Candidemia in Brazilian neonatal intensive care units: risk factors, epidemiology, and antifungal resistance.

Candidemia is responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units and represents a challenge due to the complexity of hospitalized neonates, the deficiency in approved and precise diagnostic techniques, and the increasing number of species resistant to antifungal agents. Thus, the objective of this study was to detect candidemia among neonates evaluating the risk factors, epidemiology, and antifungal susceptibility. Blood samples were obtained from neonates with suspected septicemia, and the mycological diagnosis was based on yeast growth in culture. The fungal

Emerging Chryseobacterium indologenes Infection in Indian Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Case Report.

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens and nosocomial infections constitute common and serious problems for neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Chryseobacterium indologenes is a non-lactose-fermenting, gram-negative, health care-associated pathogen (HCAP). It is ubiquitous and intrinsically resistant to several antibiotics. Despite its low virulence, C. indologenes has been widely reported to cause life-threatening infections. Patients on chronic immunosuppressant drugs, harboring invasive devices and indwelling catheters become the nidus for C. indologenes. Typically, C. ind

Variations in transport outcomes of outborn infants among Canadian neonatal intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: Outborn infants born at community hospitals and transported to tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for treatment account for 20% of all tertiary NICU admissions in Canada. Little is known about variations in their outcomes. The Transport Risk Index of Physiologic Stability (TRIPS) is a validated score of neonatal physiological status that can identify differences between transport teams' outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine regional variations in outcomes among outborn infants transported to Canadian tertiary NICUs using TRIPS. DESIGN AND METHODS: Transport teams prospectiv

Nursing Care of Surgical Neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Narrative Review.

Surgical neonates represent one of the most vulnerable populations in the NICU due to physiologic immaturity, limited compensatory reserves, and exposure to perioperative stress. Although advances in neonatal surgery, anesthesia, and intensive care have improved survival, outcomes remain closely linked to the quality and consistency of nursing care. Nurses play a critical role in physiologic stabilization, prevention of complications, early recognition of deterioration, and delivery of family-centered care throughout the perioperative course. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence

Care of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduate after Discharge.

Premature and critically ill term infants are often discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with ongoing medical problems, including respiratory problems; growth, nutrition and feeding problems; and neurologic injury. At discharge, they may also be dependent on technology such as supplemental oxygen, tracheostomy, mechanical ventilation, feeding tube, and monitors. Primary care physicians must have special knowledge and understanding of the medical complications of NICU graduates to coordinate post-discharge care. We examine the most common post-discharge medical problems in pr

Systematic Review of Kangaroo Care Duration's Impact in Neonatal Intensive Care Units on Infant-Maternal Health.

Kangaroo care (KC), skin-to-skin contact between infants and caregivers, is encouraged in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to support health through improved weight, growth, and infant-maternal attachment while reducing the incidence of sepsis and infant pain. However, the optimal duration and frequency of KC to maximize health outcomes is unknown. Given parents' time stressors, identifying optimal KC time is critical. A literature review was undertaken on May 28, 2021 via querying the PubMed database from January 1, 1995, to May 28, 2021, regarding KC and NICUs with 442 results. Eleven s

Pressure ulcers' incidence, preventive measures, and risk factors in neonatal intensive care and intermediate care units.

Epidemiological studies on pressure ulcers (PUs) in hospitalised infants are scarce. Spain lacks comprehensive research studies providing data on the prevalence or incidence in this population. This work was developed to determine the incidence of PUs in hospitalised infants admitted to intensive and intermediate care units, along with relevant risk factors and preventive measures. A prospective study appraising the incidence of PUs in infants was performed. The risk factors and preventive measures were evaluated using a multivariate logistic regression model. A sample of 268 infants was inclu

Parental satisfaction with care given in neonatal intensive care units, multicentre referral hospitals in eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Parental satisfaction is an important dimension of the quality of a child's care and has been shown to improve health outcomes, including adherence to therapeutic regimens and understanding of medical information. Parental satisfaction is low in resource-limited countries like Ethiopia, with the paucity of evidence. This study aimed to determine the magnitude of parental satisfaction with care given in neonatal intensive care and its associated factors among parents of neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at referral hospitals in eastern Ethiopia from June to

Neonatal outcomes associated with tobacco, alcohol, and crack use during pregnancy in three Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

Despite the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy, studies focusing exclusively on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) admissions remain limited. This study investigates the impact of maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, and/or crack, on neonatal outcomes among infants admitted to three Brazilian NICUs. Additionally, the investigation explores the impact of substance use on DNA damage in newborns. Over a one-year period, data from 254 newborns were collected through medical records, accompanied by blood samples. Findings revealed that 16.1% of newborns had mothers reporting substance use
