BACKGROUND: National Malaria Programmes (NMPs) monitor the durability of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to inform procurement and replacement decisions. This is crucial for new dual active ingredients (AI) ITNs, for which less data is available. Pyrethroid-only ITN (Interceptor®) and dual AI (Interceptor® G2, and PermaNet® 3.0) ITNs were assessed across three health districts over 36 months in southern Burkina Faso to estimate median ITN survival, insecticidal efficacy, and to identify factors contributing to field ITN longevity.
METHODS: Durability was monitored through a prospective study

BACKGROUND: Insecticidal mosquito-proof netting screens could combine the best features of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), the two most important front line vector control interventions in Africa today, and also overcome the most important limitations of these methods. This study engaged members of a rural Tanzanian community in developing and evaluating simple, affordable and scalable procedures for installing readily available screening materials on eave gaps and windows of their own houses, and then treating those screens with a widely used IRS formulatio

BACKGROUND: While the overall burden of malaria is still high, the global technical strategy for malaria advocates for two sets of interventions: vector control-based prevention and diagnosis and prompt effective treatment of malaria cases. This study aimed to assess the performance of malaria interventions on malaria infection and anaemia in irrigated areas in Sudan.
METHODS: Based on the Sudan 2016 national malaria indicator survey, data for two states (Gezira and Sennar), characterized by large-irrigated schemes, were analysed. Four community-level malaria interventions were used as contex

BACKGROUND: Despite the proven effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in reducing malaria incidence and mortality, their usage among children in Africa remains inadequate. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to ascertain the prevalence of ITN usage for malaria control among children in Africa.
METHODS: This review was registered with Prospero (CRD42023474978). A search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar for publications between 2013 and 2023. The study population was children in Africa, the intervention was ITN utilization, and the prevalence of ITN use w

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission, characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity and complex vector behaviours, persists in Kenya's highlands despite widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The role of human activity in exposure risk remains underexplored. Identifying vulnerable times and locations is crucial for designing and optimizing targeted control strategies that address the intricate interplay between human activity and local vector behaviour that results in transmission. This study examined human-mosquito interactions in three different ecological settings in Na

Malaria has posed a momentous health and economic burden to the Sub-Saharan African region. The Sub-Saharan African region accounts for more than 90% of global malaria-related mortality and morbidity. Pregnant women and children under 5 years old are the most vulnerable. Mosquitoes transmit the plasmodium which is the parasite responsible for malaria. The climatic conditions, poverty, and poor healthcare system of the Sub-Saharan African region are some factors fueling this menace. There have been concerted efforts to annihilate malaria but the scuffle has been a tedious one. Malarial eradicat

RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine safety, effectiveness, and impact will be assessed in pre- and post-vaccine introduction studies, comparing the occurrence of malaria cases and adverse events in vaccinated versus unvaccinated children. Because those comparisons may be confounded by potential year-to-year fluctuations in malaria transmission intensity and malaria control intervention usage, the latter should be carefully monitored to adequately adjust the analyses. This observational cross-sectional study is assessing Plasmodium falciparum parasite prevalence (PfPR) and malaria control intervention

Understanding the behaviour of malaria vectors could lead to improved designs of partially treated insecticidal nets and low-cost nets with less insecticide content. The behaviour of Anopheles arabiensis around cow baited bed nets with partial adhesive treatments were assessed in experimental huts. The study was conducted in Moshi Tanzania, using a Latin Square design with five arms: no bed-net, intact untreated bed-net, roof, sides and whole adhesive treated bed-nets. The data analyses were done using generalized linear mixed effects models with proportions of mosquitoes on the bed-net panels

Mosquito age-grading is important for evaluating mosquito control efforts and estimating pathogen transmission risk. We previously developed a simple, low-cost, and high-throughput method to age-grade mosquitoes by computing the pixel intensity (PI) of wing photos, which reflects wing scale loss over time. Here the technique was refined and used to understand wild Anopheles gambiae population structures from the RIMDAMAL II clinical trial. PI distributions from wing photos of wild An. gambiae caught during the trial reflected wild population structures assessed by gold standard techniques, whe

The effect of insecticide-treated materials on reducing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is disputable. In Bangladesh, we evaluated the effect of a community-based intervention with insecticide impregnation of existing bed-nets in reducing VL incidence. This intervention reduced VL by 66.5%. Widespread bed-net impregnation with slow-release insecticide may control VL in Bangladesh.

We assessed the insecticidal efficacy of Olyset nets after 5 years of use in rural villages of Lao PDR and evaluated the relationship between the physical condition of the nets and their insecticidal effect. Our results showed that most of the Olyset nets remained effective after 5 years of use; however, there was no significant relationship between the physical condition of the nets (ie, presence of holes, level of stains) and the insecticidal effect. The presence of large holes in polyester nets compared to the Olyset nets suggest the Olyset nets are stronger; however, nearly half of Olyset

The cost of permethrin-treated bednets (50% EC; 0.2 g/m2, 2 rounds per year) was compared to the cost of residual spraying with lambdacyhalothrin 10% WP (0.03 g/m2, once yearly) in Hoa Binh, a mountainous province in northern Vietnam. Calculations of the amounts of insecticides needed were based on national guidelines, on data from a cross-sectional survey and on district activity reports. The actual cost of insecticide required per person per year was lower for impregnation (US$ 0.26) than for spraying (US$ 0.36), but the difference was smaller than expected. The total cost for impregnated be

BACKGROUND: Subclinical (asymptomatic) cases of malaria could be a major barrier to the success of malaria elimination programs. This study has evaluated the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) on the prevalence of subclinical malaria in the presence of pyrethroid resistance in the main malaria vector Anopheles culicifacies on malaria transmission among a cohort of children in villages of the Keshkal sub-district in Chhattisgarh state.
METHODS: A cohort of 6582 children ages less than 14 years was enrolled from 80 study clusters. Post monsoon survey was carried out at baseline be

BACKGROUND: Thanks to the large-scale distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), several hundreds of millions of cases, and malaria related mortality, were averted these last decades. However, disposing of the used, and discarded nets, made of non-biodegradable plastics, and impregnated with insecticides, and usually burned or buried, raises significant, physical and chemical, environmental and health concerns. This study explores the first application of pyrolysis to recycle, and repurpose, discarded LLINs, with tests conducted in Lombok, Indonesia.
METHOD: Pyrolysis was

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have contributed to the reduction of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. However, they rely on daily user behaviour and high coverage which is difficult to maintain. Also, insecticide resistance among malaria vector mosquitoes is contributing to reduced efficacy of control tools. To overcome these problems, we propose to evaluate a new tool for house modification, the insecticide-treated eave nets (ITENs) in combination with insecticide-treated window screens (ITWS) incorporated with dual active ingredient (dual AI) for the con

BACKGROUND: The use of insecticide-treated bed nets has been proven to be effective in reducing malaria transmission in highly endemic areas. Use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has been embraced by many malaria endemic countries. LLINs are up to 95% effective in inhibiting blood feeding, when used consistently even after 7 years. The challenge, however, is enhancing their consistent use, especially by the most vulnerable groups (children under 5 years and pregnant women). The study established factors associated with consistent use of bed nets for malaria control among children unde

This study reports the first baseline information on tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus (F.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), infestations in Ghana. The purpose of this study was to assess bed bug infestation levels, and the efficacy of locally available insecticides and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in controlling field bed bugs populations in the Cape Coast region. A survey was undertaken to assess bed bug infestation levels and current control practices by residents. In total, 205 bed bug affected households were identified in 20 communities and live bed bug infestations were associated wit

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, visceral and cutaneous, is seen in Turkey and has both public and veterinary importance. So far, four Leishmania species and their vectors have been detected in Turkey. Vector control is essential in endemic areas and several personal protection methods are available including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). In this study, we aimed to measure the effects of usage and storage conditions on LLINs in a village-scale study.
METHODS: Olyset(®) Plus bed nets were set up in different climatic conditions (rain, exposed to sunlight and humidity) and collected after 6

Dengue is the arboviral disease that has massively spread in intertropical regions these past few years. The rise in imported cases of dengue and the rapid spread of the Aedes vector mosquitoes in continental France since 2004 explain the occurrence of indigenous dengue cases among the nonimmune population and points to an epidemic risk. Severe dengue cases are rare, but lethality is highest among children under 5 years of age. Like pediatricians in tropical regions, we must learn how dengue presents in metropolitan France and how it can be managed, and pay special attention to severe and pote
