Intergenerational transmission of childhood interpersonal trauma in adults entering therapy for intimate partner violence: The role of identity diffusion.

BACKGROUND: Childhood Interpersonal Trauma (CIT) is a major public health issue that increases the risk of perpetrating and sustaining intimate partner violence (IPV) in adulthood, perpetuating intergenerational cycles of violence. Yet, the explanatory mechanisms behind the intergenerational transmission of trauma warrant further exploration. OBJECTIVE: This study explored identity diffusion as an explanatory mechanism linking cumulative and individual CIT (sexual, physical and psychological abuse, physical and psychological neglect, witnessing parental physical or psychological IPV, bullying

Exposure to carbon black nanoparticles during pregnancy aggravates lipopolysaccharide-induced lung injury in offspring: an intergenerational effect.

Carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) are one of the most frequently used nanoparticles. Exposure to CBNPs during pregnancy (PrE to CBNPs) can directly induce inflammation, lung injury, and genotoxicity in dams and results in abnormalities in offspring. However, whether exposure to CBNPs during pregnancy enhances the susceptibility of offspring to environmental stimuli remains unknown. To address this issue, in this study, we intranasally treated pregnant mice with mock or CBNPs from gestational day (GD) 9 to GD18, and F1 and F2 offspring were normally obtained. By intratracheal instillation of m

Intergenerational transmission of child abuse risk: Cognitive mediators in a multigenerational study.

BACKGROUND: Although the intergenerational transmission of aggressive parenting behaviors is well documented, few studies utilize multigenerational, multi-informant longitudinal designs to clarify the mechanisms underlying continuity in child abuse risk. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the underlying cognitive process accounting for the intergenerational transmission of child abuse risk, testing whether prenatal parenting attitudes approving aggressive parenting predicted parental child negative intent attributions sequentially mediating associations between first (G1) and second (G2) generati

Effects of parenting quality on adolescents' personality resemblance to their parents. The TRAILS study.

This study considers the development of resemblance between 741 adolescents and their biological parents, across six NEO-PI-R personality traits known to be important in psychological problems: anger-hostility, impulsiveness, vulnerability, assertiveness, excitement-seeking, and self-discipline. We modelled the association between perceived parental warmth and rejection at age eleven and personality resemblance to parents at about age sixteen. Parenting experienced during early adolescence was related to the degree and direction in which adolescents resembled their parents five years later in

Older parents' expectations of moving closer to their children.

Research shows that older parents engage in return migration in older to live closer to children from whom they receive care. However, less is known about how characteristics of adult children influence this process. Data for this analysis are from 5,382 older parents participating in the 1993/4 AHEAD national survey of adults aged 70 years old and older. Findings demonstrate that elderly parents who expect to move closer to adult children tend to be older, female, and have at least one child who is better-off financially than they are. Living alone magnifies the effect of poor self-rated heal

'I Do Not Want to Depend Too Much on My Children': Motivations and Challenges for Intergenerational Co-Residence Among Older Adults in Indonesia.

In Indonesia, intergenerational co-residence in later life is widely regarded as a normative arrangement, yet older adults' own motivations for and reservations about living with their adult children remain underexamined. This study explored how older Indonesian adults perceive co-residence with their adult children and what considerations shape their preferences. Using a vignette-based qualitative design, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 older adults (aged 60 to 78) who were themselves living in multigenerational households. Data were analysed using a hybrid inductive-deductive

"How did I get here?": a qualitative life-course analysis of Australian women's experiences of elder abuse.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We applied a life-course perspective to understand how older women's reported experiences of serious elder abuse were shaped by a history of violence and poverty. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: 17 participants (mean age 65.8, SD 4.5) self-reporting experiencing elder abuse within the past 12 months were purposively recruited from the longitudinal Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy cohort. They participated in a 1-hour semi-structured qualitative interview between April and November 2024 and their data were analyzed using a thematic approach. RESULTS: P

[Generational Differences Among Italian Nephrology Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study].

Background. The aging healthcare workforce in Italy, with an average age approaching 50 years, creates demographic imbalances that hinder intergenerational collaboration and knowledge transfer. This issue is particularly critical in nephrology, where nurses play a pivotal role in delivering personalized care by combining advanced technical expertise with high-quality human support. This study aims to evaluate and compare the generational characteristics of Italian nurses working in the nephrology field. Methods. A cross-sectional study based on the Multidimensional Nursing Generations Question

Multimedia sister circles: a study protocol advancing an intergenerational approach to sexual health and HIV prevention for black women and girls (RoyalTea study).

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), shaped by social determinants, stigma, and limited access to culturally responsive sexual health interventions. Health communication film, community-based, and intergenerational approaches have shown promise in promoting engagement and dialogue around sensitive health topics, yet brief, scalable interventions tailored to Black women across the life course remain underexplored. METHODS: This protocol describes a mixed-meth

Intergenerational Factors Influencing Household Cohabitation in Urban China: Chengdu.

Family composition impacts individual consumption habits, which may potentially transform urban integral space structure. Due to the reform in the housing system at the end of the 1990s and increases in residents' income, houses became more affordable, and intergenerational household cohabitation is no longer the primary pattern. Nonetheless, as families change, it still remains an important form of family composition. Intergenerational support is important in household habitation. This study examines the temporal changes and the structure of intergenerational household cohabitation. Moreover,

A Family Affair: Family Typologies of Problems and Midlife Well-Being.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Midlife adults are a "pivot" generation, responding to parents' and grown children's problems. Yet, some midlife adults may have families where multiple members suffer sorrows, whereas other midlife adults may have families with few problems. This study examined: (a) typologies of problems across generations and (b) associations between profiles of problems and midlife adults' well-being. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Midlife adults (N = 633) reported their own, each parent's (n = 868), and grown child's (n = 1,785) physical (e.g., injury, cancer), psychological (e.g

[Need for communication and the role of ageist attitudes in its fulfilment: a qualitative study of older people.].

The influence of everyday communication of older people on their quality of life and physical well-being finds more and more evidence and is confirmed by the latest researches of gerontologists. However, in the scientific literature, the attitude of older people towards communication, as well as their strategies for maintaining social connections are still poorly documented. While 19,5% of older people living alone recognize that they do not meet with relatives or friends at all, and 22,7% meet with relatives less than once a month, the social participation of older people, and in particular,

Subjective aging and psychological well-being in older adults: a narrative review and multilevel framework integrating perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural pathways.

As the global population ages, understanding the psychological determinants of well-being in later life has become an important public health priority. A growing body of evidence suggests that how older adults experience, interpret, and evaluate their own aging-the domain of subjective aging-shapes psychological well-being. However, this literature remains fragmented across social gerontology, health psychology, and cultural psychology, with limited integration of perceptual, behavioral, and sociocultural mechanisms. This narrative review synthesizes recent and foundational literature on subje

Prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure predict teen cocaine use.

Preclinical studies have identified alterations in cocaine and alcohol self-administration and behavioral responses to pharmacological challenges in adolescent offspring following prenatal exposure. To date, no published human studies have evaluated the relation between prenatal cocaine exposure and postnatal adolescent cocaine use. Human studies of prenatal cocaine-exposed children have also noted an increase in behaviors previously associated with substance use/abuse in teens and young adults, specifically childhood and teen externalizing behaviors, impulsivity, and attention problems. Long-term effects of child punishment on Mexican women: a structural model.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate long-term effects of parental use of physical and verbal punishment on Mexican women. To study both direct and indirect effects of these phenomena, a structural model was developed and tested. METHOD: One hundred and fifty Mexican women were interviewed with regard to their history of child abuse, their level of depression, alcohol use, antisocial behavior, and punishment of their own children. Factors representing such constructs were specified within a structural equation model and their inter-relations were estimated. Women's history of a

The intergenerational effects of Indian Residential Schools: implications for the concept of historical trauma.

The current paper reviews research that has explored the intergenerational effects of the Indian Residential School (IRS) system in Canada, in which Aboriginal children were forced to live at schools where various forms of neglect and abuse were common. Intergenerational IRS trauma continues to undermine the well-being of today's Aboriginal population, and having a familial history of IRS attendance has also been linked with more frequent contemporary stressor experiences and relatively greater effects of stressors on well-being. It is also suggested that familial IRS attendance across several

The Impact of Living Alone and Intergenerational Support on Depressive Symptoms Among Older Mexican Americans: Does Gender Matter?

The study examined gender differences in the impact of living alone and intergenerational support on depressive symptoms among Mexican American older adults. The sample included 335 parent-adult child pairs which are nested within 92 Mexican American respondents, because each respondent reported their specific relationships with each child. Clustered regression analysis showed gender differences in the impact of living alone and intergenerational support on depressive symptoms among Mexican American older adults. In general, older men provided and received less intergenerational support than o

More Than Health: Long-Term Care Insurance Reshaping Family Support in Aging China.

China's rapidly aging population has strained traditional family-based elder care, leading to the introduction of Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) as a government-supported solution. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and employing Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Triple-Difference (DDD) methodologies, this study explores LTCI's impact on intergenerational financial transfers within households. The findings demonstrate that LTCI significantly increases financial support from elderly parents to adult children by reducing elder care-related economic bur

Breaking the cycle: A systematic review of intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment and preventive parenting interventions.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a major global public health concern with well-documented intergenerational patterns. Parents with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk of perpetuating harmful parenting practices. However, evidence suggests that targeted parenting interventions can disrupt this cycle, particularly when grounded in trauma-informed care. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesize empirical evidence on the effectiveness of parenting interventions aimed at preventing the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment among caregivers with hist
