Protection of articular cartilage by intra-articular injection of NEL-like molecule 1 in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis.

Several studies have proven the ability of NEL-like molecule-1 (Nell-1) to induce chondrogenesis and make it as a potential candidate for articular cartilage repair. In the current study, the chondroprotective effect of Nell-1 on osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was investigated by intra-articular injection. Bilateral partial discectomy was performed in 24 rabbits to induce TMJOA. Four weeks later, the right TMJ was treated with Nell-1 as the experimental group, whereas the left was treated with physiologic saline as the control group. Twelve rabbits each time were rand

Intra-articular injection of rebamipide prevents articular cartilage degeneration in murine post-traumatic osteoarthritis models.

Objectives: Rebamipide is a protective drug used for gastric mucosal injuries, and it also exerts protective effects for a variety of other tissues. In this study, murine post-traumatic (PT) osteoarthritis (OA) models in vivo and human OA chondrocytes in vitro were used to examine the effects of rebamipide on articular cartilage degeneration. Methods: Male BALB/c mice were used. The knee ligaments were transected in both knees. Mice were injected with rebamipide into the knee joint every week. Human chondrocytes were stimulated with IL-1β, then treated with or without rebamipide. The levels of

Intra-Articular Injections of Curcumin Monoglucuronide TBP1901 Suppresses Articular Cartilage Damage and Regulates Subchondral Bone Alteration in an Osteoarthritis Rat Model.

OBJECTIVE: Curcumin monoglucuronide (TBP1901) is highly water soluble and can convert to free form curcumin, which has pharmacological effects, on intravenous administration. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of TBP1901 intra-articular injections in an osteoarthritis (OA) rat model. METHODS: Sixty-four male Wistar rats (12 weeks old) who underwent destabilized medial meniscus (DMM) surgery were randomly separated into the TBP1901 injection or saline solution (control) injection group. They were sacrificed at 1, 2, 6, or 10 weeks postoperatively (weeks 1, 2, 6, and 10; n = 8 fo

Intra-articular injections of ozone versus hyaluronic acid for knee osteoarthritis: a level I meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intra-articular injections of ozone and hyaluronic acid (HA) are routinely performed for the management of knee osteoarthritis. The present meta-analysis compared intra-articular injections of HA versus ozone in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The outcomes of interest were to determine if intra-articular ozone injections show comparable visual analogue scale (VAS) and Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores compared to intra-articular HA injections. METHODS: This study was conducted according

Intra-articular Corticosteroid Injections in the Hip and Knee: Perhaps Not as Safe as We Thought?

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and knee is among the most common joint disorders. Intra-articular corticosteroid (IACS) injections are frequently performed to treat OA and other joint-related pain syndromes; however, there is conflicting evidence on their potential benefit. There is a lack of prospective and large retrospective studies evaluating potential joint findings, including increased risk for accelerated OA progression or adverse joint events, after treatment with IACS injection. Four main adverse joint findings have been structurally observed in patients after IACS injections: acceler

Synovial fluid detection in intra-articular injections using a bioimpedance probe (BIP) needle-a clinical study.

Intra-articular glucocorticoid injections are the recommended treatment for active arthritis, but accurate positioning of the needle may be challenging. Inexperienced physicians might decide not to inject because an unsuccessful injection impairs clinical outcome and may lead to complications; however, choosing not to inject may impair or delay the best possible treatment. Here, we address this problem by introducing a novel Bioimpedance Probe (BIP) Needle-guidance method that was tested in a clinical study. The BIP Needle was utilized for detection of synovial fluid. It measures real-time bio

Platelet-rich plasma intra-articular knee injections for the treatment of degenerative cartilage lesions and osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a simple, low-cost and minimally invasive method that provides a natural concentrate of autologous blood growth factors (GFs) that can be used to enhance tissue regeneration. In a previous analysis of a 12-month follow-up study, promising results were obtained when treating patients affected by knee degeneration with PRP intra-articular injections. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the persistence of the beneficial effects observed. METHODS: Of the 91 patients evaluated in the previous 12-month follow-up study, 90 were available f

Intra-articular corticosteroid injections in the foot and ankle: a prospective 1-year follow-up investigation.

UNLABELLED: Most evidence for the efficacy of intra-articular corticosteroids is confined to the knee, with few studies considering the joints of the foot and ankle. The aim of this study was to identify the long-term efficacy of corticosteroid injection in foot and ankle joints. All patients undergoing intra-articular corticosteroid injections into foot and ankle joints over a 10-month period were recruited into the study. Patients were asked to complete a foot-related quality of life questionnaire, namely the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score, immediately before intra-articular injection and at s

[Clinical studies of intra-articular injections of Arteparon. Retrospective study following the treatment of 754 patients].

Glycosaminoglycan polysulfate (GAGPS = Arteparon) is used for the treatment of degenerative joint diseases; it inhibits enzymes that dissociate ground substance, e.g. hyaluronidase, beta-glucuronidase, and acid phosphatase. In turn, an improved synthesis of hyaluronate from the synovial lining cells to hyaluronic acid increases viscosity (Verbruggen and Veys 1977). From January 1975 to December 1979, in the Orthopedic Division of the Clinic "St. Elizabeth" in Saarlouis, West-Germany, we treated 754 patients with a total of approximately 8000 intra-articular injections of Arteparon. The problem

Risk of adrenal insufficiency following intra-articular or periarticular corticosteroid injections among children with chronic arthritis.

Objectives Intra-articular and/or periarticular corticosteroid injection (IACI) is a common procedure in pediatric rheumatology. Despite many adult studies demonstrating a significant risk of adrenal insufficiency (AI) following the procedure, very little evidence is available in the pediatric literature regarding this risk. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of AI in children with chronic arthritis following IACI. Methods This is a retrospective study including children aged 0-18 years who had an IACI from June 2017 to July 2019. An 8:00 morning cortisol (8MC) sample wa
