Representation of long COVID syndrome in the awareness of the population is revealed by Google Trends analysis.

In some COVID-19 patients, symptoms persist for several weeks and sometimes, after the acute disease phase, these patients develop new symptoms, which then represents a transition into the so-called long COVID. The exact demarcation of the terms and generally applicable definitions are still discussed, but the phenomenon is most commonly referred to as long COVID. In this study, Google Trends data have been used to track levels of public awareness for long COVID and some important symptoms during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this analysis clearly demonstrate the public i

Mapping Infodemic Responses: A Geospatial Analysis of COVID-19 Discourse on Twitter in Italy.

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified concerns about misinformation, sparking interest in the field of infodemiology, which examines the spread and impact of information on public health perceptions. This research examines how geographic location influenced COVID-19 discourse across 10 Italian cities by analyzing geographically tagged Twitter data. Our network analysis of 4792 high-degree nodes identifies key information spreaders and community structures, while spatiotemporal mapping reveals regional variations in information patterns and influential narratives. Results demonstrate significant ge

Time-series analysis of vitiligo-related online search behavior in response to ambient air pollutants.

Ambient air pollutants are hazardous materials posing significant risks to global public health. While their impacts on respiratory and cardiovascular systems are well-established, their role in triggering specific autoimmune skin diseases remains under-explored. This study investigates the temporally resolved public health response to air pollutant exposure, using the autoimmune condition vitiligo as a sensitive health endpoint. We aimed to evaluate the differential public health responses to six major air pollutants by analyzing their lagged effects on vitiligo-related online search behavior

Infodemic Versus Viral Information Spread: Key Differences and Open Challenges.

As we move beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk of future infodemics remains significant, driven by emerging health crises and the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in the information ecosystem. During periods of apparent stability, proactive efforts to advance infodemiology are essential for enhancing preparedness and improving public health outcomes. This requires a thorough examination of the foundations of this evolving discipline, particularly in understanding how to accurately identify an infodemic at the appropriate time and scale, and how to distinguish it from other pr

The Information Void in Asymptomatic Chronic Disease: A Digital Health Framework for Understanding Social Media Health Information Seeking in Young Adults.

Nearly 1 in 4 young adults has a chronic condition, yet many feel well despite their diagnosis. Asymptomatic conditions such as prediabetes and hypertension create a unique vulnerability to digital health misinformation, particularly on platforms where inaccurate content is prevalent. Conventional clinical responses, which often just warn patients about online misinformation, fail to address the underlying drivers of this behavior. This viewpoint proposes a novel disease characteristic-based vulnerability framework to understand this challenge, grounded in established behavioral science theori

Public concerns about human metapneumovirus: insights from Google search trends, X social networks, and web news mining to enhance public health communication.

The respiratory virus known as human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is linked to seasonal outbreaks and primarily affects elderly people and young children. Infodemiology, which uses digital data sources, including social media, online news, and search trends, is a useful substitute for monitoring public concerns and risk perceptions because surveillance gaps and underreporting impede public health interventions despite their clinical value. To assess public search interest, we analyzed global search behavior between June 1, 2024, and June 1, 2025, and examined over 1.3 million tweets collected during
