Insurance Coverage and Distribution of DXA Screening in Saudi Arabia: Evidence from Major Healthcare Settings.

Background: Osteoporosis is a major public health concern, and early detection through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been pivotal. However, evidence on how insurance coverage relates to the distribution of patients receiving DXA examinations in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study examines the distribution of patients receiving DXA examinations across different insurance types and healthcare settings among adult patients in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This retrospective observational study used de-identified electronic health record data from a public tertiary academic center and a

Policy Changes and Improvements in Health Insurance Coverage Among MSM: 20 U.S. Cities, 2008-2014.

Recent policy changes have improved the ability of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) to secure health insurance. We wanted to assess changes over time in self-reported health insurance status among MSM participating in CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) in 2008, 2011, and 2014. We analyzed NHBS data from sexually active MSM interviewed at venues in 20 U.S. cities. To determine if interview year was associated with health insurance status, we used a Poisson model with robust standard errors. Among included MSM, the overall percentage of MSM with health insu

Psychological Distress and Health Insurance Coverage among Formerly Incarcerated Young Adults in the United States.

The United States incarcerates more people per capita than any other nation. Studies have consistently demonstrated higher prevalence of serious mental illness among the incarcerated. Although health care may be available to individuals while incarcerated, research is needed to understand the context of health care coverage and mental health after incarceration. The purpose of this study is to estimate the point prevalence of psychological distress (PD) among young adults with incarceration experience, while comparing the prevalence to that of young adults in the general population. Additional

The Shadow Price of Uncertainty: Consequences of Unpredictable Insurance Coverage for Access, Care, and Financial Security.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Health insurance reform in the United States has fostered enrollment to promote access to care and reduce financial insecurity. However, enrollees' inability to reliably predict what insurance will cover (a.k.a. "coverage uncertainty") impedes these goals, often as much as being uninsured. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act initially expanded enrollment and reduced coverage uncertainty. After the mid-2010s, trends in coverage uncertainty plateaued, and it now impedes access to care for four times as many households as lack of health insurance. A variety of

The Impact of Insurance Coverage on Utilization of Prescription Contraceptives: Evidence from the Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that prescription contraceptives be covered by private health insurance plans with no cost sharing. Using medical and prescription claims from a large national insurer, I estimate individual claim rates and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs of prescription contraceptives for 329,642 women aged 13 to 45 who were enrolled in private health insurance between January 2008 and December 2013. I find that OOP spending on contraceptives has decreased sharply since the implementation of the ACA mandate. Using a difference-in-difference model that leverages employer level

Paying for prevention: challenges to health insurance coverage for biomedical HIV prevention in the United States.

Reducing the incidence of HIV infection continues to be a crucial public health priority in the United States, especially among populations at elevated risk such as men who have sex with men, transgender women, people who inject drugs, and racial and ethnic minority communities. Although most HIV prevention efforts to date have focused on changing risky behaviors, the past decade yielded efficacious new biomedical technologies designed to prevent infection, such as the prophylactic use of antiretroviral drugs and the first indications of an efficacious vaccine. Access to prevention technologie

Insurance Coverage for Chronic Diseases and Healthcare of Low-Income People: Evidence From Chinese Administrative Data.

Patient cost-sharing can lead to delays in necessary care, especially among low-income populations. In this study, we examine the impact of health insurance coverage for chronic disease treatments in outpatient care, using recent administrative insurance claims dataset from a low-income population in an underdeveloped city in China. Employing a propensity score matching and difference-in-differences approach, we find that outpatient coverage for certain chronic diseases increased outpatient utilization and expenses among patients with these conditions. Interestingly, these patients also increa

Health Insurance Coverage Changes Under the Affordable Care Act Among High Housing Cost Households, 2010-18.

This study examines the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on health insurance coverage among rent-burdened households-those spending more than 30% of their income on rent-and non-rent-burdened households. Using data from American Community Survey, we find that Medicaid take-up rate increased 8.88 percentage points (pp) among rent-burdened households and 7.54 pp among non-rent-burdened households in expansion states. Conditional on household income and demographic characteristics, rent-burdened households exhibit a 1.5 pp higher likelihood of Medicaid enrollment, with an additional declin

Financial Instability of Federal Navigator Program Challenges Organizations to Help Uninsured Enroll in Health Insurance Coverage.

Under the Affordable Care Act, the federal Health Insurance Navigator Program aims to reduce the rate of uninsured in the United States. Under this program, navigators help people obtain insurance coverage through federally facilitated Marketplaces. However, the program's financial instability and substantial budget cuts created a severe shortage of navigator assistance for the uninsured and underserved. The COVID-19 pandemic added further pressure to the already-strained program. Our study examined how unstable and unpredictable federal funding and the COVID-19 pandemic affected organizations

Cost-Utility Analysis of Extending Public Health Insurance Coverage to Include Diabetic Retinopathy Screening by Optometrists.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness in Canada. Eye examinations play an important role in early detection. However, DR screening by optometrists is not always universally covered by public or private health insurance plans. This study assessed whether expanding public health coverage to include diabetic eye examinations for retinopathy by optometrists is cost-effective from the perspective of the health care system. METHODS: We conducted a cost-utility analysis of extended coverage for diabetic eye examinations in Prince Edward Islan
