, and non-Candida fungi in these infections.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study including 120 healthy adult patients presenting with dental infections requiring dental extractions were conducted

The stable prevalence of infective endocarditis since the advent of antibiotic prophylaxis for patients at-risk reflects the increasing polymicrobial etiology of such infections not associated with dental procedures. In addition to concerns for the growing crisis for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the need for controlled clinical trials to determine the continued efficacy of prophylactic regimens for endodontic and other dental procedures cannot be overstated.

Disinfection is a crucial aspect of patient care in dentistry. In the pre-19th century era, natural elements like acids, sulfur, mercury, and various alkaline metals were valued for their ability to obliterate pathogens. More recently aerosols, sprays, and disinfectant wipes with more powerful chemicals including quaternary ammonium compounds and aldehydes have become popular. As aerosols fall out of favor due to their health and environmental risks, disinfectant wipes are becoming the most trusted form of clinical sanitization. This article explores the history as well as the current practice
