Peutz-Jeghers syndrome complicated with intussusception: enteroscopic polyps resections through laparotomy.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by intestinal hamartomatous polyps in association with mucocutaneous pigmentations. Here we present a case of a 30-year-old woman who was hospitalized and underwent diagnostic procedures because of crampy abdominal pain. Physical examination on admission revealed pigmented spots around lips and on the oral mucosa. Multiple polyps were found in stomach, small and large intestine, with signs of initial ileo-ileal intussusception. After endoscopic removal of achievable polyps, we applied gastroscope through laparotom

Metformin combined with endoscopic therapy in patients with familial polyposis associated with carcinoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease, with a very high cancer rate. At present, endoscopic resection of polyps ≥ 1 cm is often chosen for patients with non-cancerous polyps who are unwilling to undergo surgery, and regular review is conducted. Once the polyps are pathologically confirmed to be cancerous, surgical resection of the diseased large intestine is generally recommended, but surgery often leads to a series of complications. So what do you do with cancer patients who don't want surgery? PATIENT CONCERNS: A 19-year-old woman presented

Secondary Colo-Colic Intussusception Caused by Giant Polyp of Sigmoid Colon in a 5-Year-Old Girl.

Intussusception is common in infants and young children. The most common type is small intestinal intussusception or ileo-colic intussusception. Colonic intussusception is rare. Intestinal polyps, especially large polyps or multiple polyps, can cause intussusception. Here, we report a rare case of colo-colic intussusception caused by a giant juvenile polyp of sigmoid colon, and the patient achieved good clinical effect through polypectomy under colonoscopy. So, when children have colonic intussusception, the possibility of colonic polyps should be considered.

p53 expression in precancerous gastric lesions: an immunohistochemical study of PAb 1801 monoclonal antibody on adenomatous and hyperplastic gastric polyps.

To determine the chronology of p53 mutation in the gastric carcinogenic sequence, we studied p53 overexpression in premalignant lesions, including 17 adenomatous polyps (10/17 surrounded by intestinal metaplasia and 11/17 harboring foci of adenocarcinoma or severe dysplasia), and 18 hyperplastic polyps (4/18 with focal adenomatous changes). Immunohistochemistry with PAb 1801 monoclonal antibody was performed on archival material; p53 nuclear staining was seen in 10/17 adenomas, but was limited to the foci of adenocarcinoma in three cases. Five adenomas with foci of severe dysplasia or carcinom

Gastric xanthoma with hyperplastic polyp: a case report.

Gastric xanthoma is uncommon lesion with a variably reported frequency. Hyperplastic polyps are commonest epithelial polyps in stomach. A rare case of simultaneous presence of xanthoma with hyperplastic polyp is reported. A 70-year-old female presented with dyspepsia and heartburn. Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy showed multiple sessile small whitish polyps in stomach. Histopathological examination of the polyps-showed features of xanthoma with hyperplastic polyp in the mucosa with areas of intestinal metaplasia and occasional H pylori. There was no evidence of malignancy in the present case

Gastric-type ampullary adenomas.

Intestinal-type adenomas of the ampullary duodenum are well-characterized and recognized entities, sharing similar clinicopathologic features to conventional colonic adenomas. However, gastric-type adenomas arising from the duodenal ampulla are less recognized and characterized due to limited available data. Our main aim is to investigate the clinical, histopathologic, histochemical and immunohistochemical features of gastric-type ampullary adenomas. We aim to compare gastric-type adenomas with intestinal-type adenomas and inflammatory hyperplastic reactive-type polyps of the ampullary duodenu

Specimens from biopsies of colorectal polyps often harbor additional diagnoses.

Objectives. The utility of examining specimens from colorectal biopsies of polyps for nonneoplastic diseases is currently unknown. Our objectives were to characterize such additional diagnoses that could be rendered. Methods. We retrospectively and prospectively reviewed specimens from endoscopic biopsies of colorectal polyps obtained during routine screening or surveillance. Results. 17 of 168 specimens (10.1%) contained additional diagnoses, including schistosomiasis, eosinophilic colitis, intestinal spirochetosis, melanosis coli, and other entities. These findings were easily overlooked bec

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection with colorectal polyps and malignancy in China.

BACKGROUND: Gastric Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is related to chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer, and gastric malignancies; whether this infection is related to colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer (CRC), remains debatable. AIM: To investigate the relationship between gastric H. pylori infection and the risk of colorectal polyps and CRC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 3872 patients with colorectal polyps who underwent colonoscopy and pathological diagnosis. We also analyzed 304 patients with primary CRC. The characteristics of these patients were compared with tho

Molecular profiling of visible polypoid and invisible conventional intestinal-type low-grade dysplasia in patients with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease.

AIMS: Little is known about the molecular features of visible polyps with low-grade intestinal-type dysplasia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To better understand their origins and biological potential, we sought to genomically profile these lesions and compare them with invisible low-grade dysplasia and sporadic adenomas from non-IBD patients. METHODS: 22 polyps within areas of colitis, 13 polyps outside areas of colitis, 10 foci of invisible dysplasia from patients with IBD and 6 sporadic tubular adenomas from non-IBD patients were analysed using the OncoPanel assay. Development of gastric carcinoma from intestinal metaplasia in Cdx2-transgenic mice.

In the progression of chronic gastritis, gastric mucosal cells deviate from the normal pathway of gastric differentiation to an intestinal phenotype. Many epidemiologic studies have found an association between the formation of intestinal metaplasia and the development of gastric carcinoma. However, there is no direct evidence that shows intestinal metaplasia is a precursor lesion of gastric carcinoma, to date. We periodically examined the intestinal metaplastic mucosa of Cdx2-transgenic mice we have previously generated. Gastric polyps developed from intestinal metaplastic mucosa in all stoma

A Peutz-Jeghers syndrome case with iron deficiency anemia and jejuno-jejunal invagination.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited rare syndrome characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentations, with intestinal and extraintestinal polyps. It is accepted to be a precancerous syndrome. The polyps can cause anemia and intestinal obstruction and intussuception. We present a young patient admitted to our clinic with a history of recent gastrointestinal bleeding. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations revealed multiple polyps located in the stomach, jejunum, rectum and terminal ileum. In addition, there were many mucocutaneous pigmentations on the lips, b

Giant inflammatory polyps associated with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. An ultrastructural study of five cases.

Five cases of giant inflammatory polyps associated with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease are reported. Polyps produced intestinal obstruction in three cases; consequently, surgery was performed. In a further two cases, intestinal bleeding was improved by endoscopic polypectomy. Electron microscopy showed fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, mast cells, lymphocytes, collagen fibers, capillaries, and venules. Remnants of the original mucosal epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and hypertrophic autonomous nerve plexuses were noted. Nerve fibers were interwoven with the matrix of the polyps. Mast

Hyperplastic polyps of the stomach: associations with histologic patterns of gastritis and gastric atrophy.

Hyperplastic polyps are common gastric lesions characterized by hyperplastic foveolae with variable amounts of inflamed stroma. Their pathogenesis is unknown, but they have been reported to occur in association with various forms of chronic gastritis, particularly autoimmune gastritis and Helicobacter pylori gastritis. Comprehensive histologic evaluation of the background mucosal pathology in patients with hyperplastic polyps has not been previously performed. We studied 160 patients with gastric hyperplastic polyps and characterized endoscopic and histologic features of the polyps (i.e., loca

Increased expression of chymase in inflammatory polyps in elderly patients with functional bowel disorder.

Chymase, a chymotrypsin-like protease, is a non-angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) angiotensin II (Ang II)-generating enzyme. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether chymase activity was increased in inflammatory polyps of elderly patients with functional bowel disorder (FBD). This study enrolled 45 elderly patients with FBD and 44 healthy control individuals. Expression of chymase in intestinal mucosa was assessed using fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry (IHC). IHC showed an increased number of chymase-positive mast cells in inflammat

[Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome with Adenomatous Change in a Fifteen-month-old Boy].

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a very rare genetic disorder. PJS carries a high risk of developing gastrointestinal (GI) cancer or non-GI cancer with advancing years. However, major symptoms of PJS in childhood are obstruction, intussusception, and bleeding from hamartomatous intestinal polyps which in majority of cases are not related to cancer. Generally, first GI symptom develops by 20 years in one half of children diagnosed with PJS. Children under two years of age who had PJS polyp-related intestinal symptoms are rare, and there have been no published report on intestinal carcinoma devel
