All over the world, a large proportion of the population consume insects as part of their diet. In Western countries, however, the consumption of insects is perceived as a negative phenomenon. The consumption of insects worldwide can be considered in two ways: on the one hand, as a source of protein in countries affected by hunger, while, on the other, as an alternative protein in highly-developed regions, in response to the need for implementing policies of sustainable development. This review focused on both the regulations concerning the production and marketing of insects in Europe and the

Toll and Toll-related proteins play an important role in antibacterial innate immunity in insect, plants, and mammals. We present the first comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of Toll-related genes from both insects and mammals. Drosophila melanogaster contains Toll and a highly homologous gene, Tehao. The protein, Dm Tehao, comprises 795 amino acid residues and its cytoplasmic domain shares a striking 61% identity with Dm Toll. Two Toll homologues were found in another dipteran of medical importance, Anopheles gambiae, a vector for human malaria. One Toll-like gene each was identified from Ae

To perform its propagative and circulative cycle into its insect vector, the flavescence dorée phytoplasma invades different cell types. Clathrin-mediated endocytosis is used by a wide range of bacteria to infect eukaryote cells. Among the insect proteins interacting with the phytoplasma adhesin VmpA, we identified the adaptor protein complex AP-1 and AP-2 suggesting that phytoplasmas could enter the insect cells via clathrin-mediated endocytosis. By infection assays of insect cells in culture, we showed that phytoplasmas entry into Drosophila S2 cells was more efficient than infection of the

Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (aaNAT) catalyzes the transacetylation from acetyl-CoA to arylalkylamines. aaNATs are involved in sclerotization and neurotransmitter inactivation in insects. Phyletic distribution analysis confirms three clusters of aaNAT-like sequences in insects: typical insect aaNAT, polyamine NAT-like aaNAT, and mosquito unique putative aaNAT (paaNAT). Here we studied three proteins: aaNAT2, aaNAT5b, and paaNAT7, each from a different cluster. aaNAT2, a protein from the typical insect aaNAT cluster, uses histamine as a substrate as well as the previously identified aryla

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a ubiquitous bacterium in soils, insect cadavers, phylloplane, water, and stored grain, that produces several proteins, each one toxic to different biological targets such as insects, nematodes, mites, protozoa, and mammalian cells. Most Bt toxins identify their particular target through the recognition of specific cell membrane receptors. Cry proteins are the best-known toxins from Bt and a great amount of research has been published. Cry are cytotoxic to insect larvae that affect important crops recognizing specific cell membrane receptors such as cadherin, ami

BACKGROUND: Booklice (Liposcelis bostrichophila) are a common household insect pest distributed worldwide. Particularly in Japan, they infest 'tatami' mats and are the most frequently detected insect among all detectable insects, present at a frequency of about 90% in dust samples. Although it has been hypothesized that they are an important indoor allergen, studies on their allergenicity have been limited.
METHODS: To clarify the allergenicity of booklice and the cross-reactivity of this insect allergen with allergens of other insects, patients sensitized to booklice were identified from 185

Trypanosoma brucei is the unicellular parasite that causes African sleeping sickness and nagana disease in livestock. The parasite has a complex life cycle consisting of several developmental forms in the human and tsetse fly insect vector. Both the mammalian and insect hosts provide different nutritional environments, so T. brucei must adapt its metabolism to promote its survival and to complete its life cycle. As T. brucei is transmitted from the human host to the fly, the parasite must regulate its mitochondrial gene expression through a process called uridine insertion/deletion editing to

Striated muscles exhibit remarkable structural and functional specialization that enables precise control of force production, contractile kinetics, and energetic efficiency. Although vertebrate skeletal and cardiac muscles have been extensively studied, comparative analyses across animal phyla reveal that many molecular and biophysical principles governing muscle performance are deeply conserved. Insects, in particular, possess highly differentiated muscle types that provide powerful systems for dissecting the regulation of contraction, elasticity, and force generation at the level of the sar

The plant-pathogenic virus tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) encodes a structural glycoprotein (GN) that, like with other bunyavirus/vector interactions, serves a role in viral attachment and possibly in entry into arthropod vector host cells. It is well documented that Frankliniella occidentalis is one of nine competent thrips vectors of TSWV transmission to plant hosts. However, the insect molecules that interact with viral proteins, such as GN, during infection and dissemination in thrips vector tissues are unknown. The goals of this project were to identify TSWV-interacting proteins (TIPs)

Farmed edible insects are considered a potential resource to help address food security concerns toward the year 2050. The sustainability (e.g., lower environmental impact), nutritional (e.g., high-quality proteins, essential amino acids, fiber, unsaturated fats, vitamins, and minerals) and health (e.g., antioxidant, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory) benefits are the main reasons for the rise in interest for insects as alternative protein sources for food and feed production. Thus, edible insects can address the future global protein demand of an ever-in

The insect fat body plays a central role in insect metabolism and nutrient storage, mirroring functions of the liver and fat tissue in vertebrates. Insect fat body tissue is usually distributed throughout the insect body. However, it is often concentrated in the abdomen and attached to the abdominal body wall. The mosquito fat body is the sole source of yolk proteins, which are critical for egg production. Therefore, the in vitro culture of mosquito fat body tissues represents an important system for the study of mosquito physiology, metabolism, and, ultimately, egg production. The fat body cu

Insects are suggested as a sustainable protein source of high nutritional quality, but the effects of insect ingestion on processes in the gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiota (GM) remain to be established. We examined the effects of partial substitution of meat with insect protein (Alphitobius diaperinus) in a four-week dietary intervention in a healthy rat model (n = 30). GM composition was characterized using' 16S rRNA gene amplicon profiling while the metabolomes of stomach, small intestine, and colon content, feces and blood were investigated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Metabolomics anal

Insect herbivory induces plant defense responses that are often modulated by components in insect saliva, oral secretions or regurgitant, frass, or oviposition fluids. These secretions contain proteins and small molecules that act as elicitors or effectors of plant defenses. Several non-protein elicitors have been identified from insect oral secretions, whereas studies of insect saliva have focused mainly on protein identification. Yet, insect saliva may also contain non-protein molecules that could activate defense responses in plants. The goal of this study was to identify non-protein plant

Antibacterial proteins like lysozyme are important components of the insect non-specific immune response against bacteria. The complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) encoding a new lysozyme from Triatoma infestans, named lysozyme2, has been amplified by polymerase chain reaction and the rapid amplification of cDNA ends technique. The gene is expressed in the small intestine of the insect. The deduced protein sequence shows up to 70% similarity to lysozymes from other species. Furthermore, the protein exhibits significant structural concordance to other insect lysozymes. A striking feature

Immune responses to infection result in behavioral changes that affect resource acquisition, such as general starvation and compensatory feeding to offset changes in resource allocation. Mormon crickets aggregate and march in bands containing millions of insects. Some bands are comprised of insects seeking proteins. They are also low in circulating phenoloxidase (PO) and more susceptible to fungal attack, as we have demonstrated in the lab. Here, we ask: Do Mormon crickets elevate PO and consume protein in response to infection by the pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana? B. bassiana was appli

The complete covalent structure of the insect toxin purified from the venom of the North-African scorpion Androctonus australis Hector was described. Its amino acid sequence was established by phenylisothiocyanate degradation of several protein derivatives and proteolytic fragments in a liquid protein sequencer using either a "protein" or a "peptide" program. The position of the four disulfide bridges were deduced by analysis of proteolytic peptides before and after diperformic oxidation, and by partial labeling of the half cystine residues with [14C]-iodoacetic acid and determining the specif

Transforming food systems is critical to addressing environmental and public health challenges, and alternative protein sources (APs) are increasingly promoted as part of sustainable dietary transitions in Europe. However, consumers may not prioritise all AP sources equally. This study examines how consumers in seven Northern and Baltic European countries prioritise different AP sources simultaneously and identifies the characteristics associated with these preference patterns. Data were collected through an online survey of 4671 respondents (50% women). Participants ranked six AP sources, inc

Plants can deploy chemical defenses that poison herbivorous insects or deter their feeding; however, insects can counter by secreting effector proteins that modulate these defense responses. In principle, plants might therefore interfere with the expression of insect effector proteins, but knowledge about such a process remains limited. Here, we explored the mechanisms underlying how resistant tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) influences the effector proteins of whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), thereby affecting the interaction of B. tabaci with tomato. Using two near-isogenic tomato lines that differ

As the size of the human population increases, shortage of essential proteinaceous food products paved the way to found for new, sustainable, and natural protein resources from insects, legume crops, terrestrial and aquatic weeds, and fungi. Due to the rich source of essential amino acids, fatty acids and trace elements, Insect proteins play an important role in the production of alternative proteins. Unconventional legume crops were found to be rich in phytochemical, nutritional, and therapeutic properties, shows excellent properties to withstand extreme environmental condition. This article

SCOPE: Insects are a potentially environmentally friendly alternative dietary protein source to supplement mammalian and fish sources, but potential allergenic risks are a concern. Consumption of insects may result in anaphylaxis and has been implicated in cross-reactivity with shellfish. Many allergenic proteins may be involved in cross-reactivity, including tropomyosin (TM). The uniformity of TM cross-reactivity among edible insects is unknown. Candidate edible insects for variability in shellfish IgE cross-reactivity are investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Selected insects and known related
