Impact of Microgravity on Cytoskeletal Dynamics, Protein Transport, and Signaling Networks: Potential Therapeutic Opportunities for Skin Health.

Astronauts encounter several challenges on spaceflight missions, including space radiation and microgravity. Over the past several decades, studies conducted in the field of space medicine have uncovered broad impacts on human physiology, including the integumentary system, which serves as a protective barrier to environmental factors. Dermatological alterations in astronauts are commonly observed during spaceflight missions. Advancing our understanding of the intracellular mechanisms impacted in skin within the context of microgravity may uncover potential therapies for maintaining and improv

Crocodile-inspired dome-shaped pressure receptors for passive hydrodynamic sensing.

Passive mechanosensing is an energy-efficient and effective recourse for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for perceiving their surroundings. The passive sensory organs of aquatic animals have provided inspiration to biomimetic researchers for developing underwater passive sensing systems for AUVs. This work is inspired by the 'integumentary sensory organs' (ISOs) which are dispersed on the skin of crocodiles and are equipped with slowly adapting (SA) and rapidly adapting (RA) receptors. ISOs assist crocodiles in locating the origin of a disturbance, both on the water surface and under wat

Serum interleukin-6 concentration in patients with pemphigus.

Pemphigus is a rare blistering autoimmune disease that damages the integumentary system and lowers the quality of life of patients. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been linked to the immunopathogenesis of pemphigus, according to recent research. Thus, the investigation purpose was to assess the function of IL-6 in the development and intensity of pemphigus disease. Between January 2022 and August 2022, a case-series study involving 26 patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV), four patients with pemphigus foliaceus (PF), and 20 healthy volunteers was carried out at the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermat

Recognition of melanoma cell antigens with antibodies present in sera from patients with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Patients with vitiligo show specific losses of integumentary melanocytes, probably due to autoimmunity against melanocytes. We attempted to determine the presence of antibodies against pigment cell antigens in the sera of vitiligo patients. METHODS: Detergent-solubilized human melanoma cells were submitted to electrophoretic separation and immunoblotted against serum samples obtained from 19 patients with vitiligo and from 20 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. RESULTS: Eighty-nine per cent of patients with vitiligo had antibodies to one or more pigment cell antigens. Simil

Geckos running with dynamic adhesion: towards integration of ecology, energetics and biomechanics.

Morphological specializations often enable animals to deal with challenges in nature, a prime example being the adhesive system of geckos. With this, geckos can access smooth and vertical (and even inverted) areas of the habitat that most other animals cannot. However, what is known about how geckos cling stems primarily from laboratory studies of static adhesion, with an emphasis on the integumentary component of the adhesive apparatus. In reality, the system is hierarchical, with complex musculotendinous, vascular and sensory systems that are crucial for achieving attachment, modulation of a

Clinician challenges in providing health care for a morbidly obese family member: a bariatric case study.

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease affecting millions of Americans. The disorder is likely to increase in prevalence because currently one third of the American population is obese. Many factors are associated with morbid obesity, including psychological (eg, depression), physiological (eg, hypothyroidism) mechanisms, sleep disorders (eg, sleep apnea), drug therapy (antidepressants, antidiabetic agents, steroids), and genetics. Increasing numbers of morbidly obese patients are requiring critical care, presenting major challenges to professional staff across the disciplines. This manuscript pr

Distribution of bovine viral diarrhoea virus antigen in persistently infected white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Infection with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), analogous to that occurring in cattle, is reported rarely in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). This study evaluated the distribution of BVDV antigen in persistently infected (PI) white-tailed deer and compared the findings with those from PI cattle. Six PI fawns (four live-born and two stillborn) from does exposed experimentally to either BVDV-1 or BVDV-2 were evaluated. Distribution and intensity of antigen expression in tissues was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Data were analyzed in binary fashion with a proportional odds mod

Inhibition of chitin synthesis by 5-benzoylamino-3-phenylisoxazoles with various substituents at two benzene rings and their larvicidal activity.

N-(3-Phenylisoxazol-5-yl)benzamides (5-benzoylamino-3-phenylisoxazoles: IOXs) with various substituents at two benzene rings were synthesized, and the chitin synthesis inhibition was measured in the cultured integumentary system of Chilo suppressalis. Larvicidal effects against C. suppressalis and Spodoptera litura were also examined, and the larvicidal activity in terms of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) was determined for some compounds. Among IOXs with various substituents at the benzoyl moiety, 2,6-difluoro-substituted (2,6-F2) benzoyl analogs showed the highest chitin synthesis activity. The l

Mechanical and Immunological Regulation in Wound Healing and Skin Reconstruction.

In the past decade, a new frontier in scarless wound healing has arisen because of significant advances in the field of wound healing realised by incorporating emerging concepts from mechanobiology and immunology. The complete integumentary organ system (IOS) regeneration and scarless wound healing mechanism, which occurs in specific species, body sites and developmental stages, clearly shows that mechanical stress signals and immune responses play important roles in determining the wound healing mode. Advances in tissue engineering technology have led to the production of novel human skin equ

Neurosyphilis: A Simulation Case for Emergency Medicine Residents.

Neurosyphilis is a dangerous and increasingly more prevalent sexually transmitted infection of the central nervous system caused by the bacterium Treponemapallidum that can present during the advanced stages of the disease (tertiary syphilis). Health care providers must remain vigilant in screening for syphilis in patients with high-risk behaviors as a delay in diagnosis and treatment may lead to symptom progression and debilitating sequelae years later. To date, there have been no published simulation case studies on neurosyphilis. This simulation case, based on a real patient encounter, is w

The Effect Of microbial Mats In The Decay Of Anurans With Implications For Understanding Taphonomic Processes In The Fossil Record.

The pattern and sequence of the decomposition of the Pipidae African dwarf frog (Hymenochirus boettgeri) is tracked in an experiment with microbial mats in order to explore soft tissue preservation over three years. Frog decay in microbial mats is preceded by rapid entombment (25-30 days) and mediated by the formation of a sarcophagus, which is built by a complex microbial community. The frog carcasses maintained a variety of soft tissues for years. Labile organic structures show greater durability within the mat, cells maintain their general shape (bone marrow cells and adipocytes), and muscl

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease: review of a rare autoimmune disease targeting antigens of melanocytes.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKHD) is a rare granulomatous inflammatory disease that affects pigmented structures, such as eye, inner ear, meninges, skin and hair. This disease is mainly a Th1 lymphocyte mediated aggression to melanocytes after a viral trigger in the presence of HLA-DRB1*0405 allele. The absence of ocular trauma or previous intraocular surgery sets VKHD appart from sympathetic ophthalmia, its main differential diagnosis. The disease has an acute onset of bilateral blurred vision with hyperemia preceded by flu-like symptoms. The acute uveitic stage is characterized by a diffus

Conserved features and evolutionary shifts of the EDA signaling pathway involved in vertebrate skin appendage development.

It is widely accepted that evolutionary changes in conserved developmental signaling pathways play an important role in morphological evolution. However, few in silico studies were interested in tracking such changes in a signaling pathway. The Ectodysplasin (EDA) pathway provides an opportunity to fill this gap because it is involved in vertebrate skin appendage development such as scales, teeth, hair, and feathers that take an obvious part in the adaptation of species to their environment. We benefited from the large amount of genomic data now available to explore the evolution of the upstre

Pharmacokinetics of Ceftiofur Crystalline-Free Acid in Clinically Healthy Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris).

Economical, injectable antibiotics are beneficial when clinical manifestations of an animal model prevent the use of oral antibiotics. Ceftiofur crystalline-free acid (CCFA) is an injectable, sustained-release form of ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin that is labeled for use in swine, cattle, and horses. Because CCFA is an economical, injectable antibiotic that could be of value for use in research dogs, the objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic properties of CCFA in apparently healthy dogs and to determine the minimal inhibitory concentrations of ceftiofur for
