A lymphocyte chemoaffinity axis for lung, non-intestinal mucosae and CNS.

Tissue-selective chemoattractants direct lymphocytes to epithelial surfaces to establish local immune environments, regulate immune responses to food antigens and commensal organisms, and protect from pathogens. Homeostatic chemoattractants for small intestines, colon and skin are known1,2, but chemotropic mechanisms selective for respiratory tract and other non-intestinal mucosal tissues remain poorly understood. Here we leveraged diverse omics datasets to identify GPR25 as a lymphocyte receptor for CXCL17, a chemoattractant cytokine whose expression by epithelial cells of airways, upper gast

Mucosa and microbiota - the role of intrinsic parameters on intestinal wound healing.

Mucosal healing in the gut is an essential process when it comes to chronic inflammatory disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) but also to the creation of intestinal anastomosis. Despite an improvement of surgical techniques, the rates of anastomotic leakage remain substantial and represent a significant health-care and socio-economic burden. Recent research has focused on intrinsic factors such as mucosal linings and differences in the intestinal microbiota and identified specific endoluminal bacteria and epithelial proteins which influence intestinal wound healing and re-establ

Alterations in the histological features of the intestinal mucosa in malnourished adults of Bangladesh.

There is paucity of knowledge on the histological features of the intestinal mucosa in malnourished adults of Bangladesh. The purpose of the study was to explore the histological features of the intestinal mucosa in malnourished adults of Bangladesh and to compare the findings with their well-nourished counterparts. 64 adults (37 malnourished with body mass index, BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 and 27 controls with BMI > 18.5 kg/m2) from the Bangladesh Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (BEED) study, who underwent upper-gastrointestinal endoscopy, were selected for this study. With a view to address the asso

Changes in the expression of oxidative phosphorylation complexes in the aging intestinal mucosa.

OBJECTIVE: Mitochondria produce cellular energy via oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), mediated by respiratory chain complexes I to IV and ATP synthase (complex V). Mitochondrial respiratory complexes have been shown to decline with age in several tissues. As the intestinal epithelium is a tissue with a high energy demand, the aim of the present study was to establish whether the expression profile of OXPHOS subunits in the intestinal mucosa changes during the aging process. DESIGN: Biopsies of intestinal mucosa with no evidence of endoscopic or histomorphologic abnormalities, taken from 55

Change of the duodenal mucosa-associated microbiota is related to intestinal metaplasia.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of the duodenal mucosal microbiota of patients with intestinal metaplasia (IM) and compare it with those of the gastric mucosal microbiota. METHOD: We collected the duodenal and gastric mucosal samples from 10 adult patients with IM and 10 healthy controls (HC). The V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was examined by high throughput sequencing method. RESULTS: The diversity of the HC duodenal microbiota was higher than that of IM patient based on the Shannon and Simpson index while the Chao indices of IM duodenal

Cytokine response in the intestinal mucosa of hamsters infected with Taenia solium.

Taenia solium grows in experimentally infected hamsters. An inflammatory reaction in the intestinal mucosa surrounding the scolex of the worms is produced. We searched for mRNA of Th1 and Th2 cytokines by in situ hybridization in intestinal biopsies. Hamsters were infected with T. solium cysticerci and necropsied on different days post infection (d.p.i.). Tissue from the small intestine was taken from the area surrounding the tapeworm scolex, fixed, and processed for histology. Antisense probes for the detection of interferon (IFN)-gamma, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13 were used. Kinetics

Homing commitment of lymphocytes activated in the human gastric and intestinal mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Gastric infection with the human pathogen Helicobacter pylori results in a large accumulation of IgA and IgM secreting cells in the gastric mucosa. The molecular mechanisms resulting in B cell migration to the gastric mucosa in H pylori infection are however not known. AIMS: To examine expression of the mucosal homing receptor integrin alpha4beta7 and the homing receptor for secondary lymphoid tissues, L-selectin, on lymphocytes activated by gastric, intestinal, or systemic antigens. Furthermore, to examine gastric expression of the mucosal addressin cellular adhesion molecule 1 (

Columnar mucosa and intestinal metaplasia of the esophagus: fifty years of controversy.

OBJECTIVE: To outline current concepts regarding etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of intestinal metaplasia of the esophagus and cardia. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Previously, endoscopic visualization of columnar mucosa extending a minimum of 3 cm into the esophagus was sufficient for the diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus, but subsequently the importance of intestinal metaplasia and the premalignant nature of Barrett's have been recognized. It is now apparent that shorter lengths of intestinal metaplasia are common, and share many features of traditional 3-cm Barrett's esophagus. METHODS: Them

[Intestinal metaplasia of the gastric mucosa and its relation with gastric carcinoma].

Epidemical and morphological studies have show that there is an association between intestinal metaplasia (IM) and gastric carcinoma, and it has been considered by many to be a possible marker of premalignant change. IM is also a common finding in benign disease of the stomach, however, and recent studies have therefore been direct at identifying variants of intestinal metaplasia which may have a more specific association with gastric carcinoma. Also, it has been demonstrated that exist another factors that contribute (as the Helicobacter Pylori), which determine some events like the transform

[Enzymes and histology of the intestinal mucosa of breast-fed African infants].

Weight gain and statural growth are slow in the Kivu area (Zaïre), as compared with international reference curves. One hypothesis put forward to explain this well-documented but poorly understood fact is inadequate breast-feeding with early intake of foods responsible for the introduction of microorganisms with deleterious effects on the digestive tract. A study of intestinal mucosa specimens from 90 at least partially breast-fed infants (4 to 22 months) showed that the appearance of the jejunal mucosa was consistently abnormal, as compared with histologic standards used in Europe. Furthermor

Role of antral mucosa in intestinal phase of gastric secretion in dogs.

This study was performed to investigate the mechanisms and significance of the intestinal phase of gastric secretion. With infusion of 10% liver extract into the duodenum of dogs, serum gastrin levels of the right gastroepiploic vein increased significantly (p less than 0.01). With infusion of the pH 7.0 liver extract, acid and pepsin outputs in non- antrectomized dogs increased significantly (p less than 0.01), as did serum gastrin levels (p less than 0.01). Post-infusion acid output in these dogs was 48 +/- 16% of tetragastrin-stimulated output. With the same infusion, antrectomized dogs sho

5-HT metabolism in the intestinal wall of the rat-I. The mucosa.

Serotonin (5-HT) metabolism was studied on isolated mucosa of the rat caecum in order to determine its characteristics in enterochromaffin cells. High levels of 5-HT were found in these cells and weak catabolic processes were demonstrated. Enterochromaffin cells of the mucosa are able to synthesize ((3)H)5-HT from ((3)H)tryptophan in vitro indicating that these cells might contain tryptophan hydroxylase. In addition, a high affinity uptake of exogenous ((3)H)5-HT is demonstrated. These results show that enterochromaffin cells of the mucosa present similar biochemical properties compared to tho

Time of appearance of immunoglobulin-containing cells in the mucosa of the neonatal intestine.

In 46 intestinal specimens from infants 2 hr to 6 months old, the numbers of immunoglobulin-containing cells were counted by the direct immunofluorescent or direct immunoperoxidase technique. A restudy was made of biopsy specimens taken for diagnostic purposes, 34 from the rectum and 3 from the transverse colon of 30 infants at the Children's Hospital, Helsinki in 1971-1977, and in addition, of autopsy material recently collected from the intestines of 9 infants. Up to the age of 12 days, no immunoglobulin-containing cells were seen. A small number (1 to 2) of IgM-containing cells was seen in

Effect of folate deficiency of the intestinal mucosa on jejunal transport in the rat.

The role of folate deficiency in the pathogenesis of the abnormalities of structure and transport of the small intestine that are often present in certain disorders such as alcoholism is unclear. One reason for this is that the folate status of the intestinal mucosa has never been ascertained in humans. Previous investigations have shown that a deficient diet supplemented with sulfa does produce folate deficiency of the intestinal mucosa in weanling rats and that this is associated with diarrhea and structural abnormalities of the jejunum. In the present study, we used then in vivo marker perf
