Rapid spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in pathogens is threatening human health. Integrons allow bacteria to integrate and express foreign genes, facilitating horizontal transfer of ARGs in environments. Consumption of raw vegetables represents a pathway for human exposure to environmental ARGs. However, few studies have focused on integron-associated ARGs in the endophytes of raw vegetables. Here, based on the approach of qPCR and clone library, we quantified the abundance of integrase genes and analyzed the diversity and contents of resistance gene cassettes in class 1 integrons

Antibiotic resistance is a global concern, although it has been studied most extensively in developed countries. We studied Escherichia coli and class 1 integrons in western Uganda by analyzing 1,685 isolates from people, domestic animals, and wild nonhuman primates near two national parks. Overall, 499 isolates (29.6%) were resistant to at least one of 11 antibiotics tested. The frequency of resistance reached 20.3% of isolates for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole but was nearly zero for the less commonly available antibiotics ciprofloxacin (0.4%), gentamicin (0.2%), and ceftiofur (0.1%). The fr

Background. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) has been linked to outbreaks of foodborne gastroenteritis disease, and the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant clones. In Colombia, laboratory surveillance of Salmonella spp. between 1997-2018 revealed that S. Typhimurium was the most ubiquitous serovar (27.6 % of all Salmonella isolates), with increasing levels of resistance to several families of antibiotics.Hypothesis. Resistant isolates of S. Typhimurium recovered from human clinical, food and swine samples carry class 1 integrons that are linked to antim

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important nosocomial pathogen also found in water, soil, plants and in human and animal fecal samples. In this study, 31 isolates from water samples were analyzed by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) and PCR to detect integrons and investigated for antibiotic resistance and plasmidial profile. The results demonstrated the presence of plasmids in four isolates. Three of these, isolates from water in a city park (Curupira Park, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil) and a lake at the University of São Paulo (Campus of Ribeirão Pret

BACKGROUND: Morganella morganii is an emerging nosocomial opportunistic pathogen with increasing multidrug resistance. Antibiotic resistance, driven primarily by the horizontal transfer of resistance genes, has become a global health crisis. Integrons, mobile genetic elements, are now understood to facilitate the transfer of these genes, contributing to the rapid proliferation of resistant strains. Understanding the regulatory role of integrons in drug resistance gene expression is crucial for developing novel strategies to combat this pressing public health issue.
