Lessons learned from Vietnam's first COVID-19 vaccine rollout: tackling vaccine hesitancy and misinformation for future pandemic responses.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy and misinformation significantly undermine pandemic preparedness. Insights from the COVID-19 vaccine rollout can inform and enhance future pandemic responses. During Vietnam's Delta outbreak in 2021, the vaccine rollout faced significant challenges including limited vaccine supply and public vaccine hesitancy, which impeded widespread coverage. OBJECTIVES: This study examined levels of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, common information sources, exposure to negative vaccine-related information, and intentions to promote vaccination among the Vietnamese public. METHOD

'COVID impacted my life in so many ways': a qualitative study of the lived experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic among people of Black ethnicities living with HIV in England.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 disproportionately affected people of Black ethnicities whilst also negatively affecting the health, wellbeing and livelihoods of people living with HIV. This may have been amplified by pre-existing socioeconomic marginalisation, poorer health, and structural racism. Despite being disproportionately affected by the pandemic, little is known about lived experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic within these communities. Given these disparities, this paper explores the lived experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic among people living with HIV and of Black ethnicities in England. DE

The Role of Digital Health Equity Audits in Preventing Harmful Infodemiology.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities persist and are influenced by digital transformation. Although digital tools offer opportunities, they can also exacerbate existing inequalities, a problem amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the related infodemic. Health equity audit (HEA) tools, such as those developed in the United Kingdom, provide a framework to assess equity but require adaptation for the digital context. Digital determinants of health (DDoH) are increasingly recognized as crucial factors influencing health outcomes in the digital era. OBJECTIVE: This editorial proposes an approach to ex

Association between autoimmune diseases and COVID-19 as assessed in both a test-negative case-control and population case-control design.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 epidemic has paralleled with the so called infodemic, where countless pieces of information have been disseminated on putative risk factors for COVID-19. Among those, emerged the notion that people suffering from autoimmune diseases (AIDs) have a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: The cohort included all COVID-19 cases residents in the Agency for Health Protection (AHP) of Milan that, from the beginning of the outbreak, developed a web-based platform that traced positive and negative cases as well as related contacts. AIDs subjects were defined ad having one th

Toxicity on Social Media During the 2022 Mpox Public Health Emergency: Quantitative Study of Topical and Network Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Toxicity on social media, encompassing behaviors such as harassment, bullying, hate speech, and the dissemination of misinformation, has become a pressing social concern in the digital age. Its prevalence intensifies during periods of social crises and unrest, eroding a sense of safety and community. Such toxic environments can adversely impact the mental well-being of those exposed and further deepen societal divisions and polarization. The 2022 mpox outbreak, initially called "monkeypox" but later renamed to reduce stigma and address societal concerns, provides a relevant context

[Psychological and psychopathological issues of conspiracy theories: From the COVID-19 health crisis to the existential crisis].

OBJECTIVES: Research on conspiracy theories (CT) has increased significantly in recent years. Studies come from various disciplines in the field of the humanities and social sciences. They show in particular that adherence to CT rebounds at every moment of "crisis". The health crisis we are experiencing is no exception: COVID-19 pandemic entails an "infodemic", according to Tedros Ghebreyesus, General Director of the World Health Organization. Indeed, we are witnessing the production, and international dissemination, of false informations, including conspiracy explanations of the coronavirus a

Digital Health Literacy and Web-Based Information-Seeking Behaviors of University Students in Germany During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital communication technologies are playing an important role in the health communication strategies of governments and public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The internet and social media have become important sources of health-related information on COVID-19 and on protective behaviors. In addition, the COVID-19 infodemic is spreading faster than the coronavirus itself, which interferes with governmental health-related communication efforts. This jeopardizes national public health containment strategies. Therefore, digital health literacy is a key competence t

Constituents' Inferences of Local Governments' Goals and the Relationship Between Political Party and Belief in COVID-19 Misinformation: Cross-sectional Survey of Twitter Followers of State Public Health Departments.

BACKGROUND: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, social media have influenced the circulation of health information. Public health agencies often use Twitter to disseminate and amplify the propagation of such information. Still, exposure to local government-endorsed COVID-19 public health information does not make one immune to believing misinformation. Moreover, not all health information on Twitter is accurate, and some users may believe misinformation and disinformation just as much as those who endorse more accurate information. This situation is complicated, given that elected officials may pursue

Information Pathways and Voids in Critical German Online Communities During the COVID-19 Vaccination Discourse: Cross-Platform and Mixed Methods Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, the messaging app Telegram (Telegram FZ-LLC) served as a tool to organize protests against public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. A community of diverse groups formed around these protests, which used Telegram to discuss and share views outside of the general public discourse and mainstream information ecosystem. This increasingly included conspiracy theories and extremist content, propagated by sources that opposed the mainstream positions of the government and traditional media. While the use of such sources has been thoroughly investigated, the role of

BACKGROUND: The development of COVID-19 vaccines has been crucial in fighting the pandemic. However, misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines is spread on social media platforms at a rate that has made the World Health Organization coin the phrase infodemic. False claims about adverse vaccine side effects, such as vaccines being the cause of autism, were already considered a threat to global health before the outbreak of COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to synthesize the existing research on misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines spread on social media platforms and its effects. T
