Co-intelligence: a proposal for human-artificial intelligence collaboration for large language models in medical research.

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) offers transformative potential for medical research. Current approaches often focus on LLMs as a replacement for researchers or as a supporting tool. In this Viewpoint, we discuss the concept of co-intelligence, leveraging the strengths of both humans and LLMs for complementary and synergistic collaboration to accelerate scientific advancement while mitigating limitations. We discuss the theoretical underpinnings of co-intelligence and advocate for its role in medical research. Through this Viewpoint, we also aim to highlight key considerations, d

Blepharoplasty in the Artificial Intelligence Era.

Blepharoplasty and related periorbital procedures sit at the interface of functional reconstruction, esthetic surgery, ophthalmology, facial plastic surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Because eyelid and periorbital changes can be captured in photographs, videos, and 3-dimensional imaging, artificial intelligence has growing relevance for objective measurement, screening, planning, outcome assessment, and patient education. Current evidence is promising but heterogeneous. Image-based computer vision and deep learning appear closest to clinical use, whereas large language and generativ

[Artificial intelligence in the management of stroke].

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has generated considerable expectations for improving stroke management. In this work, we present current AI applications for stroke prevention, triage, and treatment selection during the acute phase. We then discuss the potential value of AI in predicting neurological recovery. Currently, only the detection of atrial fibrillation and the identification of large-vessel occlusions on brain imaging have been validated. Nevertheless, recent advances are opening up new perspectives for using AI algorithms in stroke care.

Elements of olfactory intelligence in Drosophila.

The ability to make the world of odorants intelligible is a key capability of the Drosophila olfactory system that we shall call olfactory intelligence. Characterizing the functional logic of the Drosophila early olfactory system that makes the natural world of odorants intelligible is a major challenge in neuroscience. Starting by modeling the space of odorants using constructs of both semantic and syntactic information, we establish that the Antenna Lobe and Mushroom Body Calyx first decompose the confounding representation of the Antenna into a concentration independent odorant semantics in

Artificial intelligence and deskilling in medicine.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in medical practice to complete tasks that were previously completed by the physician, such as visit documentation, treatment plans and discharge summaries. As artificial intelligence becomes a routine part of medical care, physicians increasingly trust and rely on its clinical recommendations. However, there is concern that some physicians, especially those younger and less experienced, will become over-reliant on artificial intelligence. Over-reliance on it may reduce the quality of clinical reasoning and decision-making, negatively impact p

Progress in medicine and artificial intelligence.

This essay questions, with regard to medicine, the idea of progress as technological development by focusing on people rather than things. It analyzes how the predominance of such an idea of progress converts today's societies to techno-fetishism that degrades community life and medical practice, contributing to the medicalization of social life. It is argued that the realization of technological potentialities depends on their forms of use; that the main motive of technological development is unlimited profit and that priority developments are those that enhance the social control that mainta

Predictive Intelligence for Cholera in Ukraine?

Cholera, an ancient waterborne diarrheal disease, remains a threat to public health, especially when climate/weather processes, microbiological parameters, and sociological determinants intersect with population vulnerabilities of loss of access to safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure. The ongoing war in Ukraine has either damaged or severely crippled civil infrastructure, following which the human population is at risk of health disasters. This editorial highlights a perspective on using predictive intelligence to combat potential (and perhaps impending) cholera outbreaks in vari

Sensors and Sensing for Intelligent Vehicles.

Over the past decades, both industry and academy have made enormous advancements in the field of intelligent vehicles, and a considerable number of prototypes are now driving our roads, railways, air and sea autonomously. However, there is still a long way to go before a widespread adoption. Among all the scientific and technical problems to be solved by intelligent vehicles, the ability to perceive, interpret, and fully understand the operational environment, as well as to infer future states and potential hazards, represent the most difficult and complex tasks, being probably the main bottle

The Neural Correlates of Intelligence Comparison.

Social comparison plays an important role in our daily life. Several studies have investigated the neural mechanism of social comparison; however, their conclusions remain controversial. The present study explored the neural correlates of intelligence comparison and nonsocial size comparison using functional magnetic resonance imaging and a distance effect paradigm. We found that both intelligence and size comparisons obeyed the behavioral distance effect-longer response times for near than far distances and this effect involved an overlapping frontal network including the dorsomedial prefront
