Three psychotherapies for anorexia nervosa: a randomized, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Few randomized, controlled trials have examined the efficacy of treatments for anorexia nervosa. Cognitive behavior therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy are effective in a related disorder, bulimia nervosa. There are theoretical and treatment indications for these therapies in anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Fifty-six women with anorexia nervosa diagnosed by using strict and lenient weight criteria were randomly assigned to three treatments. Two were specialized psychotherapies (cognitive behavior therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy), and one was a control treatment combining clin

Interpersonal problems as predictors of alliance, symptomatic improvement and premature termination in treatment of depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the association of interpersonal problems with therapy outcome. The current study investigates if interpersonal problems predict process and outcome of three different treatments for depression. METHODS: The data originate from a randomized clinical trial comparing supportive-expressive psychotherapy, antidepressant medication and pill-placebo for treatment of depression. Interpersonal problems were used as predictors of alliance, symptomatic improvement and premature termination of treatment. RESULTS: Interpersonal proble

Changes in personality functioning following psychotherapy: Utilizing machine learning to identify predictors in a psychodynamic psychotherapy sample.

INTRODUCTION: Although personality functioning has a long psychodynamic tradition and has received renewed interest in psychotherapy research with the DSM-5 and ICD-11, little is known about its course and influencing factors following psychotherapy. METHODS: In a sample of 1208 completed outpatient psychodynamic psychotherapies, we examined changes in personality functioning in the 1-year follow-up. Machine learning was used to filter out potential predictors from all 227 possible predictors for changes in personality functioning following psychotherapy. RESULTS: For most patients, improvem

Interpersonal subtypes in social phobia: diagnostic and treatment implications.

Interpersonal assessment may provide a clinically useful way to identify subtypes of social phobia. In this study, we examined evidence for interpersonal subtypes in a sample of 77 socially phobic outpatients. A cluster analysis based on the dimensions of dominance and love on the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex Scales (Alden, Wiggins, & Pincus, 1990) found 2 interpersonal subtypes of socially phobic patients. These subtypes did not differ on pretreatment global symptom severity as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (Derogatis, 1993) or diagnostic comorbidity but did exhibi

Trusting the Psychotherapist, Trusting the Governmental System and Perhaps Trusting the Neighbor Next Door: Exploring the Institutional Nature of Trust in Psychotherapists and Examining Different Groups of Trusters in a Large German Patient Sample.

BACKGROUND: Trust in psychotherapists is considered primarily interpersonal. However, psychotherapists could be viewed as representatives of the (healthcare) system. In this study, we investigated whether trust in psychotherapists is more closely linked to interpersonal or institutional trust. Furthermore, we explored whether people can be distinguished into different trust groups. METHOD: In a German cross-sectional study sample, we identified 1,300 persons (61.7% female; M = 48.46 years; SD = 14.45 years) indicating experiences with psychotherapy (current and/or in the past). Correlation an

Metacognition and mentalising as core mechanisms of psychotherapy.

Metacognition and mentalising are central change mechanisms in psychotherapy, with transdiagnostic relevance. The how, why and when of metacognition creates a roadmap for psychotherapy, enhancing awareness, understanding and options for changing maladaptive behaviours that maintain psychiatric disorders. This offers a framework for psychotherapy, fostering deeper self-understanding and improved interpersonal interactions.

Three psychological treatments for bulimia nervosa. A comparative trial.

The specificity and magnitude of the effects of cognitive behavior therapy in the treatment of bulimia nervosa were evaluated. Seventy-five patients who met strict diagnostic criteria were treated with either cognitive behavior therapy, a simplified behavioral version of this treatment, or interpersonal psychotherapy. Assessment was by interview and self-report questionnaire, and many aspects of functioning were evaluated. All three treatments resulted in an improvement in the measures of the psychopathology. Cognitive behavior therapy was more effective than interpersonal psychotherapy in mod

Changes during treatment for bulimia nervosa: a comparison of three psychological treatments.

Seventy-five patients with bulimia nervosa were treated with cognitive behaviour therapy, behaviour therapy or interpersonal psychotherapy. The changes that occurred during treatment were assessed in a subsample of 38 patients. There was an immediate decrease in the frequency of binge-eating and purging (self-induced vomiting or laxative misuse). This continued for 4 wk in interpersonal psychotherapy and for 8 wk in the other two treatment conditions. There were no clear differences between the three treatments in the time course of their effects on a global measure of eating behaviour and att

Psychotherapy of dysthymia.

OBJECTIVE: The author reviews empirical research on the psychotherapy of dysthymia. Dysthymia, a prevalent mood disorder, has been shown frequently to respond to antidepressant medication. The need for a treatment for dysthymic subjects unable or unwilling to take, or unresponsive to, medication still remains. METHODS: Studies were located by computerized search and the author's knowledge of the literature. All reports of studies on psychotherapy outcome for dysthymic patients, except studies of late-life chronic major depression, were included. RESULTS: Psychotherapy research on dysthymia h

Principles of Supportive Psychotherapy for Perinatal Distress.

Although interpersonal psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of perinatal distress, supportive psychotherapy has not been as widely studied by researchers. However, the principles of supportive psychotherapy are essential in the treatment of perinatal distress. The purpose of this article is to show that supportive psychotherapy is a plausible intervention that nurses and other maternity care providers can use with women who experience anxiety and depression in the perinatal period.

The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy for eating disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for eating disorders. METHOD: Randomized controlled trials of CBT were searched. Seventy-nine trials were included. RESULTS: Therapist-led CBT was more efficacious than inactive (wait-lists) and active (any psychotherapy) comparisons in individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Therapist-led CBT was most efficacious when manualized CBT-BN or its enhanced version was delivered. No significant differences were observed between therapist-led CBT for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disord

The specificity of psychotherapeutic competence: A study protocol on the development of facilitative interpersonal skills across professional pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Facilitative interpersonal skills (FIS) are widely used as an operationalization of therapists' interpersonal competence. However, the degree to which FIS are specific outcomes of formal psychotherapy training or instead reflect more general abilities developed across different professional pathways or outside of any formal training is unclear. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: To test whether psychotherapy students show a stronger stage-related increase in FIS levels than students from other fields, this study protocol outlines a cross-sectional cohort design in which FIS levels are assess

Alexithymia and interpersonal problems.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal relationships are substantially codetermined by nonverbal communication, e.g. facial affect. Given the deficits of nonverbal affect recognition and expression in alexithymia, we hypothesized that alexithymics had more interpersonal problems than nonalexithymic individuals, and that the various facets of the alexithymia construct are differentially related to interpersonal problems. METHOD: 149 subjects participating in an inpatient group psychotherapy program completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C) at the b

Relationship-focused therapy for bulimia and binge eating: Introduction to the special section.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder commonly report co-occurring interpersonal problems, and treatment that focuses on relationships and relational functioning has shown benefit relative to other forms of treatment. Relational psychotherapy for eating disorders can vary on several important dimensions, such as how structured and symptom-focused versus exploratory and patient-directed it is, whether it focuses on past relationships and patterns in relationships over time versus focusing on current relationships, and whether it includes the relationship with the therapist

Using Interpersonal Dimensions of Personality and Personality Pathology to Examine Momentary and Idiographic Patterns of Alliance Rupture.

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) integrates several theoretical models of personality functioning, including interpersonal theory. The interpersonal circumplex dimensions of warmth and dominance can be conceptualized as traits similar to those in AMPD Criterion B, but interpersonal theory also offers dynamic hypotheses about how these variables that change from moment to moment, which help to operationalize some of the processes alluded to in AMPD Criterion A. In the psychotherapy literature, dynamic interpersonal behaviors are thought to be critical for identifying therap

Interpersonal problem areas and onset of panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies indicate that stressful life events are key precipitants of psychological disturbances. Severe stress often precedes the onset or exacerbation of illness in vulnerable individuals and may be of primary importance in the genesis of some mental disorders. Several authors have suggested that major life events play a role in the development of panic-related symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of stressful life events, in particular events focused in the interpersonal psychotherapy problem areas (grief, role disputes, role transitions, interperso
