Public information-seeking about orthopedic surgical robotics: a decade-scale infodemiological analysis and forecast through 2030.

Public information-seeking is an underused indicator of the diffusion of robotic-assisted surgery, yet no study has compared it jointly across the three highest-volume orthopedic domains or projected it toward the coming decade. Using Google Trends relative search volume (RSV: a term's share of all searches in a given month, rescaled 0-100 against the highest month of the study window, and not a count of searches) retrieved programmatically (Health category, worldwide, January 2014-June 2026; 150 monthly observations per term), we quantified and forecast public search interest in robotic knee,

Public Search Behavior and Tuberculosis Cases in Indonesia 2019-2023: An Infodemiology Study Using Google Trends .

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health challenge in Indonesia, which ranks second globally in 2024. As the 2030 elimination target approaches, gaps in early detection and public education persist. The public's tendency to seek health information online before consulting professionals presents an opportunity to leverage infodemiology for public health surveillance. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between multi-term Google search trends and annual TB report data in Indonesia to disseminate the potential use of digital search data as a complementary indicator

Online searching can lead to internet fixation without reducing metacognitive confidence.

Research has shown that searching for information online can increase a person's likelihood to search for other information online, a phenomenon known as the Internet Fixation Effect. In the current study, we conducted four experiments examining the boundary conditions of the Internet Fixation Effect and whether it can be attributed, at least in part, to how online searching affects metacognitive judgments. We replicated the Internet Fixation Effect but failed to find any evidence that it can be attributed to participants becoming less confident in what they know and can access internally. Ins

Search engines, news wires and digital epidemiology: Presumptions and facts.

BACKGROUND: Digital epidemiology tries to identify diseases dynamics and spread behaviors using digital traces collected via search engines logs and social media posts. However, the impacts of news on information-seeking behaviors have been remained unknown. METHODS: Data employed in this research provided from two sources, (1) Parsijoo search engine query logs of 48 months, and (2) a set of documents of 28 months of Parsijoo's news service. Two classes of topics, i.e. macro-topics and micro-topics were selected to be tracked in query logs and news. Keywords of the macro-topics were automatic

ChatGPT: A concise Google alternative for people seeking accurate and comprehensive carpal tunnel syndrome information.

Popular artificial intelligence systems, like ChatGPT, may be used by anyone to generate humanlike answers to questions. This study assessed whether ChatGPT version 3.5 (ChatGPTv3.5) or the first five results from a Google search provide more accurate, complete, and concise answers to the most common questions patients have about carpal tunnel syndrome. Three orthopedic hand surgeons blindly graded the answers using Likert scales to assess accuracy, completeness, and conciseness. ChatGPTv3.5 and the first five Google results provide answers to carpal tunnel syndrome questions that are similar

What are patients asking and reading online? An analysis of online patient searches for rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing rotator cuff surgery often search the internet for information regarding the procedure. One popular source, Google, compiles frequently asked questions and links to websites that may provide answers. This study provides an analysis of the most frequently searched questions associated with rotator cuff surgery. We hypothesize that there will be distinct search patterns associated with online queries about rotator cuff surgery that could provide unique insights into patient concerns. METHODS: A set of search terms were entered into Google Web Search using a clean

Rational inattention: A new theory of neurodivergent information seeking.

This paper presents rational inattention as a new, transdiagnostic theory of information seeking in neurodevelopmental conditions that have uneven cognitive and socio-emotional profiles, including developmental language disorder (DLD), dyslexia, dyscalculia and autism. Rational inattention holds that the optimal solution to minimizing epistemic uncertainty is to avoid imprecise information sources. The key theoretical contribution of this report is to endogenize imprecision, making it a function of the primary neurocognitive difficulties that have been invoked to explain neurodivergent phenoty

Impact of Sickle Cell Awareness Day on online health information seeking in Africa using Google Trends.

The United Nations Council Assembly recognized sickle cell disease (SCD) as a global public health problem due to its increasing burden, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. To raise awareness, a resolution was adopted, designating June 19th as SCD awareness day. However, the impact of this awareness day on online health information seeking behaviour (OHISB) in African countries is not well understood, especially in Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda where SCD prevalence is high. To assess the impact, the study used Google Trends data as a measure of OHISB for SCD. The analysis covered the 60 days befor

Health Information Seeking and Mental Health Support Utilization Among Individuals in U.S. Prisons.

This study examined factors influencing health information and mental health support seeking among individuals in U.S. prisons using the 2014 data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. Results showed that not only are age, race, health status, receiving health information (e.g., from health experts, friends, and other incarcerated individuals), and readiness to learn associated with health information seeking from the media, but so too are competencies such as literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. Years of education moderated the association betwe

How Patients With Cancer Use the Internet to Search for Health Information: Scenario-Based Think-Aloud Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer increasingly use the internet to seek health information. However, thus far, research treats web-based health information seeking (WHIS) behavior in a rather dichotomous manner (ie, approaching or avoiding) and fails to capture the dynamic nature and evolving motivations that patients experience when engaging in WHIS throughout their disease trajectory. Insights can be used to support effective patient-provider communication about WHIS and can lead to better designed web-based health platforms. OBJECTIVE: This study explored patterns of motivations and emotion

Are older Australians with chronic diseases online?

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Health information can be easily and cheaply provided through the Internet. However, we do not know whether older adults, those people most likely to be living with a chronic disease, are online or whether they use the Internet to find health information. METHODS: In order to establish the proportion of older Australians online, the impact of their current health status and chronic disease diagnosis on Internet usage and whether they use the Internet to search for health information, a paper-based survey was developed and mailed to 9000 older adults, resident in New South Wal

Growing Communicators: A Fine-Grained Analysis of Toddlers' Communicative Intentions From Requestive and Expressive, to Information Seeking and Giving.

Children readily respond to others' bids for communicative interactions from early childhood and actively initiate these themselves. However, the extent and variety of early child-initiated communicative intentions is poorly understood, with theoretically derived intentions lacking systematic empirical support from naturalistic observations. This study, using a cross-sectional data set, provides a fine-grained characterization of communicative behaviors across three time points in the second year of life (13, 18, and 23 months, N = 47). We coded one-hour-long video recordings of home observati

Navigating Knowledge: Effects of State Curiosity on Children's Word Learning and Information Seeking.

Early learning takes place within complex, multimodal environments where curiosity plays a critical role in guiding exploratory behaviors and supporting cognitive development. While trait curiosity shapes children's early learning experiences, state curiosity is context-dependent fostering early learning, in-part, through information seeking behaviors. Here, we explore whether state-induced curiosity can influence exploratory behaviors and facilitate word-learning within a multimodal search task that mirrors real-world learning environments. Children (2.5- to 4-year-olds) will be introduced to

Consumer experiences of long-term oral nicotine replacement therapy and related health information-seeking: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) delivers a therapeutic dose of nicotine to support smoking cessation, and is currently approved for short-term use (typically ≤12 weeks). Yet, research on real-world over-the-counter NRT use indicates that some consumers continue to use these products long-term. This study sought to understand consumers' experiences of long-term oral NRT use, including self-reported reasons for continued use, and health information-seeking regarding long-term use. METHODS: In-depth semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted between May and June 2021 with

Exploring the Use of Social Media for Medical Problem Solving by Analyzing the Subreddit r/medical_advice: Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The advent of the internet has transformed the landscape of health information acquisition and sharing. Reddit has become a hub for such activities, such as the subreddit r/medical_advice, affecting patients' knowledge and decision-making. While the popularity of these platforms is recognized, research into the interactions and content within these communities remains sparse. Understanding the dynamics of these platforms is crucial for improving online health information quality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantitatively analyze the subreddit r/medical_advice to characterize th

Perthes Disease: The Quality and Reliability of Information on the Internet.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that up to 89% of parents used the Internet to seek health information regarding their child's medical condition. Much of the information on the Internet is valuable; however, the quality of health information is variable and unregulated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and content of information about Perthes disease on the Internet using recognized scoring systems, identification of quality markers, and describe a novel specific score. METHODS: We searched the top 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and Bing) for the following keywords: "Perthe
