Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is characterized by repeated episodes of fever, peritonitis, pleuritis, and synovitis. We describe here 3 Japanese patients (a mother and 2 children) in whom FMF was diagnosed on analysis of MEFV. A 40-year-old woman presented with fever and abdominal pain. The patient had had these symptoms on and off since childhood and consulted many hospitals. A 38-year-old man had abdominal pain and fever since the age of 30 years. A 59-year-old woman had had episodes of fever, abdominal pain, and chest pain for more than 20 years. MEFV gene analysis showed compound hete

In 145 previously healthy non-critically ill young adults, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related symptoms, risk factors for thrombosis, coagulation and inflammatory parameters were compared, with 29 patients reporting unusual thrombotic events (UTEs) and 116 not having thrombotic events. The inflammatory indices, coagulation and prothrombotic platelet phenotype (PTPP) were significantly higher in patients with UTEs versus those without. Patients with UTEs were categorised according to detection of thrombophilic genes (TGs), coagulation and inflammatory markers to the non-TG and TG subcoh

We report two sisters affected with a unique disorder characterized by recurrent space-occupying brain lesions and retinal vasculopathy since their early twenties. Affection status was associated with abnormalities characteristic of Fanconi's anemia, i.e. aplastic anemia, microcephaly, short stature, an unusual face and pigmentation abnormalities of skin. In cytogenetic analyses performed in childhood signs of chromosome fragility or any chromosomal aberration were lacking. Histopathological examination of brain biopsy samples in both cases demonstrated identical histomorphological features of

Clinical guidelines recommend universal tumor screening (UTS) of colorectal and endometrial cancers for Lynch syndrome (LS). There are limited guidelines for how to integrate germline testing and somatic tumor testing after a mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) tumor is identified. We sought to characterize current practice patterns and barriers to preferred practice among clinical providers in high-risk cancer programs. A clinical practice survey was sent to 423 active members of the Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancer (CGA-IGC) with a follow-up survey sent t

If several relatives died with no will, the order of their deaths could affect the inheritance result. When the order of death is unknown, there are three approaches to determine the inheritance result in this simultaneous death situation: apply an inheritance method that is not affected by the order of death; artificially assign the order of death; stipulate that persons with unknown orders do not inherit each other. The last approach is adopted by the current French Civil Code (denoted as the French Approach). We prove that under some basic requirements, the French Approach is the only valid

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without palate (NSCL/P) is a prevalent birth defect that affects 1/500-1/1400 live births globally. The genetic basis of NSCL/P is intricate and involves both genetic and environmental factors. In the past few years, various genetic inheritance models have been proposed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of NSCL/P. These models range from simple monogenic inheritance to more complex polygenic inheritance. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the genetic inheritance model of NSCL/P exemplified by representative genes and regions from both monogenic an

The Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS, OMIM #255800) is an ultra-rare genetic disease characterized by myotonic manifestations combined with bone and cartilage abnormalities. Following an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, its prevalence is more significant in highly-inbred areas. The unraveling of the HSPG2 gene encoding a protein of the basal lamina enabled a better nosological delineation of the syndrome. The diagnosis is usually strongly suspected at the clinical level and then confirmed by molecular biology. To date, the treatment remains essentially symptomatic.

This critical and selective review synthesizes the accumulating body of biological evidence supporting a process we term epigenetic-genetic coupling as a mechanistic basis for Lamarckian inheritance of somatically acquired adaptations. We propose that evolutionary processes in mammals and higher vertebrates can involve deaminase-driven, reverse transcriptase-mediated, RNA-templated targeted homologous recombination. We contrast well-established examples of "Soft", reversible epigenetic inheritance with historical and contemporary evidence suggestive of stable, DNA-integrated "Hard" Lamarckian

Hirschsprung's disease is characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses of the gastrointestinal tract. Genetic dissection was successful as nine genes and four loci for Hirschsprung's disease susceptibility were identified. Different approaches were used to find these loci such as classical linkage in large families, identity by descent mapping in an inbred kindred, candidate gene approaches based on naturally occurring mutant mice models, and finally the use of model-free linkage and association analyzes. In this study, we review the identification of

BACKGROUND: Triploid Populus tomentosa, a timber tree species, has been widely planted in northern China owing to its potential high yields and high wood quality. Though genetic variances in growth traits and wood properties have been reported across several planting sites, regional testing of triploid hybrid clones of P. tomentosa has not been conducted on a large scale.
RESULTS: Ten 5-year clonal trials were used to evaluate the inheritance of growth traits, to determine suitable deployment zones, and to identify optimal triploid clones at each experimental site to determine the clones that

Artificial intelligence recommendations are sometimes erroneous and biased. In our research, we hypothesized that people who perform a (simulated) medical diagnostic task assisted by a biased AI system will reproduce the model's bias in their own decisions, even when they move to a context without AI support. In three experiments, participants completed a medical-themed classification task with or without the help of a biased AI system. The biased recommendations by the AI influenced participants' decisions. Moreover, when those participants, assisted by the AI, moved on to perform the task wi

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a highly atherogenic and heterogeneous lipoprotein that is inherited in an autosomal codominant trait. A unique aspect of this lipoprotein is that it is fully expressed by the first or second year of life in children, a pattern that is distinctly different from other lipoproteins, which typically only reach adult levels after adolescence. Despite decades of research, Lp(a) metabolism is still poorly understood but what is abundantly clear is that it is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Fruiting behaviour and sex form are important goals for Luffa breeders and this study aimed to shed light upon inheritance patterns for both these traits. The hermaphrodite form of Luffa acutangula (known as Satputia) is an underutilized vegetable with a unique clustered fruiting habit. Its desirable traits, such as plant architecture, earliness, as well as contrasting traits like unique clustered fruiting, bisexual flower, and crossability with Luffa acutangula (monoecious ridge gourd with solitary fruits), make it a potential source for trait improvement and mapping of desirable traits in Lu

Prion diseases in humans are neurodegenerative diseases which are caused by an accumulation of abnormal, misfolded cellular prion protein known as scrapie prion protein (PrPSc). Genetic, acquired, or spontaneous (sporadic) forms are known. Pathogenic mutations in the human prion protein gene (PRNP) have been identified in 10-15 % of CJD patients. These mutations may be single point mutations, STOP codon mutations, or insertions or deletions of octa-peptide repeats. Some non-coding mutations and new mutations in the PrP gene have been identified without clear evidence for their pathogenic signi

In recent years, we have seen an increasing amount of evidence pointing to the existence of a non-genetic heredity of the effects of events such as separation from parents, threat to life, or other traumatising experiences such as famine. This heredity is often mediated by epigenetic regulations of gene expression and may be transferred even across several generations. In this review, we focus on studies which involve transgenerational epigenetic inheritance (TEI), with a short detour to intergenerational studies focused on the inheritance of trauma or stressful experiences. The reviewed studi

In skeletal muscle, adiponectin has varied and pleiotropic functions, ranging from metabolic, anti-inflammatory, insulin-sensitizing to regenerative roles. Despite the important functions exerted by adiponectin, the study of the hormone in myopathies is still marginal. Myopathies include inherited and non-inherited/acquired neuromuscular pathologies characterized by muscular degeneration and weakness. This review reports current knowledge about adiponectin in myopathies, regarding in particular the role of adiponectin in some hereditary myopathies (as Duchenne muscular dystrophy) and non-inher

The exact genetic mechanism of inheritance of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) has been extensively investigated using family studies and other epidemiological methods, but to date no conclusive result has been reached. This may be due to the presence of a number of inheritance patterns, a number of different etiologies presenting as the same morphological condition, or complex gene-environment interactions. Indeed, a number of epidemiological factors have also been implicated in the etiology. While epidemiological studies can suggest inheritance patterns, only by identification of specif

Females and males may face different selection pressures, such that alleles conferring a benefit in one sex may be deleterious in the other. Such sexual antagonism has received a great deal of theoretical and empirical attention, almost all of which has focused on diploids. However, a sizeable minority of animals display an alternative haplodiploid mode of inheritance, encompassing both arrhenotoky, whereby males develop from unfertilized eggs, and paternal genome elimination (PGE), whereby males receive but do not transmit a paternal genome. Alongside unusual genetics, haplodiploids often exh
