Literacy and Public Health: Why America's Reading Crisis is a National Health Emergency.

Literacy is a foundational determinant of health that influences an individual's ability to acquire, understand, evaluate, and apply information throughout life. Recent national assessments demonstrate significant declines in reading proficiency among both children and adults in the United States, raising concerns that extend beyond education into public health. Literacy and health literacy are closely linked to healthcare navigation, preventive health behaviors, chronic disease management, employment opportunities, and informed decision-making. At the same time, rapid technological change has

[Health Literacy Among German Health Professionals-To-Be - Exploratory Pilot Study].

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy is defined as the ability to collect, understand, evaluate and use health information. Previous studies have shown that the German population has only an average level of health literacy. Health professionals such as nurses, doctors or midwives need to be health literate themselves to promote patients' health literacy, as well as to protect and promote their own health. So far, there is a lack of research about health literacy among health professionals in Germany. The objective of this study was to assess the health literacy of health professionals. METHOD: The stu

Examining Health Literacy Levels in Homeless Persons and Vulnerably Housed Persons with Mental Health Disorders.

Health care use is high in persons who are homeless and vulnerably housed, but their health literacy (ability to read and understand health information) is often not known. The purpose of this study was to determine health literacy rates in a Canadian population of homeless and vulnerably housed individuals with mental health disorders. Higher levels of health literacy were associated with being housed, higher levels of education, non-psychotic mental health diagnoses and lower levels of drug use. This suggests that health literacy may be a potential barrier for accessing and utilizing health

Exploring Health Literacy and the Correlates of Pap Testing Among African Immigrant Women: Findings from the AfroPap Study.

African immigrant (AI) women have low rates of Pap testing. Health literacy plays a pivotal role in health behaviors. Sources and types of health information could shape health literacy and inform the Pap testing behaviors of AI women. However, the influences of health literacy, sources, and types of health information along with cultural and psychosocial correlates on the Pap testing behaviors of AI women are poorly understood. To examine how sources and types of health information impact health literacy, and in turn, how health literacy and cultural and psychosocial factors influence the Pap

Assessment of readability level of Turkish websites on gingival recession.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the readability level (RL) and textual content quality (TCQ) of Turkish websites providing information about "gingival recession" (GR) to understand their implications for public health, specifically concerning health literacy and access to care. Ensuring online health information is accessible is crucial for promoting informed decision-making and preventive health behaviors. BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional and assessment of RL and TCQ on Turkish websites. SUBJECTS: After excluding ineligible websites, a total of 46 websites about GR obtained from the f

Return of Value in the New Era of Biomedical Research-One Size Will Not Fit All.

Background: There is a growing interest in creating large-scale repositories that store genetic, behavioral, and environmental data for future, unspecified uses. The All of Us Research Program is one example of such a repository. Its participants will get access to their personal data and the results of the studies that used them. However, little is known about what researchers should return to participants and how they should do it in a way that is valuable and meaningful to participants. Methods: To better understand the concept of "return of value" and the practice of returning valuable stu

Assessment of readability and content of patient-initiated google search results for epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa describes a group of conditions commonly characterized by fragile skin and blistering of the mucosal membranes. Due to the complex and rare nature of the disease, we sought to evaluate the quality and readability of epidermolysis bullosa information available online. Analysis of the top 50 search results on Google demonstrated that information by non-dermatologists was of a lower reading level and more accessible when compared to information by dermatologists, even though dermatologist written information was more likely to be useful and medically comprehensive. There is

The association of electronic health literacy with behavioural and psychological coronary artery disease risk factors in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention: a 12-month follow-up study.

AIMS: Fundamental roadblocks, such as non-use and low electronic health (eHealth) literacy, prevent the implementation of eHealth resources. The aims were to study internet usage for health information and eHealth literacy in patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Further, we aimed to evaluate temporal changes and determine whether the use of the internet to find health information and eHealth literacy were associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors at the index admission and 12-month follow-up of the same population. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective lon

Enhancing digital health literacy in adolescents: evaluation of a co-designed educational app.

BACKGROUND: With more people turning to the unregulated environment of the internet for health information, digital health literacy is increasingly important to assess trustworthiness of online health information. Adolescents' digital health literacy has long been overlooked because of the false assumption that they possess advanced skills due to being raised in a digital age. It is important that adolescents are given opportunities to develop their digital health literacy, however there is a lack of relevant educational resources, especially self-directed online resources. With adolescents, w

Organizational Health Literacy as a Tool for Health Equity: Application in a High-Risk Infant Follow-Up Program.

BACKGROUND: Healthy People 2030 emphasizes personal health literacy (individual skills) and organizational health literacy-the degree to which organizations equitably enable individuals to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. However, research on the latter is in the early stages. METHODS: This study describes an organizational health literacy assessment in a U.S. urban academic children's hospital. Mental health literacy and help-seeking: the mediating role of self-stigma and emotional intelligence.

When faced with mental health concerns, help-seeking can be a useful means to seek and receive help from formal support sources-such as mental health professionals, as well as informal support sources-such as friends and family. Both the intention and tendency to engage in formal help-seeking are predicted by mental health literacy, self-stigma, and emotional intelligence; however, the role that each of these factors play in relation to informal help-seeking is less clear. The current study examined the predictive value of mental health literacy with respect to both formal and informal help-se

Low health literacy impact on headache diagnosis.

Health literacy has a broad range of impacts, including whether and where a person seeks treatment and how well that patient interprets and applies clinical recommendations. Patients with headache may not seek treatment, may fail to disclose even severe pain to their physician, and may not understand or adhere to treatment. Universal precautions can be a helpful initial approach, and information styles can be modified as needed over time. Patients should be asked about headache and explanations about headache causes and treatment should be given in everyday language. The teach-back method can

AI Health Literacy: a reflective framework for LLM-based generative AI in public health education and promotion.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how citizens search for, understand, and use health information. Large language models (LLMs) can simplify, translate, summarize, and tailor health-related content to individual questions. At the same time, AI-generated responses may appear fluent, plausible, and empathic without necessarily being complete, up to date, evidence-based, or suitable for a person's individual situation. This creates a public health challenge for Public Health Education and Promotion, as AI-generated answers may increasingly shape how citizens access, interpret, a

Searching for Answers: Health Literacy and Digital Navigation in Midlife and Older Adults.

As digital, internet-based health communication becomes more common, understanding the factors influencing midlife and older adults' ability to navigate online resources is essential. This study investigated whether health literacy interacts with communication format to affect health search performance. Seventy-eight community-dwelling midlife and older adults classified as having high or low health literacy using the Newest Vital Sign completed a counterbalanced print- and internet-based health search task. A 2 × 2 mixed-factorial analysis of variance revealed that both lower health literacy
