Effects of intracerebroventricular administered fluoxetine on cardio-ventilatory functions in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Fluoxetine (FLX) is a selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor present in the aquatic environment which is known to bioconcentrate in the brains of exposed fish. FLX acts as a disruptor of various neuroendocrine functions in the brain, but nothing is known about the possible consequence of FLX exposure on the cardio-ventilatory system in fish. Here we undertook to investigate the central actions of FLX on ventilatory and cardiovascular function in unanesthetized rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of FLX (dosed between 5 and 25 μg) resulted in a si

Central and peripheral effects of oxytocin administration in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

The present study examined the hypothesis that oxytocin (OT) may influence female sexual behavior in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster). The effectiveness of OT to induce sexual behavior was tested in ovariectomized females that were injected daily with estradiol benzoate (EB, 0.02 micrograms, twice), a dose insufficient for estrus induction. On the third day females received intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of OT (1, 300, or 1000 ng) or saline vehicle. In the presence of minimal estrogen stimulation, OT did not induce sexual receptivity, or influence autogrooming or other social int

A possible central serotonergic mechanism involved in the effects of morphine on colonic motility in dog.

The effects of morphine (0.1 mg/kg) and 5-HTP (2 mg/kg) on colonic motility were investigated in dogs fasted for 15-22 h and fitted with two strain gauge transducers on the transverse colon at 8 and 12 cm from the ileo-colonic junction. The effects were compared to those obtained after previous intravenous (i.v.) (0.2 mg/kg) or intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) (10 micrograms/kg) administration of methysergide. Morphine (0.1 mg/kg) increased the colonic motility index by 475% from 0 to 30 min, this primary transient stimulatory response being followed 30-40 min later by a secondary response las

[Meningitis caused by Candida in a premature infant].

A case of Candida meningitis in a premature infant treated with amphotericin B IV for 41 days, resulted in negative CSF cultures after 5 days of therapy. Amphotericin B was also given intraventricularly for 21 days; purulent meningitis was a complication from this kind of therapy. Psychometric evaluation showed a mental age of 3 months in a chronological age of 7 months. Only one premature infant has been reported in the literature with intraventricular amphotericin B treatment. A review of Candida meningitis diagnosed before death in infants less than 1 year of age and a discussion of the mod

Origin, nature, and some functional considerations of intraventricular macrophages, with special reference to the epiplexus cells.

Intraventricular macrophages encompass the supraependymal, free-floating, and epiplexus (Kolmer) cells; the supraependymal cells lie in close apposition to the ventricular ependyma, the epiplexus cells are closely associated with the choroid plexus epithelium, and the free-floating cells are at a variable distance from the epithelial surface. Although the three cell types are regarded as one cellular entity, the epiplexus cells preponderate. On scanning electron microscopy, the epiplexus cells display diverse morphological forms, ranging from round to bipolar to stellate, and bear a variable n

Mechanistic Modeling of Intrathecal Chemotherapy Pharmacokinetics in the Human Central Nervous System.

PURPOSE: The pharmacokinetics of intrathecally administered antibody or small-molecule drugs in the human central nervous system (CNS) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to provide mechanistic and quantitative perspectives on the CNS pharmacokinetics of intrathecal chemotherapy, by using a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling approach. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A novel CNS PBPK model platform was developed and verified, which accounted for the human CNS general anatomy and physiologic processes governing drug distribution and disposition. The model was used to predict CNS

Evidence for hormonal participation in the natriuretic and kaliuretic responses to intraventricular hypertonic saline and norepinephrine.

To examine if hypothalamic or pituitary hormones are involved in the induction of the natriuresis which follows the injection of hypertonic saline or norepinephrine into the third ventricle, lesions were placed in the median eminence and the responses to intraventricular norepinephrine or hypertonic saline were evaluated. Sham lesions in which the electrode was lowered into the brain but stopped short of the hypothalamic region did not interfere with the natriuresis, kaliuresis, and antidiuresis induced by the third ventricular injection of either hypertonic sodium chloride or norepinephrine.

Deferoxamine Prevents Neonatal Posthemorrhagic Hydrocephalus Through Choroid Plexus-Mediated Iron Clearance.

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus occurs in up to 30% of infants with high-grade intraventricular hemorrhage and is associated with the worst neurocognitive outcomes in preterm infants. The mechanisms of posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus after intraventricular hemorrhage are unknown; however, CSF levels of iron metabolic pathway proteins including hemoglobin have been implicated in its pathogenesis. Here, we develop an animal model of intraventricular hemorrhage using intraventricular injection of hemoglobin at post-natal day 4 that results in acute and chronic hydrocephalus, pathologic choroid plexus

Long-term suppression in mice of the development of complementary memory storage sites: effect of a muscarinic antagonist.

Bitemporal injections of puromycin consistently induce amnesia of aversive maze-learning in mice when administered within 3 days of training. These bitemporal puromycin injections lose their amnestic effectiveness, if the latency between training and injection is extended beyond 6 days. Consistent with other evidence, we conclude that in our experimental paradigm, complementary memory storage sites normally develop in additional cerebral areas during the 6 days following training. Previous experiments have indicated that the central adrenergic system is critically involved in this process. We

Intraventricular Antibiotic Administration for the Treatment of Neonatal Ventriculitis: A Systematic Review.

Neonatal ventriculitis is a complication of meningitis and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite clinical importance, evidence regarding intraventricular antibiotic therapy has not been systematically collated. Our aim was to evaluate the existing literature on intraventricular antibiotic administration for neonatal ventriculitis, focusing on indications, antibiotic type, dosage, administration intervals, adverse effects, and patient outcomes. A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Scopus was conducted up to October 2025. Conference abstracts, lett

Neuropathophysiological effect and immuno-inflammatory response induced by kaliotoxin of androctonus scorpion venom.

OBJECTIVE: Kaliotoxin (KTX) is a neurotoxin purified from Androctonus scorpion venom. Purification and pharmacological and immunological characterization of this neurotoxin has been extensively studied, but its biological effects have not. The ability of KTX to induce neuropathophysiological and immuno-inflammatory effects was investigated. METHODS: NMRI mice were injected with a sublethal dose of KTX (20 ng/20 g of body weight) or saline solution via the intra-cerebro-ventricular route. Tissue damage and immunological biomarkers such as eosinophil peroxidase (EPO), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and

Modulatory role of substance P on gonadotropin and prolactin secretion in the rabbit.

Substance P (SP) is present in large quantities in the brainstem and hypophysiotropic areas of the brain, but its roles in gonadotropin and prolactin secretion are controversial. The aim of this study was to measure luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin (PRL) release from the pituitary after either intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection or infusion of SP or its C- and N-terminal fragments in intact (INT) and ovariectomized (OVX) conscious rabbits. A single injection of SP into the 3rd cerebral ventricle (3CVT) in INT and OVX rabbits augmented plasma LH co

Physiological antagonism between prostaglandin E2 and neuropeptide Y on thermoregulation in the dog.

These experiments were undertaken to determine whether neuropeptide Y (NPY) could suppress a prostaglandin hyperthermia in conscious dogs. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) (5 micrograms), injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle (ILV), evoked a hyperthermia of approximately 1 degrees C. Addition of ILV NPY (5 micrograms) significantly attenuated the PGE2-induced hyperthermia, whereas pancreatic polypeptide (PP), another member of the PP family peptide, did not. These results provide evidence for a role of NPY on thermoregulation in the dog.

Immunological blockade of endogenous thyrotropin-releasing hormone impairs recovery from hyperglycemia in mice.

Administration of antiserum to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) into the lateral cerebral ventricle of mice significantly attenuated recovery from hyperglycemia induced by treatment with 2-deoxyglucose but had no effect on the plasma glucose of saline-treated mice. TRH, injected centrally together with the anti-TRH antibody, reversed the effect of the antiserum and blocked the development of hyperglycemia. These findings suggest that activation of TRH neurons in the central nervous system may be a physiological event influencing recovery from hyperglycemia.

Lumboperitoneal Shunt Combined With Ommaya Reservoir Enables Continued Intraventricular Chemotherapy for Leptomeningeal Metastasis With Increased Intracranial Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Intra-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) chemotherapy for leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) can be delivered intraventricularly via an Ommaya reservoir. However, hydrocephalus associated with LM can interfere with chemotherapeutic drug distribution, and ventriculoperitoneal shunts can prevent drug distribution to the extra-ventricular CSF space. This study examined the feasibility of combining a lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt with an Ommaya reservoir to both control intracranial pressure and allow for intraventricular chemotherapy. METHODS: We identified 16 patients with LM who received both an O

Neuroendocrine regulation of growth hormone secretion in sheep. III. Serotoninergic systems.

The role of serotoninergic pathways in the regulation of growth hormone secretion in the sheep has been investigated. Both peripheral and central routes of administration of serotonin agonists and antagonists have been used. Intravenous administration of the serotonin agonist, buspirone, at 1.2 mg/kg/h lowered plasma GH levels (P less than 0.001) but at 0.21 mg/kg/h there was no significant decrease. Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of serotonin itself also depressed GH levels (P less than 0.01). The serotonin antagonist, cyproheptadine, failed to affect GH concentrations when give

Effects of centrally administered naloxone on phrenic nerve activity.

The present study examined the effect on respiration of naloxone administered centrally. Experiments were performed on anesthetized, paralyzed cats whose vagi and carotid sinus nerves had been cut. The animals' end-tidal pCO2 and body temperature were kept constant with servocontrollers. Naloxone administered into the third cerebral ventricle in doses of 40 micrograms/kg and 400 micrograms/kg resulted in significant (P less than 0.05) increases in phrenic neural activity. The response to the 400 micrograms/kg dose was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) than the response to the 40 microgr

New data concerning the effects of 6-hydroxydopamine on the exercise performance in rats.

An injection of 250 micrograms 6-OHDA into the right cerebral ventricle of adult rats tested after 45 days led to a reduction of the run performance on the treadmill compared with the control group, but only in the first period of this test, repeated 10-11 times, every 2-3 days. This behavior was more obvious in male and in exercise-enduring rats. The histological examination proved partial destruction of central monoaminergic (especially dopaminergic) structures in the 6-OHDA treated rats. 24-48 hours after peripheral injections of 6-OHDA (100 mg/kg b. w.) a considerable reduction of the run

Effects of diazepam on body temperature of the aged squirrel monkey.

Hypothermia was produced by IM administration of diazepam (0.125-0.5 mg/kg) to squirrel monkeys of various ages (2-16 years) in a thermoneutral (23 +/- 0.5 degrees C) environment with animals over eight years of age having slightly greater responses. Hypothermia caused by an intermediate dose (0.25 mg/kg) was augmented in a cold environment (15 degrees C), especially in the older animals. There was no marked alteration in the temperature change/age regression after 0.25 mg/kg diazepam in a hot environment (30 degrees C) compared with the control response. Injections of diazepam (1.25-5.0 micro
