Sweet Fennel Essential Oil Repels Drosophila suzukii via an Orco-Mediated Pathway.

Essential oils are promising alternatives to conventional chemical pesticides due to their toxic, repellent or oviposition-deterrent effects against many kinds of pests. Sweet fennel essential oil is widely recognized for its pharmacological, antimicrobial, and acaricidal properties. Moreover, several studies have demonstrated its insecticidal and repellent activities against insects. In this study, we found that sweet fennel essential oil exhibited strong dose-dependent repellent activity in the dual-choice still-air assay and oviposition behavioral assays against Drosophila suzukii adults. Anti-insect activity of benzylacetone and its structural analogues against Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Several studies have confirmed that the volatile oil of Rhododendron anthopogonoides Maxim has good anti-insect activity and is expected to become an environmentally friendly botanical insecticide, with benzylacetone as its main active component. Benzylacetone has a simple chemical structure, containing only three elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, low toxicity, and easy degradation. Therefore, in this study, benzylacetone and its seven structural analogues were selected for testing their anti-insect activity to Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in order to explore

Preliminary analysis of several attractants and spatial repellents for the mosquito, Aedes albopictus using an olfactometer.

Mosquito attractants and spatial repellents hold great promise in controlling mosquito pests. In assessing the effectiveness of mosquito attractants and repellents, a good olfactometer system, and optimized testing conditions, are essential. In this research, we demonstrated the usefulness of an olfactometer system, and optimized testing conditions for Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae). We found no significant difference in the biting activity of the insect between 8:00 and 22:00. Furthermore, 5-10 day old mosquitoes were relatively strongly attracted, with bloodsucking rate 75.8%. The ran

Reverse chemical ecology-based approach leading to the accidental discovery of repellents for Rhodnius prolixus, a vector of Chagas diseases refractory to DEET.

Rhodnius prolixus is one of the most important vectors of Chagas disease in Central and South America for which repellents and attractants are sorely needed. Repellents like DEET, picaridin, and IR3535 are widely used as the first line of defense against mosquitoes and other vectors, but they are ineffective against R. prolixus. Our initial goal was to identify in R. prolixus genome odorant receptors sensitive to putative sex pheromones. We compared gene expression of 21 ORs in the R. prolixus genome, identified 4 ORs enriched in male (compared with female) antennae. Attempts to de-orphanize t

Toxicity of Spanish needle extract (Asteraceae) on the adult stage of the house fly (Diptera: Muscidae).

The house fly, Musca domestica (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), is a worldwide urban species of insect that is of veterinary and medical interest. Adults of this fly cause nuisance and are common vectors of pathogens that affect both humans and animals. The purpose of this research was to find an environmentally friendly approach to eliminate and repel the adult stage of house flies in urban areas. Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) extract was tested for insecticidal toxicity against the adult stage in both laboratory and room conditions, using different solvents with varying polarities (hexane, ethyl ac

Bioassay-Guided Isolation of Iridoid Glucosides from Stenaria nigricans, Their Biting Deterrence against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), and Repellency Assessment against Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

In our natural product screening program, we screened natural products for their repellency and toxicity against insect vectors. Methanolic extract of aerial parts of Stenaria nigricans (Lam.), with no published chemistry, was tested for repellency against mosquitoes and imported hybrid fire ants. Methanolic extracts showed biting deterrence similar to DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) against Aedes aegypti L. Based on this activity, the crude extract was fractionated into chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol subfractions. The active methanolic subfraction was further fractionated into 1

Contact Toxicity, Grain-Protective Efficacy, and Behavioral Effects of Methyl Benzoate and Acetophenone Against Four Major Stored-Product Insect Pests.

Although the fumigant activity of the naturally occurring compounds methyl benzoate and its analogues has been extensively evaluated against stored-product insect pests, their contact toxicity when applied as residual surface sprays and grain protectants, as well as their repellent effects, remains poorly studied. The current study evaluated the contact toxicity of methyl benzoate (MB) and a related natural product, acetophenone (AP), on glass surfaces and on wheat grains, along with their repellent activity, against adults of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica, the red flour beetle,

Personal protection measures against fire ant attacks.

BACKGROUND: Fire ant stings lead to significant morbidity and mortality each year. Virtually no information exists in the scientific literature about the effectiveness of personal protection measures against these ants. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the level of protection from ant stings by socks and cotton tights and to evaluate the efficacy of repellents and other chemicals in preventing stings. METHODS: Commercially obtained infant socks were fitted on a plastic doll's foot, which was touched to fire ant mounds in a series of controlled experiments. Socks and cotton tights were stretched over

Volatile Emission of Pear Tree (Pyrus communis) and Olfactory Perception of Pear Psyllids (Cacopsylla pyri and C. pyrisuga) are Affected by Elevated Tropospheric Ozone Concentration.

Climate change and rising tropospheric ozone concentration are impacting ecosystems in various ways and can influence the volatile-mediated interactions between insects and their host plants. In this study, individuals of the psyllid species Cacopsylla pyri and C. pyrisuga as well as their host plant Pyrus communis were exposed to elevated but naturally occurring ozone concentrations. The effects on the olfactory perception of the insects and the volatile emission of the plants were examined. Ozone exposure affected the olfactory perception of C. pyri and C. pyrisuga. While the perception thre

Push-pull strategy that combines olfactory and visual cues for management of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) in avocado.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) pose a significant threat to avocado production primarily because they serve as vectors for Harringtonia lauricola (T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva) Z.W. de Beer & M. Procter, the fungal pathogen responsible for laurel wilt disease. Unfortunately, effective strategies for managing either the pathogen or its beetle vectors remain limited. To address this challenge, we investigated behavioral manipulation as a potential tool for managing vector populations. First, we assessed the effectiveness of combining visual and olfa

Pre-West Nile virus outbreak: perceptions and practices to prevent mosquito bites and viral encephalitis in the United States.

Mosquitoes can transmit over 100 of the viruses that can cause encephalitis, meningitis, and hemorrhagic disease in humans (Chin 2000; Gubler 1996; Monath 1989). While much is known about the ecology, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of the arboviral encephalitides (Campbell et al. 2002; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1997; Gubler 1998; Hayes 1989; Hubálek and Halouzka 1999), little empirical research exists regarding the U.S. population's knowledge of mosquitoes and arboviral encephalitis, particularly prior to the U.S. outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) in 1999. Insecticidal and repellent activity of cinnamic acid derivatives: investigating alternative products to control imported fire ants (Formicidae: Hymenoptera).

Trans-cinnamic acid and its derivatives were investigated against Solenopsis invicta Buren (RIFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (BIFA), and reproductively functional hybrid (HIFA) for their repellency and toxicity. A range of serial concentrations starting from 156 µg/g to the failure of treatments were evaluated. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency. Treatments were considered active until the removal of treated sand became similar to that in the ethanol control. Based on sand removal, trans-cinnamic acid, benzyl cinnamate and phenethyl cinnamate

Repellents and acaricides as personal protection measures in the prevention of tick-borne diseases.

A number of preventive measures for the protection of humans against tick-borne diseases were evaluated. Measures involving the avoidance of tick bites with the use of protective clothing and insect repellents are the simplest and most effective. Repellents are applied directly to the skin or clothing and other fabrics, such as bednets, tents and anti-mosquito screens. Currently, DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is considered the most efficient arthropod repellent reference substance. The registered and recommended active repellent ingredients for skin and/or cloths application, among others, ar

Exploring Heteropanax fragrans (Roxb.) Seem. Essential Oils: Chemical Composition and Insecticidal Activity Against Stored-Product Insects.

Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Lasioderma serricorne, and Tribolium castaneum are globally prevalent stored-product insect pests that cause significant economic losses due to contamination and damage to stored agricultural commodities. Traditional insecticides are harmful to health and the environment. In contrast, plant essential oils (EOs) offer a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative. This study investigates the insecticidal potential of EOs extracted from different parts of Heteropanax fragrans (Roxb.) Seem. against these insects. The EOs were extracted via hydrodistillation and

Transcriptional responses of Aedes aegypti chemosensory tissues in response to volatile DEET and citronella oil.

DEET and citronella oil are two of the most widely used mosquito repellents; however, their impact on chemosensory tissues is not fully understood. In their vapour phase, the repellency effect involves the olfactory system, with mosquitoes detecting and responding to diverse odorants through their antennae and mouthparts (maxillary palps and proboscis). In this study, we first performed repellency behavioural assays that indicated both DEET and citronella effectively impaired female Aedes aegypti host-seeking capabilities (i.e. landing on a host and taking a blood meal). We next used RNA seque

Lyme disease: Part II. Management and prevention.

Lyme disease (LD) is most often diagnosed clinically, and the differential diagnosis of erythema migrans may be challenging. Recent advances have raised questions about the efficacy of traditional diagnostic modalities, but may soon facilitate consistent identification of patients with Lyme borreliosis. Therapeutic recommendations vary with the stage of disease, and treatment usually leads to complete resolution. The management of patients with "chronic Lyme disease" is controversial. A number of preventative measures have been evaluated; those involving the avoidance of tick bites with protec
